Another gorgeous blue sky today - so kind of summer to stay with us. Off we went for a ride in Smart Arse to Ryde. We had heard there was a Classic Car rally on the seafront there so headed straight for the Esplanade and sure enough there were cars aplenty. First though we went along the pier. This dates back to the mid 1800s and is the second longest seaside pier in the country. Certainly long enough and we walked 1 mile just getting to the end and back. It used to have a tram running down the middle but that has now gone but it has a wooden roadway to take the cars and pedestrians to the ferry station at the end and there is also a set of train tracks. Looking across to ... read more

The bus crawled down Union Street towards the sea. The scooters from the weekend festivities had mainly left town and the place was returning to normal business. The odd Lambretta was left and I snapped a nice example down by the pier a few minutes later. A clothes shop had removed the real 1960s Lambretta window dressing and the drinkers were going about their early morning business in the Spoons. I alighted at the Bus Station. A healthy crowd was waiting to board the Island or Downs Breezer open top summer special buses. I crossed the railway line that feeds passengers straight out on to the Pier to link up with the cat to Portsmouth. Three hovercraft laid dormant next to their terminal. There was no sign of an imminent departure across the water. Portsmouth and ... read more

Last July I realised that I had little idea of what I wanted to do with my life, so in my 17 year old 'seems like a good idea' mind I came to the conclusion that the best thing to do was to decline all my University offers, book a flight, and (probably) realise that I still don’t know what to do with my life 11,000 miles away instead. I’m still not sure where my thought processes came from. Nevertheless, here I am, procrastinating as I prepare for my travels. I’ve been packing/cooking/watching Top Gear for all of 3 hours now, and managed to get halfway through my day bag to take on the plane as hand luggage, and despite how excited I am, I’m still not keen on packing, so I’ve decided to come and ... read more

Today we took the train to Portsmouth and then hopped on the catamaran ferry to the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight. The journey was very nice, but basically the same trip that we took to St Malo, France, because the ferry leaves from the same place and goes right past the Isle of Wight. When we got to the island, we had hoped to rent bicycles for half of the day but by the time we got to the bike shop, they were completely sold out of bikes! So, instead of biking, it was the heel-toe-express all day. Because we couldn't cover as much ground and see as much of the island as we would have liked to on foot, we decided that it would be best to walk along the beach from ... read more

After returning from Eastern Europe, it seemed as if we had brought the fine weather with us as London was treated to a summer-like spring. Not one to stay in doors at the worst of times, I needed little excuse to get out and enjoy the rare exposure to some Vitamin D. Over the next few weeks, there were many catch ups with people who were also coming out of hibernation, and we went to the London leg of the Rugby Sevens. Unfortunately New Zealand (NOT the All Blacks) didn’t win this leg, but we were treated the consolation that they won the entire series thanks to England’s dismal performance on their home soil. At the end of May, I joined Hannah and Clay as we went exploring the Yorkshire Dales and the Lakes District for ... read more
