Getting ready
Published: December 17th 2010Europe » United Kingdom » England » Hampshire » BasingstokeWell it's exactly one week until the off. Packing has not quite started, being the usual organised selves, but the excitement definitely has! Currently Britain is experiencing some of the worst weather conditions it's had in many years, with many airports suffering. All i gotta say is that Heathrow better be working next Christmas Eve night, cause if it's not me and Matty are swimming to first stop Singapore!! Spending the last few days at home with the kitten, Fizzy, who is purringly oblivious at the moment, asleep on the sofa next to me, that he will have to endure a 4 hour journey to Pembrokeshire, Wales next week to spend Christmas as my replacement with the folks and sister. Still four more days of work to go....incredibly hectic trying to organise life inside and outside ... read more
The Vyne, outskirts of Basingstone, was built as a great Tudor “power house’ which has been managed by the National Trust. The manor house was initially built in the 16th century, and was resided in by the Lord Sandys, who was the Henry VIII’s Chamberlain. Later on, the manor house became a family home, cherished by the Chute family for more than 350 years. Dramatic changes of the rooms and furniture were made over the years. The house is filled with an eclectic mix of fine furniture, portraits, textiles, and sculptures. Visitors are asked to enter the Stone Gallery, western edge of the house. The first showroom is the Vestibule where the Shute family used to invite their guests who had been crossing over the bridge. Next to the Reception, you will find the Palladian style ... read more

Day 25 Our last day in England and off to Hong Kong
Published: June 19th 2010Europe » United Kingdom » England » Hampshire » BasingstokeToday is our flight from London Heathrow to Hong Kong. Our departure is at 10.30 pm so we have all day with Wally and Maureen. We planned with them to see Peter’s cousins Robert and Julie at their house. Robert was unable to make it but Julie came along with her husband Matt, and sons Jack and George. Their daughter Holly was unable to make it as she is studying for her GCSEs this summer. It’s been twelve years since we have seen them and it was really good to catch up. They stayed for about three hours and had to go home as Jack had to start work at about 5 pm. After they left we went into Basingstoke and had some lunch and then went to Tesco to do bit of final shopping in ... read more
Day 09 From Yorkshire to Hampshire
Published: June 4th 2010Europe » United Kingdom » England » Hampshire » BasingstokeToday is our last full day in the UK before we fly off to our holiday in sun in Malta. We did get away a bit later than we anticipated as we weren’t sure what the traffic was going to be like. Being the last day of a long weekend we expected the traffic to be a lot heavier than what we encountered. We said our farewells to Robin and Jean and Kelly also came to see us off. The trip down the M1 to London was uneventful and we arrived at Wally and Maureen’s in the late afternoon. Three of us went to the local supermarket while Wally went to the pub, where I joined him a little later. We had a lovely dinner and Gina then got everything packed ready for the flight the ... read more

The Homeward Trail
Published: April 20th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Hampshire » BasingstokeThursday 16.04.09 Cuenca is a lovely city: though it has nearly half a million of a population it has a quiet hstoric feel about it; with its cobblestone streets and beautiful architecture, people are polite, friendly and are not rushed - I felt a lot safer there than in many of the other cosmopolitan cities. The only drawback was the weather; it was cold and rainy! An early start for my last day in Ecuador and packing took a little longer than usual. The bus to Guayaquil was leaving at 11:30 so I had time to visit the Museo de Banco Central Pumapungo not far from the river. There I saw one of the best exhibitions of indigenous cultural history of Equador: the displays were particularly interesting with a wide variety of artefacts well documented in ... read more
Reflections.... a year on
Published: February 4th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Hampshire » BasingstokeFebruary '09 It's just over a year since I completed the first stage of my South American travels. So, before I start round two, some reflections on the first trip may influence the way I tackle this forthcoming venture. The script on the blog from my first trip encapsulated my first impressions rapidly typed up in a variety of internet cafes and enhanced with a selection of photographs which were often difficult to upload. The idiosyncrasies of the internet systems throughout the countries visited and their volatile reliability often resulted in frustration. However there were very few total failures and technology triumphed in the end. I would be happy to revisit any of the countries travelled. I found a welcoming friendly atmosphere wherever I went and the hospitality I received was in many cases overwhelming. Apart ... read more
