To call today eventful would be a bit of an understatement. For starters, we had a decent breakfast in the castle, then we were forced to leave the high style to which we had grown accustomed and depart for the highlands. However, before this part of our adventure began we all assembled at the bus, early mind you, for the “surprise stop” that was not on our itinerary. I thought this was going to be something incredibly lame, but I was rather wrong. It turns out that by “surprise” our tour manager meant going to The Old Course at St. Andrew’s and checking out the home of golf for about an hour. I was far more than impressed by this, some might say “delighted,” I would say, “Giddy as a school girl.” It was amazing! Absolutely ... read more

Well it has been awhile since we have updated this site. There are a number of reasons for that, one is that we haven't really done anything too exciting to tell about for sometime now since we have both been quite busy. Justin has been busy applying for his PhD here in Aberdeen. You will all be happy to know we was able to get his funding and we will be stationed in Aberdeen for another 3 yrs. This is both exciting and a wee bit frightening at the same time. I have been busy with essays and exams, and was quite ill for about a month. But now I am feeling better and ready to dig my heels into my dissertation. Other than that we are trying to to find ourselves a new flat ... read more

Ah Aberdeen, the granite city. I spent a good three days wandering around this pretty city, admiring the old granite buildings and nice parks. Tons of cool looking churches were everywhere, and a lot of the stores I passed had interesting names like “The Snuggery”, or “The Cheeky Monkey”. I pretty much saw everything a tourist could see in this city with exception to most of old Aberdeen and the university district. Seeing places like Castlegate and the Mercat Cross make me realize how young Canada is. Taking a stroll throughout downtown on streets like Union make me wish I lived closer to a city as well. Everything is made of granite it seems, and I was lucky to have two good days of bright sunshine to make everything gleam. One day of rain turned ... read more

No Pictures for this day, too sad to note in photos Today was Kris and Sarah’s last day in Scotland…so sad, it went too quick. We got up and had some breakfast, then headed into town for some shopping. We needed some last minute souvenirs to bring home. We found another Thorntons Chocolate shop, and chocolate shots had to be done again. After shopping, things needed to be re-packed and re-organized, then we had to say good-bye. A taxi picked up Kris and Sarah and took them to the Aberdeen airport for a one hour flight to London, a 14 hour night sleeping in Heathrow, and an 11 hour flight back to LAX. Ridiculous! Guess it’s time to start planning the next great adventure! ... read more

It was a beautiful Easter morning, blue skies and everything. We got ready and headed out to find an Easter service to attend. St. Machar’s Cathedral is where we ended up for a traditional Catholic Mass. The cathedral was gorgeous - aside from being surrounded by very old, kind of creepy tombstones. There was a large organ and a beautiful choir. Holy Communion was passed around in one cup and we were near the back…. trying not to think about germs =) It was too beautiful to go indoors, so we grabbed some picnic food (of course ham and chocolate for Easter) and walked down to the beach. It wasn’t the kind of beach you would strip down and take a swim, but we had a good picnic and found some rocks and shells and ... read more

Hey guys!! Just finished my little couple of days in Aberdeen, was good to get out of Edinburgh and feel like a bit of a tourist again. Spent a couple of nights with Brenden and Maree, Geoffs mate from school in Gladstone so was a good connection to have!! Got here monday night on Megabus, (4hrs but only £8, really cheap) and was going through snow!! Will post the pictures up soon but on Tuesday there were periods of thick snow and periods of beautiful sunshine. We went inland for a bit and climbed a bit of a track to the top, got stuck up there with about a miniute blizzard and very windy, then made it back down the mountain trying to avoid the holes you couldn't see because of the whole, but everyone ... read more

I love not being able to use my arms for days after rock climbing; it's amazing! The night before the competition, I was called by my friend Norah (Austria) about the Lairig Mountaineering club. She said they were desperate on having some girls for the competition, they needed three at least to compete, but only had one (her). So, though I had never participated in the club, I went with to the RGU sport centre and got to rock climb for three straight hours, trying to complete as many routes as I could for points. It was amazing and tiring, but best of all, completely free! and I got an awesome shirt! How cool is that? ... read more

Aberdeen v. Edinburgh : The Futball Match! Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Aberdeen By KellybellyMarch 10th 2007Kelly Howard Aberdeen Won! Yeah team! Regardless of the ridiculously one-sided refs, Aberdeen beat Edinburgh on the home field; always an enjoyable event to see. I really wanted to go to a match while in the UK, but didn't really want to pay the big money to see a national team play. This match was perfect because it's a 30 min. walk from the Uni, cheap, and very obnoxious fans! I think I loved the singing and chants the best. So many insults, I could... read more

Okay, so. Friday night I was locked in a bathroom by my flatemate and had my fingers nearly smashed off when I was foiling his brutish plot with brute strength - I was going to break the broom he had locking me in so he pulled the door shut on my fingers. I am also now carving a sword out of a stick. Perhaps as a vehicle of vengance, but only time will tell. Saturday I joined a group called the "dirty weekenders", and yes, aberdeen has a club for that sort of stuff. while I was expecting a weekend full of hedonism and baccus-style celebration, I got volunteer work at a warehouse (not whore house) where they give away furniture and clothes to people who need them. And mugs and kilts to me, if I ... read more
