Wessex Stone Circles 1 - 0 Silesian Coal Mines
Published: November 30th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Wiltshire » AveburySo, I was planning to spend this weekend in Katowice as I booked a £2 RyanAir return a few months back, coinciding with what I thought might be another show in Prague, but this turned out not to happen. However some important uni commitments came up and tbh, I can't really afford to spend 4 days in a city where I know no one and didn't fancy sleeping rough in the forest in the bleak Silesian midwinter. Instead I took one day off uni and with this rather wonderful character Jitka (who hadn't left London in months - something which I believe to be seriously dangerous to one's health), headed down to Avebury, a place my friend Gabriela recommended to me due to its high energy, ancient stone circles and rather spectacular "natural" features. It was ... read more
Avebury and Stonehenge
Published: June 30th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Wiltshire » AveburyAdrian, Sharmini's nephew, joined us for the day, away from his work in London. Visited Avebury, which has a large stone circle around the village. The stones are not as big as those at Stonehenge, but impressive because of the size of the stone circle. Then visited Stonehenge, as you can tell from the pictures. Surprisingly it was not as touristed as we expected. It was busy for a weekend afternoon, but not as bad as we'd expected. It was a hot day and we were quite exhausted from the heat. Came home to a wonderful dinner that Sharmini had cooked. ... read more
Went to see anopther little village close by with Greg and his parents. Avebury is known for it's stone circles that have been around since prehistoric times (4500 to 5000 years old...). This country has so much history that it's hard to retain everything! The Stone Circle is similar to Stonehenge as in no one knows how it came about and what it was for........ read more
Ancient Stone Circles & Other Monuments
Published: January 7th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Wiltshire » AveburyWith an early start we headed for Avebury to see the 335 metre diameter ancient stone circle, flanked by older massive ditches and embankments (dating possibly from 3400 BC). The town itself was especially pretty with thatched-roofed Elizabethan style buildings, atmospheric old stone church and church yard which was sited at one end of standing stone starcens. Not far away was 40-metre high Silbury Hill built from chalk (dating from 2750BC) and the West Kennett Long Barrow, a tomb complex (dating from about 3600 BC and apparently in use until about 2500 BC). Further South was the famous Stonehenge, where surrounding earth and ditch works date to 3100 BC and the bluestone monument dating from perhaps 2500 BC. All these were most impressive in both their longevity and mystery. We arrived at Stonehenge only an hour ... read more
England 'rocks' - Road Trip #3
Published: December 17th 2006Europe » United Kingdom » England » Wiltshire » AveburyYep another day trip out of London. This time to see an area of … well… rocks really. Okay, it sounds like I’m being a little sarcastic but we had a great day. Avebury is actually a really beautiful and interesting place to visit. Basically it is an amazing part of the English countryside that is a World Heritage Site. There are huge rocks there that were put into huge circular formations in about 2600BC. No one is exactly sure why. As far as prehistoric stone circles go, these are some of the biggest in Europe and they were great to explore and photograph. A neat little village too, with a museum and lots of history. A great place to get out for a country walk on a crisp winters day. ... read more
