There is an increasing amount of research concerning edible insects. The following ted video is a great introduction to the advantages of entomophagy (the consumption of insects as food). In fact, it's what got us hooked on in teh first place! http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/marcel_dicke_why_not_eat_insects.html... read more

So, in order to avoid annoying posts filling up my freinds facebook/twitter feeds, I have decided to compile an online journal of my adventures this summer at camp in America! In a little over 3 days I will be boarding the place from Heathrow to JFK in New York to begin an amazing summer at Camp Emerson in Hilsden, MA. My room is still very much NOT packed and things are starting to get a little crazy! I took ownership of a new swish suitcase this morning which even has wheels on the bottom! Check back soon for more updates on my journey! SG... read more

Annie Van Proyen here....This morning we left Dublin by ferry. Though I was excited about leaving the city for a new place, I will certainly miss the friendly, smiling Irish people. I’m sure we will find people equally as wonderful in England, but the Irish hospitality was certainly distinct to their culture. We hopped on a ferry early this morning and departed for Holyhead. We were pleasantly by the accommodations on the ferry. After visiting the outdoor deck and doing our best not to be blown away, many of us enjoyed the comfortable chairs and took a nap. The view of Wales when the boat pulled up to the dock was phenomenal. The beautiful seaside city was surrounded by tall, rocky hills. We then got on a coach headed towards Bath, and we stopped at the ... read more

Traversing the market square we passed through the Penniless Porch at the North East corner where true to its name sat two vagrants. One, bearded, attempted a Bob Dylan tune to sing for his supper or more likely to supply something to his ladyfriend sat beside him in a stupor. Her haggard face and distant gaze recalled better days. A long tatty dress covering multi-coloured stockings and leather boots seemed to freeze her in time. Two strays from nearby Glastonbury frozen in the 80s, waiting for the next festival to begin. The immense West front rose up before us, its horizontal central section adorned with stone statues reputedly the finest examples of medieval sculpture in the world. It's lucky that Cromwell's soldiers couldn't reach high enough to destroy these. The statues in the lower section within ... read more

We started off our France trip with a day trip to Bath. Yes, it seems a bit out of the way to go to Bath first, but we like to be complicated and pack everything in. The reason for Bath is that we were planning to take the overnight ferry from Portsmouth, England to St. Malo, France, and we didn't want to waste a day of our vacation, so we stopped in at Bath for a few hours by bus, and then we took the train from Bath to Portsmouth to catch the ferry. Bath was a beautiful town. Unfortunately we had less time than we thought we had to explore, especially since we had to drop our heavy backpacks off at a hostel to store for the day so we didn't have to lug them ... read more

So, my big trip is almost here. I have been saying my goodbyes in London and Southampton, the last one being with a dear friend over lunch yesterday. She gave me a zippo with 'loving your work' engraved upon it. Was such a sweet thing to do and I must admit a small tear in my eye. I shall miss her. last do tonight in the Plough, Taunton. Pie and mash and the quiz night with some new friends and of course my lovely Molly. A true romantic me. So,....... I am flying with Iberia. A reliable airline I was informed. Bearing in mind that my motto for my walkabouts or holiday is; 'If it's going to happen it then will happen to me', the Iberian airline pilots have decided to strike on the day I ... read more

'I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.' This is the opening line of my favorite poem by John Masefield. I remember once writing it in a book of rememberance for my cousin Steve, who was taken from us far too early, hoping that it would help those who read it, and for Steve himself in his journey though to whatever lies beyond the next door. So here I am. One chapter of my life has closed and I finally retired yesterday after 30 years of locking up villains. It's been great fun and I would not have missed it for the world, but now it's time for me to step through the next ... read more

Hi All, A really big thank you to Ms. Pauline Swaby-Wallace of the BEMSCA who allowed me to visit today. This was my main reason for visiting Bath. Fairfield House is the former residence of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia. He lived here while in exile. A really emotional visit for me today, I was shaking literally, to be able to see where H.I.M. lived. It was very moving to be able to walk around H.I.M.'s house and even to go into H.I.M.'s bedroom. A really special moment which I'm finding very difficult to put into words. Enjoy the photos. Jah Bless... read more

Arrived in Bath without a hitch, I'm so used to long train journeys that a one and a half hour train ride passed in the blink of an eye. The countryside here in the south west of England is really pretty. I took a taxi to the hostel, I didn't fancy lugging my suitcase on the bus. The hostel was in a beautiful old building. The staff were very friendly and helpful. So with an afternoon to kill me and a new found friend, Tara from Canada, went to look around the old Roman Baths. Really interesting and the free audio guide was very useful. The water was lovely and warm, I didn't go in but I did dip my hand in. After a pleasant couple of hours we went and found an Indian restaurant and ... read more
