Our first taste of Haggis on Robbie Burns day! Address to a Haggis. Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain o the puddin'-race! Aboon them a' ye tak your place, Painch, tripe, or thairm: Weel are ye wordy of a grace As lang's my arm. The groaning trencher there ye fill, Your hurdies like a distant hill, Your pin wad help to mend a mill In time o need, While thro your pores the dews distil Like amber bead. His knife see rustic Labour dight, An cut you up wi ready slight, Trenching your gushing entrails bright, Like onie ditch; And then, O what a glorious sight, Warm-reekin, rich! Then, horn for horn, they stretch an strive: Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive, Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve Are bent like drums; The ... read more

Food! Glorious Food Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Aberdeen By KellybellyJanuary 29th 2007Kelly HowardAll year, cooking has been a great community event. All of us international students get together at least weekly and prepare meals together. It is also very fun to try to make a variety of dishes with only a few pots, and one pan. Cooking here has definitely allowed me to be very creative in my methods of cooking, whether it be using a frying pan to make an apple pie, or trying to switch different parts of a dish so they can both cook in the same pot. Well, that's what yo... read more

As part of the festivities for Christmas 2006, the health psychology group organised their annual party. The day began at the local bowling alley, where Justin showed off his mad skills on the lanes. By mad skills, he means that he mostly came in last, but at least he looked good doing it. The fun then moved to the Health Psych lab at Kings, where one and all gathered for drinks and a great Thai meal. Once dinner had ended, Justin charged himself with the after dinner entertainment. Everyone was shown various baby photos of members of the lab, and were asked to guess who each baby was. At stake: a chocolate golden reindeer which was previously won (two years in a row) by Gerry. Thankfully, the crown passed to Rachael who won with a convincing ... read more

Well we have been here almost 3 months now, settling in nicely and getting back into the swing of things with school! We have also been a bit busy which is why we haven't much time to report back to the blog. But I head to Edinburgh for a day next week, so I will try to take some pictures there! But anyway, we sometimes think back to Canada, friends, family, memories...that sort of thing. And so it was really great to have a familiar face from home here in Aberdeen, even if it was only for a few days! Elissa a friend from Uni in Ottawa (for those of you not from Ottawa) passed through Aberdeen to visit on her whirlwind tour of Scotland this week and it was quite a lot of fun. It ... read more

Saturday November 18, 2006- Today was a busy day. Steve and I woke up again when Jason and Tracy came in to feed Sophie, but this time it was a weekend so everyone was still in their jammies. We spent some time talking about what we had done yesterday and then we had to get ready to leave. We were driving back to Elgin through Aberdeen to see a football game. Or for you Americans out there, a soccer game. (Our football is called American football everywhere else in the world). We had another couple of hours of nice driving, with more weird weather, more green hills, and more sheep. I love this country. When we got to Aberdeen we went straight to Steve's sister Paula's house. She was out, but her daughter was in. We ... read more

“Don’t fall off the cliff… it’s my day off today and I drink on my day off!” exclaimed the coast guard. This chance meeting with one of Scotland’s finest began our first venture outside of Aberdeen. The destination: Dunnottar Castle. The journey was not to be taken lightly… and certainly after the warning from our friend the coast guard had us wondering what we were getting ourselves into. But I am getting ahead of myself. The town of Stonehaven is a 15 minute train ride out of Aberdeen. A small fishing community with a quaint harbour, it is the gateway to the ruins of Dunnottar Castle. This castle, like many others I’m sure, has a storied past including a siege, and it was once home to the Scottish crown jewels. So certainly, its proximity to Aberdeen ... read more

Hey everyone! Some of you are aware that a couple weeks ago Justin and I went to a traditional Scottish Ceilidh. For those of who may not know what this is (I didn't until I looked it up online prior to attending--Thanks Wikipedia!), here is a little bit of info and then a follow up of some pictures of us and our friends from the night! Céilidh music is provided by any assortment of fiddle, flute, tin whistle, accordion, bodhrán (pronounced /ˈboːrɑːn/ or /ˈbaurɑːn/) (a drumlike instrument, traditionally with a wooden frame covered with stretched goat hide), and in more recent times also drums and electric bass guitar. The music is cheerful and lively, and the basic steps can be learned easily; a short instructional session is often provided for new dancers before the start of ... read more
