On the 16th of July (just over a week ago) I visited Birdworld and Underwaterworld near Farnham, Surrey and I quite liked the little collection overall. There were a few rarities in the collection such as White Woodpeckers, Crested Guans Pink Pigeons and few nice Turacos (Black-billed etc.), Splendid Glossy Starlings, Duyvenbode's Lories, Great Bustards, three Rainbow Lorikeet subspecies and more as well as a few more common species (of course it was nothing compared to Walsrode which I had visited not long before). The place was nice looking in general and had some very nice areas such as an area of woodland fenced off with free-roaming pheasants and a nice area with a pond and various aviaries as well as the rather nice temperate house which makes a nice impression when you first enter. Ten years is a very long time. That's how long I lived in Britain, even though, originally, I went there for six months; this proves that life is best taken as it comes and that even though plans need to be made, they also need to be flexible. During those years, I fell in and out of love with Britain many times but at the end of my time there my love for her was stronger and I can say now that moving to Surrey was the best decision I could take. As you know, I love lists and summary blogs, so our leaving Britain was the perfect chance to do both in one and this is the result: the up's and down's of my ten years in England, in no particular order: UP'S 1. Meeting ... read more

I decided that before I jet set round the world, I ought to start a travel journal. This way people close to me will be able to see what I am doing and not worry so much (Mum). I haven't quite worked out how to use my travel blog quite yet but practice makes perfect and I'm sure it wont be long till I can write a blog entry and upload photos in minutes! The countdown has begun, only (and exactly) 23 days till my plane takes off from Heathrow. It is ten past ten in the evening here and that is the time my flight takes me off to Bangkok! Hopefully by then the flooding would have eased off as I wasn't planning on taking wellies with me.... Getting nervous now, have no idea how ... read more

Well not lost exactly, some losses some plusses some just plain curious. Friday night and the weekend starts here. Albert Lee plucking at the Half Moon in Putney! Fantastic, I feel as if I will be deaf for a month at the end of the night but he is just magic on a guitar, descriptions seem mild in comparison to the effortless way that he coaxes sounds form the instrument. The band with him "Hogans Heros" feature piano redal steel and drums and they kick arse. After one raging piece That has the crowd bouncing I ask if they could please play some rock n roll. The crowd is not young so we finish by eleven. Simon manages to come along and adds some good company to the good music. Saturday starterd predictably enough, the usual ... read more

It's 10pm on Saturday night. More or less exactly 48 hours to go until we leave the UK on the first leg of our ten-month trip. Anticipation is gradually turning into mild nerves ! What is to constitute the entirety of our possessions for the next 10 months is laid out on the floor and looks remarkably scant ! ... read more

This was the best and most exciting part of our trip, one which Holly, Stacy and I will never forget. Holly's father was Raymond E. Talman of Willits, California, USA. Her grandfather was Sidney P.S. Talman of Aldershot, Surrey and her great grandfather was James Talman of Ipswich, Suffolk and he lived in Aldershot with his wife, Holly's great grandmother Florence Talman (formerly Stonehouse). Thanks to Elgar and Julia Hay for your kindness and warm hospitality, and getting Girlie and all the other relatives together for our visit. Thanks again Elgar & Julia for everything. We can't thank you enough.... read more
