Buddhafield festival The Buddhafield festival in Somerset, where I blagged my way in as a volunteer (they were desperate for an additional ‘poo fairy’) is way out hippie dippy. No drugs or alcohol allowed, nudity tolerated, but is mainly evident in elderly men, and there’s something about an elderly man naked except for socks, shoes and a shoulder bag that doesn't inspire me to stay in the moment or enjoy the natural countryside. And the opening ritual with Men of the Wildwood, (oh yes, and Women of the Wildwood too. Let's include them, or at least tag them onto the end because we're all-inclusive here) welcoming the Buddha made me want to giggle, with their green make up, and the Lord of the Wildwood's costume looking like the remnants of the faux leatherette cover of a ... read more

Well, I have been home almost a week now! I am still recovering from jet lag, and still want to go to bed at 8pm, but waking up early is great! I have caught a cold, thanks to the change in weather, more than anything else, I imagine! I have a diary entry or two left from the last weekend in Jaipur and Agra, and may update that soon, for those who are interested. Anyone who wants to know more about Asha, and the amazing work they do can find out more here: http://www.facebook.com/ashasociety1, or here http://www.asha-india.org and make donations here: https://www.givengain.com/cgi-bin/giga.cgi?cmd=donate&cause_id=1772&custom=1 thanks for all your support, and I hope you've enjoyed my blog. My Indian adventure has ended, but this is just the beginning... =D... read more

Still safe at home! Today I was given some sound advice for my travels- to leave England behind and to go empty handed. Of course I will not actually be empty handed, but the relief of having college and work behind me, and going to a place where I can be as anonymous as I wish, is great. I'll have my laptop and be able to contact whoever I want, but I feel that the less regularly I blog, update my facebook, email people, the more I will have that sense of needing to rely on God, and to live for the moment. Ash cloud related prayers seem to have worked, and the first phase of packing is complete, only 5 more packing attempts to go :) Until next time~ ciao... read more

So I thought I'd start my blog here, in the relative safety of home. I paid in the last of my fundraising yesterday, and discovered that through donations and fundraising events, and the incredible generosity of so many family and friends, I have paid in a total of about £1775! I'm so grateful to everyone who has helped me in any way. So for now I have 9 days to wait, desperately praying for everything to go smoothly, and for the ash cloud to fly away! It still doesn't feel real yet, but I'm sure it will after buying all my equipment tomorrow! Until next time... (Probably the day before I leave in my ridiculous excitedness!) Ruth... read more

So, at the beginning of 2008 we had had enough of our full time jobs, and decided to go and volunteer for a while, see where it took us and make no plans what so ever. We handed our notices in to our jobs and then got out the WWOOF book of farms and wrote down a list of about 20 that sounded interesting to us. We then wrote each name down on a piece of paper, mixed up the bits of paper and threw them onto the floor and then threw a coin over our shoulders and what ever farms they landed on we had to choose. So we had 1 farm each and then it was just a toss of a coin to see which one we ended up going to. As it turns ... read more
