Chat Ham /Chath Am - we pondered on the pronounciation of the town on the Medway. Of course it is Chat Ham we said . But being Welsh the th could be pronounced slightly differently . Did a Man of Kent say it one way and a Kentish man the other ? That was the chat over a large meal in the restaurant attached to the Premier Inn. A meal of fish and chips and a steak and ale pie for me. Sadly no brocolli and I was looking forward to that . A pudding rounded it off . A large glass , scoop of ice cream , Cadburys buttons , lots of cream and a dousing of chocolate sauce . We slept well . For a Premier Inn it was quiet , the bed hard ... read more

So when is a city not a city? An old definition of a city was a place with a cathedral . The more modern definition is a place with a sizeable population . Not historical but more around the way our country is growing in population . What were once towns can now be designated a city if the monarch allows it . Our own town Wrexham was moved to city status last year . The largest town in North Wales it more than deserved the honour but it was not well liked by many in the town . Many harked back to the market status of the town . The markets had gone years ago . They harked on about the Wrexham of the past with the shops full . Again long gone. The cry ... read more

200 steps and not a mention of health and safety . 200 steps in total darkness. 200 steps rising from the depths of the donjon to the open roof . I think I prefer the French word rather than our word - a keep. 200 very narrow steps cantilevered and well worn . A small rope for a handrail . We were still annoyed with the volunteer in the cathedral who complained to Glenn about standing on two steps and just glared at me for the climbing the lot for a view in the Quire . No I had not seen the sign . Perhaps it was there to stop the likes of you and me - those who had not paid for a guided tour from seeing the quire . It rankled . It annoyed ... read more

The alarm pinged off at just before 6. We were off to Kent for a few days. A much needed break away from the usual day to day routine . In the darkness I tore off the calendar thought for the day. I had been stuck with a run of repeats thoughts from previous years but today gave me a much needed boost . " Today is your own" " Tomorrow perchance may never come" A bit morbid for a thought but extremely true . We have kept putting off trips since selling Gabby but today was one the first we forced ourselves to organise . Organising had not been easy . We had to choose days that fitted in between football matches . Places to visit had to be open. Car parking had to be ... read more

So and thе еvеnin' bеforе I dеpart and I am sittin' hеrе. I quickly rеalizеd that I didn't havе еnough undеrpants an' quickly tossеd somе on top of my backpack. Thе problеm liеs in transfеrrin' thе backpack from thе floor to my back; it is complеtеly doablе whеn it is on my back. I supposе I could probably squat down an' gеt it on and but if I fеll flat on my facе whilе only tryin' to pick up my pursе and I think my lеgs would havе major problеms. I would also probably losе somе dignity.... On thе bright sidе and I can officially consign my Blackbеrry to thе box of shamе (situatеd on my dеsk insidе a box along with my papеrwork an' a pair of 3D glassеs) an' givе it a full six ... read more

Visit to Higham, the Old Post Office We received an email from Steve at mid January and asked us if we both could take one of the weekends off in February to celebrate my mother-in-law’s birthday. I realised that 12th to 16th will be the half term and it would be best for me to take the weekend off between 16th to 18th and young students would spend the time with their family and friends on 17th February. I arranged for a couple of adult volunteers to cover for me on 17th and ensure that the shop would run on 17th and 18th without me. Both Mark and I worked on Friday morning, 16th February and went to Liverpool Street to catch the train around 4 o’clock. The train took us to Manningtree station around 17.12. ... read more

Air India to Air Concerns - Piprey Feb 2024 The pleasure is in the journey but those travellers were probably not born in the current age and experienced Air India. Here is to the pleasure of Incredible Indias' premier airlines, Air India which fulfills the promise of transporting passengers across the globe but with quite some interesting derogations. Flight from London Heathrow to Kolkata for Durga pooja Like a swarm of bees, the world descends to Kolkata for Durga pooja, the biggest cultural festival for the Bengali community. Among the thousands, I had carefully booked an Air India flight from London Heathrow to Kolkata via Delhi. Despite being a key metro, Air India does not have any direct flights from London to Kolkata. Outbound flight delay I arrived at London Heathrow airport, well in time only ... read more

"If you miss the present moment you miss your appointment with life " Thich Nhat Hanh . That was the thought for this morning . The sun was shining . It was a lovely Spring Day . Very unlike a February day . Global warming was causing a mini heatwave in some parts of the world . Our little part of the world was having temperatures up in the 18's . Unheard of this time of year . The spring flowers are being fooled by the warmer weather . It was though a good day to be out and about . The sort of day you think let's go out and do something . The biggest problem as always was where to go. The plan - a trip out in the car with no name to ... read more

When you live in the same place for a while it is hard sometimes to think of places to visit . You find you have done them all. Sometimes more than once . The choice of places to look at diminishes over time or the distance between each becomes too great for a day trip out. There is something to be said for moving home on a regular basis . Perusing the local maps doesn't always give you new ideas. Trawling through the internet draws blanks . Sometimes I find somewhere we have not been to but it is either too far to drive to or the weather puts us off . February is an inclement month . We can expect frosty nights or exceptionally mild ones . We may get high winds or torrential rain. ... read more

Saturday 20th January One of the advantages of taking a Saga cruise is that you have a courtesy car pick you up from home and take you to the Port. The journey to Portsmouth on a Saturday was without hitch, the driver had an eta arrival slot at the Naval Port so we had a 45 minute comfort stop en route. The cruise terminal at Portsmouth was new to us since our last cruise this time last year, as soon as the car pulled up our baggage was taken straight to the ship, check in was very efficient and as David had the wheelchair everyone was so helpful. As we arrived on board staff were lined up to greet us and escort us to our cabin, we had an adapted cabin to accommodate the wheelchair. Everything ... read more
