Welcome to our new travel blog. We hope to post some photos and give everyone regular updates re: our adventures studying in Scotland. We landed in Aberdeen in late afternoon local time on Friday the 15th of September 2006. We initially flew off from Montreal and after a bumpy landing in Paris that had most passengers clinging their armrests in terror. Ok, maybe not that bad, but pretty shaky indeed! Charles de Gaulle was quite nice... the best part: no fast food restaurants! We enjoyed a baguette sandwich and waited around for our flights to Aberdeen which went fine (I slept through the whole thing). Upon arrival we got into our new flat which was surprisingly bigger than anticipated. We have a small lounge from which a kitchen, a bathroom and a bedroom branch off of... ... read more

Bus, plane, bus, another bus with screeming teenagers - needless to say today was a bit of a travel day! We went from Dublin to Aberdeen to Braemar up in Scotland. The last bus ride had beautiful views of green. A giant rock on the side of the road stated that "You are now in the Highlands". What I really enjoyed was watching the way the teens interacted though. Minus the screaming it was really cool. They all spend the day in class together and then have to ride home (some for over 2hrs) together on a bus. I supposed that is what it would be like to live in a small city/village. You could really feel their sense of community. The best part was when one of the boys collected money from everyone. At the ... read more

We had an early start today. We were intending on visiting quite a number of castles and historic sites. Our route was to take in much of the North East Coast and interior of Scotland, but didn’t start well. We visited Castle Fraser first, but it didn’t open up until 1100. We had a bit of a look at what we could do, and knowing we needed to be finished by 1530 today, we ended up deciding to go into the centre of Aberdeen and look around the city instead. To be brutally honest, the city didn’t do much for either of us and we ended up going back to the hotel at about 1400 to start packing for tomorrow. Once we finished packing, we headed out to visit Elaine, Mike and Uncle Bill. They were ... read more

Today was another early start. We were going to do some castle touring on the way back to Edinburgh and then see how things went on the way back. Our first stop was at Dunnottar Castle. This was impressive. At the start, it looks like it is sitting on a tall island, but when you get closer, you can see the small strip of land leading to it. Our next stop was the town of Arbroath and to have a look at its Abbey. Once again, this was huge. It was in a bad state of ruin, but you could see how big it was and the photos will show how impressive it was. I can’t exactly remember the exact history of it, but it is one of Scotlands most historic Abbeys. Some sort of agreement ... read more

An early start today. We were heading up to Aberdeen and I had to go pick up the hire car from the airport. We had breakfast downstairs, which was very nice. A full buffet with both continental and hot breakfast available. Then off to get the car. We were given a Blue Peugeot which was quite sufficient for us. It wasn’t long before we said goodbye to the hotel, and the smoky air inside it. Our first stop for the day was at St Andrews, where we had another look at both the cathedral and the castle. Both very impressive. After that, we headed over to the 18th fairway of the old course to take some photos. Then, back on the road. We pretty much just headed to Aberdeen from there, keen on finding the hotel. ... read more

Hey Everyone! We just arrived at Aberdeen and checked in at out new hostel (it's really nice here and they have a cheap laundry-mat which is really good because it was getting to the point that I couldn't sit next to Alex on the train!) By the way 'internet stalker' I'm pretty sure Alex has out-stunk any stinking you did in Europe. The train ride here was 2 and a half hours of h-e-double-hockey-sticks. The air conditioning wasn't working so it was like 100 million degrees in there (hence the comment about not being able to sit next to Alex). We're pretty excited about being in a new city but we are going to miss the bells of St. Giles in the morning. So far Aberdeen seems a lot less touristy then the other places have ... read more

Our stops for Sunday included the places we missed previously with the first one being Pitmedden Gardens. The gardens were very nice, especially the walled one but most flowers were still not yet in bloom. There was also a museum of Farming Life. The gardens enclose an area of 5 miles. After here we went to Castle Fraser for the guided tour. Rooms included a doll house collection, a wooden leg, a hidden trap door that revealed stairs and a spyhole that looked into the Great Hall. That was my favorite. We climbed the round tower and had views of the gardens that were still closed. We got into Aberdeen late afternoon and I gave the guy I met in Banff a ring and left a message. We had went down for dinner in the hotel ... read more
