Sion did not sleep well last night . Before turning in he had got ready for his trip to Blists Hill Victorian Town. He had helped me set up the sav nav for the journey and was looking forward to seeing his best friend Woolly Mammoth. I had been to Blists Hill a number of times . The first in the early 1980's when the site was in its infancy . I don't remember much about it apart from it being on a hillside site with many industrial brick buildings . Sion had been to Blists Hill a few years ago when Suzy the motorhome required some work to Kathrein the satellite dish . I am sure we were driven there by the guy who repaired the dish and he gave us two complimentary tickets "Have ... read more

This mornings offering on the calendar was a message from the Buddha and it set off conversation for the day. "All that we are is the result of what we have thought". We were going to brave the cold and wet weather and head off for Broseley . Close to the Ironbridge Gorge the small village houses Benthall Hall a National Trust property . We had to go today as it only opened Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays . The hall has no restaurant just a shepards hut which sold coffee and cakes . So the plans had to revolve around how far it was, what was nearby in terms of eateries and how to work the two in without massive detours around Shropshire . In the end it was relatively easy to find a solution . ... read more

With our successful book launch now a mere memory, I thought it might be time to take my small companion to a destination that Zoe and I had enjoyed many years ago. Woolly says – You mean there’s places you haven’t taken me to!!! With the women refusing to reveal any details I sat watching the countryside pass us by as we sped along the windy roads. The sun was poking it’s head out and I kept my paws crossed that the weather would play nicely for the day. Pulling onto the already crowded car park it looked as though we might have a few people to dodge round, as Jo sorted out the payment Zoe and I headed towards an information board that told me more about the site. Our first Valentines together and I buy my girlfriend, Fiona, a 2 night hotel stay on Buyagift.co.uk for a romantic getaway where you can select a hotel of your choice in many counties all over the UK. Picking where to stay wasn't too difficult and we decide on Ironbridge in Shropshire as our destination because neither of us have been there before and seems an interesting area to visit due to it's strong connection with the Victorian era. Shropshire is a county in England but it borders with Wales. Although known as one of England's quietest counties there still seems to be plenty to do and see with many historic houses, castles, museums and of course the famous Iron bridge. After a 2 hour car journey from Berkshire, we arrive at our hotel in Ironbridge. We ... read more

We started the day with a breakfast and joined by a gentleman who was leading a walk for Ironbridge Festival. The history was fascinating. In the late 1600's a community of Quakers developed a number of businesses. When the need arose for a work force, they went to Wales. This explains the ongoing "differences" between the folks on different sides of the River Severn. I want to figure out a way to understand the history of the Quaker tradition. It seems as we travel the various parts of the world, Quaker innovation is evident. The area around Ironbridge is described as the "Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution". This description is based on the idea that Abraham Darby perfected the technique of smelting iron with coke, in Coalbrookdale, allowing much cheaper production of iron. The Darbys were ... read more

Welcome to the Blists Hill Victorian Town ! I invite you to step back in the Victorian Times on a journey through one of the most beautiful, unique and accurate recreation of a Victorian Town at Blists Hill in the County of Shropshire ! This amazing recreation takes place over 55 acres at the very location where the Industry or more precisely the Industrial Revolution took place 200 years ago. Today, the remains of the iconic "Blast Furnaces" are now derelict cathedrals of brick from a different time standing in silence amongst a Nature that has claimed back its rights but still speak volumes of the misery, unimaginable hard work and sometimes tragedy that accompanied the everyday life of the workers who braved the defeaning sound, the heat and the many dangers of the well named ... read more

After a massive home cooked breakfast at the Falcon Inn in Painswick, we travelled through the back roads of the Cotswolds and the Midlands to the quaint Industrial Revolution town of Ironbridge. It was lovely driving through the green fields, along the high walled fences, the tight roads and being interrupted by charming villages every few miles. The only thing that broke the beauty of it all was being stuck behind slow moving vehicles, including a AA van towing a car, a couple of dairy trucks and a van towing a rather scary looking load of timber that looked like it was going to fall out onto the road. The hard thing was, that the roads were too narrow, too windy and too congested to pass them safely, so we were stuck behind them. If they ... read more

Our euros and kunas arrived and they make the holiday seem ever closer. I thought that the go box and the vignette came but the nice post man has taken them away which means a walk up to the post office tomorrow to pick them up. When we got to the post office it turned out it was not the go box but an adapter we had sent for. We got up early and took Suzy to Ironbridge to meet up with the guy who was going to look at Kathrein and repair her. We found the workshop fairly easily although it was well hidden in the middle of a large trading estate. We met Dave and his wife who walked round Suzy and explained what they were going to do re-assuring us that we would ... read more

Excursion to Ironbridge As planned, we made a journey for Ironbridge on Sunday, 5 September. We took the train to Telford Central and caught the bus. The bus went past several museums, e.g. Blists Hill Victorian Town, Coalport China Museum. We got off at High Street near Ironbridge. There were a lot of restaurants, hotels, and souvenir shops around the Ironbridge. Firstly, we crossed over the Ironbridge, and then popped in the Information Centre, which has been converted from the Tollhouse. We bought the Ironbridge Passport costing us £19.95 each, for us to visit 10 of the museums (in 12 months). We decided to visit three museums, i.e. Gorge Museum, Coalport China Museum, and Blists Hill Victorian Town. The Ironbridge was very picturesque. I took a number of pictures of the bridge. The Gorge Museum Secondly, ... read more

Please note that this Blog has been written by Zita in conjunction with ‘Rent-A-Friend-To-Walk-With-Helen-For-A-Day’ who sponsored the event. So I arrived at Bridgnorth, on the stream train, to meet Helen to find out that we weren’t walking that day as she was having a day off...Hoorah! But she advised me that we would need to prepare for the day ahead nonetheless. Preparations consisted of; A lovely girlie-lunch in a cool restaurant, an afternoon siesta, a little stroll around Bridgnorth, seeing Johnny Depp at the cinema whilst eating loads of popcorn, a Chinese dinner with crispy duck and finally a dose of Big Brother. (Oh and there was a quick stop at the convenience store to get some provisions for the ‘Day 17’ walk.) It was tough training but we managed to successfully get through it and ... read more
