Hello everyone! Well, it's been some time now since we have written in here, so I thought after this weekend we might have a bit more to say. Well things are finally "up and running". I (Leigh) have fully registered for my classes and have started them, and the wonderful overload of readings. Justin is in the middle of his induction and begins his classes soon as well. Justin has also pretty well finalized his plans for his MRes thesis...so if you are wondering his choice of topic and experiment plans you can ask him about that. I won't attempt to explain it here....because I probably don't know all of the plans and ideas, but it seems quite interesting and beneficial research! We are fitting in quite well here, making some friends, colleagues and feeling more ... read more

Its creeping up now.... slowly but very surely. 4 days till i leave Aberdeen, 9 till i fly. Have unravelled many rainbow ribbons of emotions this past month. Have finished working, and said most of my goodbyes. This last week entails spending time treasuring my friends and family, drinking up the last few hours together, aware that i wont be able to cuddle, kiss, laugh and embrace the people that are the soild foundations to my world. It feels important, in those last few seconds of seeing somone, to say something that comes from the heart, and to lock these special words lin my memories for the next year. Saying goodbye to so many people has made me realise how lucky i am to have so many beautiful angels to bless my life. The only place ... read more

While the historic architecture is certainly worth describing, Leigh and I yearned to see the sea, and with the beach and the North Sea only a 15 minute walk from campus, we set out bright and early to find it. Using a clandestine map fashioned for us by my thesis supervisor, we set out along one of the many cobble-stoned streets. A minutes in, we found ourselves in Seaton park, a beautifully manicured park filled with grandiose trees, flower arrangements that would be any gardener’s envy, and great open spaces. For a town renowned for being grey, the burst of color was a welcomed surprise. After getting rather lost (as we always manage to do) we found ourselves walking on a golf course straining our ears to hear for any shouts of “fore!” We finally oriented ... read more

Hey guys! I'm not sure what you know about Aberdeen, but here are some facts for your amusement! Aberdeen - The "Granite City" (Scotland's third largest city)- is one of the most distinctive cities in the UK being built predominantly from granite, which sparkles in the sunshine and even after rain. Aberdeen-City and Shire - is also known as The Energy Capital of Europe. Thanks to the North Sea oil and gas industry and the many cultures and nationalities which have made their home here, Scotland's third largest city is a cosmopolitan, well connected and thriving regional centre. You'll find the best of everythings in this city, from the latest designer fashions to traditional Scottish crafts. Indulge in good food, great entertainment, a vibrant bar and club scene and festivals and events to suit all tastes. ... read more

In the midst of getting settled we’ve taken it upon ourselves to be your eyes and ears in the north of Scotland. Our first minor culture shock: the prominence of graveyards. While Ottawa certainly has its fair share, Aberdeen as a city of just over 200,000 people is chock full of them. And we’re not talking about small cemeteries in the outskirts of town, or camouflaged by creative forestry. In Aberdeen, not only are cemeteries in the centre of town, but they contain benches and paths. In some instances, they’re used as quiet places for people to walk around, reflect and read - in the same way you’d expect a park to be used in Ottawa. At first glance, I found it slightly disconcerting to see a cemetary right on the main street, but I quickly ... read more

Welcome to our new travel blog. We hope to post some photos and give everyone regular updates re: our adventures studying in Scotland. We landed in Aberdeen in late afternoon local time on Friday the 15th of September 2006. We initially flew off from Montreal and after a bumpy landing in Paris that had most passengers clinging their armrests in terror. Ok, maybe not that bad, but pretty shaky indeed! Charles de Gaulle was quite nice... the best part: no fast food restaurants! We enjoyed a baguette sandwich and waited around for our flights to Aberdeen which went fine (I slept through the whole thing). Upon arrival we got into our new flat which was surprisingly bigger than anticipated. We have a small lounge from which a kitchen, a bathroom and a bedroom branch off of... ... read more

Bus, plane, bus, another bus with screeming teenagers - needless to say today was a bit of a travel day! We went from Dublin to Aberdeen to Braemar up in Scotland. The last bus ride had beautiful views of green. A giant rock on the side of the road stated that "You are now in the Highlands". What I really enjoyed was watching the way the teens interacted though. Minus the screaming it was really cool. They all spend the day in class together and then have to ride home (some for over 2hrs) together on a bus. I supposed that is what it would be like to live in a small city/village. You could really feel their sense of community. The best part was when one of the boys collected money from everyone. At the ... read more

We had an early start today. We were intending on visiting quite a number of castles and historic sites. Our route was to take in much of the North East Coast and interior of Scotland, but didn’t start well. We visited Castle Fraser first, but it didn’t open up until 1100. We had a bit of a look at what we could do, and knowing we needed to be finished by 1530 today, we ended up deciding to go into the centre of Aberdeen and look around the city instead. To be brutally honest, the city didn’t do much for either of us and we ended up going back to the hotel at about 1400 to start packing for tomorrow. Once we finished packing, we headed out to visit Elaine, Mike and Uncle Bill. They were ... read more

Today was another early start. We were going to do some castle touring on the way back to Edinburgh and then see how things went on the way back. Our first stop was at Dunnottar Castle. This was impressive. At the start, it looks like it is sitting on a tall island, but when you get closer, you can see the small strip of land leading to it. Our next stop was the town of Arbroath and to have a look at its Abbey. Once again, this was huge. It was in a bad state of ruin, but you could see how big it was and the photos will show how impressive it was. I can’t exactly remember the exact history of it, but it is one of Scotlands most historic Abbeys. Some sort of agreement ... read more
