Driving home for Christmas. It would be different in 2020. The shadow of COVID would mean for many the journey would not happen - and for others, it would be a very brief visit. London and the South East had been placed in Tier 4 just before the big day. Travel from the area was effectively banned, although nobody had bothered to enforce the message as a deluge of people desperately descended on St Pancras Railway Station in a bid to depart north before the last trains of the evening left. A scene reminiscent of a World War 2 evacuation before the Blitz unfolded. A few days previously, the South had been almost sniggering at the North as they enjoyed an almost normal pub life. Drinking in the then Tier 2 could continue, as long as ... read more

A week after the nostalgia trip to the FA Cup Final, it was the turn of the nostalgia music trip. The youth of today see the world of live musical experience as something to savour in either a mega arena or in a muddy field, where Wellington fashions can be compared. The mystique of both has always been lost on me, largely due to the size of an event where the optimum views are often of a giant screen. Meanwhile, a band plays 200 metres away. We grew up with the more intimate atmosphere of small clubs, where bands learned their trade the hard way and roamed the country in a Transit van. The trips to the now flattened Coatham Bowl were relished. The student days in Cottonopolis in the early 1980s gave me the opportunity ... read more

What shall we do today? You know how the conversation goes. It's a lovely day, the sun is shining so where shall we spend the day? You choose. No you pick a place. Ok let me go swimming and when I come home we will make a decision. So back home and have a make a cup of coffee and decide. Coffee made. Biscuits picked . We sit down and slowly enjoy it so .................what do we do today? With a sense of de ja vu we carry on. Where would you like to go? No come on you pick. I can't think . You make a decision . How about Lichfield? Never been before . There is a fantastic cathedral there to see but then there is Nostell Priory up the M1 just outside Wakefield. ... read more

Today was a relaxing day at home for us. We spent the day playing and swimming in the pool, then relaxed around the house before seeing the family off to London. We went back to the local playground in the afternoon for another go on the huge swings. A lovely Saturday afternoon meant that it was quite busy at the park but it must have been the perfect day to mow the lawn as well because a large tractor towing an enormous rotary mowing unit drove onto the field and began to mow the lawn. Then, despite small kids running around all over the place, he thought it might be ok to drive his mowers right in and around the play equipment too! That spelt the end of the day for everyone in the park as ... read more

The main reason for the visit to England was to catch up with family so over the next few days we are staying with Mel’s relatives. We had arranged to arrive about lunchtime so we left early for Mel's uncle and aunt in Wooley. Set just outside the small village, their house is part of a complex that used to be a farm and included a large barn, mill with waterwheel and cottages for workers. All the buildings have been converted to homes now and their house was the carpenter’s workshop (greatly extended) next door to the old mill with the garage being made out of the old Dovecote. After lunch, we went for a walk towards the village taking some carrots and apples to feed the horses on the way. Em was too scared of ... read more

Well we have now been home a fortnight and we are still settling back into normality. We enjoyed a week getting used to being at home with no plan or sightseeing to do! It was great meeting up with family and friends that we have not seen for 6 months other than on webcam (Skype is fantastic). It has felt really strange trying to get back into our old routine, everything feels so familiar and normal but different. It has been lovely sleeping in our own bed and being in our home, staying in one place for more than 4 nights. However we did go to the Lake District for the weekend, we enjoyed a family barbeque and a walk up Orrest Head on Sunday, where we had a fantastic view of Lake Windermere with my ... read more

Day 1 - D-Day, The start of our big adventure Well this is our first blog! Currently sat on the train from Wakefield to Heathrow after a tiring day of packing and getting ready for departure. We are staying at Heathrow tonight as we have an early flight to Madrid in the morning. Our flight is at 7.30am and arrives in Madrid a couple of hours later, before getting a 12 hour flight to Lima (Peru). We have had a very busy couple of weeks. It has been stressful sorting out what to do about visas for Russia and China etc and getting the house organised. The last week has been quite a roller-coaster of emotions. We have had to say a lot of goodbyes and leave our jobs which has been a bit scary! We ... read more

Well, 1 week to go now (little bit less if you want to be technical!) Starting to pass the excitement stage - gone straight to nervous town! Been planning the trip for so long that it didn't feel real, until I finished work, started to pack and had a leaving party to say bye to everyone...very strange! That's not to say I'm not excited...I am...just nervous too. And I know how lucky I am because everyone keeps reminding me ;) Anyway, this is about the leaving party, which was really nice! Big thanks to all the people who came, it was really nice to see you all. Good food, cheap drinks and great friends and family...all the components of an fab party! Here are the pictures to prove it:... read more

23rd SEPTEMBER 2008....ONE WEEK TO GO!! I had one week to go and was starting to make all my final preparations and sort all my things out. Nat and I had our leaving party on Sunday which was really nice. A lot of family and friends came and I managed to spend a bit of time with most people and say my goodbyes. It still did not seem like I was going even though I was saying goodbye. I was sure it would only hit me once I boarded the plane. The photos I have added are from the leaving party.....see if you can spot the common denominator (me)!!! I had been really laid back so far but needed to get my ass in gear and get myself organised!! I had a busy week ahead....visiting people ... read more
