Friday August 22,2014 This morning , I awoke a bit early than usual but it was nice to see the blue sky again! Came down around 9:15 am and had breakfast and greeted everyone. After breakfast, I got dressed and ready for the day! Today was my day to travel to LONDON but by driving with Jill who is an friend of the family. Before we got into the car, I asked if we could take some group pictures and we did get some good photos. Jill and I said goodbye around 11:15 am and jumped into her MINI-COOP which was nice! Our journey only lasted about an hour, she lives near Wimbeldon Park Tube Station which is really neat. Jill drove past WIMBLEDON itself and pointed out Courts 1&2 where Tennis "Greats" have played, which ... read more

Thursday August 21,2014 Awoke in Portsmouth with blue skies and some sun but the weather was playing tricks with everybody. I went downstairs and greeted everyone around 8:45 am. I had a nice breakfast then I walked back upstairs to change. After breakfast and "english" tea, we all went outside because it was very beautiful. I went to watch Philippa and Jeremy play tennis against Hermione and Jim, in the end the parents beat the "youngsters"! Great Rallies! Good game played by all! Around 10:35 am, I went with Jeremy to pick up a cousin of Philippa and a 2nd cousin once removed for Hermione & I. Jane Watkeys comes from Swansea, Wales and she is a retired doctor! It was great to see and catch up with all of her news! Later on, we set ... read more

Around March-April something got into me as I was among the first ones to reply to participate in the events organized by our Social Club at the company. This is how I ended up going to a roller skating disco in April with a confident approach: it can't be that hard to stand and just let myself roll ahead, right? It was a disaster for me. The last time I had wheels on my feet was when I was around 12 and I thought you can't forget that. Well, my brain remembered but my body did not. It was quite an argument inside my head when I had to face with the fact that I just can't stand up from my seat with the roller skates on my feet. When I had something to hold onto ... read more

Getting an early start on Friday, well 9.30am is pretty good for us; we pointed Georgie in the direction of St Michaels Mount….. Woolly says – Another one for my I Spy book, I was very excited until we arrived and could just make out the mount but with no possible means of getting there, I would have swum but Jo voted against this – no idea why!!!!! Ian was all for it and wanted me to take rocks for ballast!!! We re-programmed the two squawking females and set off to find Pendennis Castle, another one for my book. One hour later we gave up, the castle seems to have disappeared, neither of the females could find it neither could Jo even using maps and looking eagerly for brown signs, a bit of a mystery. Taking ... read more

And finally the day had arrived when I would set off on my journey around the world. The two weeks leading up to my departure date had been hectic but fun. My close friends and family had done me proud, organising farewell events, baking me a wonderful cake and being overly generous and caring all round. I also very much enjoyed a school reunion, where I met classmates from 27 years ago. Amazing! My preparations as far as I could tell, were as good as they were going to be. The exception to this was my GPS where I spent a full two days trying to work out how to put routes from my computer into the GPS to allow me to navigate safely on the bike without the need for tons and tons of paper ... read more

With just over two weeks to go until I leave Southsea, I'm starting to wonder when the sunshine will ever reappear! Days on end of overcast skies have brought with them sleet and snow and temperatures remain barely over freezing. My preparations in the mean time continue afoot and these have included a trial ride up to Woodlow Farm in Herefordshire where I have lived for the past year whilst working as a Flying Instructor. My Thorn Nomad expedition bike seems to be holding up well, coping with both the enormous combined weight of rider and equipment. I hasten to add that I am now a trim 12 stone 8 ibs instead of the 14 Stone 3 ibs bloater I was whilst teaching flying! No dodgy remarks there please! My route from Portsmouth to Frome Hill ... read more

Following an epic overland journey with Dragoman through Nepal and India over the Christmas and New Year period, realisation has set in that there are just 6 weeks remaining before I set off on my bike trip around the World. If I said I wasn't nervous, I'd be lying. Between now and then, I need to get my fitness levels back up, as I have been doing diddly squat Physical Training for the past month and a half, and plenty of drinking Kingfisher beer. Luckily Southsea Fitness Military circuits are on hand to sort that out. Also I shall be cycling to Woodlow Farm in Herefordshire at the end of January, my previous abode for the past year, to visit my good friends Bunty and Di, James and Jenny and Vicky. This will be a good ... read more

Bags are packed. Double checked I have everything. Finally time to say goodbye to the family who I won’t see for 3 weeks. My 4 year old hyperactive twins were shouting "Take me with you...I want to climb a mountain" My 18 year old daughter was "Yeah whatever, see you when you get back" as she was busy fixing her headphones to her ears. My lovely wife (and me too) were a bit emotional - but probably for different reasons. For me, the excitement and trepidation of the journey I was embarking on, and that I would miss the family whilst away, And for my wife the thought of having to manage 2 mini tornadoes single handily for the next 3 weeks.... read more
