Camden Town and Mayfair
Published: May 9th 2010Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Camden TownLondon Day 4 We awoke to a brisk, misty morning. The threat of shopping hung thick in the air - the scent was strong... With the weather not conducive to visiting BOB's and the fact we had ticked most off the list, Camden Town and markets seemed a logical choice. The tube, again, beckoned to be ridden and the predictable wait of 1 minute seemed never ending. With a rush of air and 'mind the gap' we were off, speeding into what was surely going to be a purchasing paradise. Upon arrival, the crowds were a throbbing mass, converging as one onto the escalators, surely propelling them, and us into shopping utopia...not to be! Well, it was OK but nothing seen could have been described as unique. A large Queen Vic Market, spread out over ... read more

Published: November 14th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Camden TownWalking the Thames - South Side What a beautiful day for a walk along the Thames - sunny, warm and lots of people to watch. Kayla was snapping pictures at every turn in the river. This route from Westminister Bridge to Tower Bridge has a wide and very popular river side walkway, much more accessible than the narrow and sometime non existent walkway on North side. As we were on the south side we got great sun-filled views across the river to "The City" the original town of London with St Paul's Cathedral and the Tower mixed in with dramatic new architecture. On the Southwark side most of the buildings are new and equally dramatic design. East towards Tower Bridge is the new City Hall on a spacious and shiny walkway called the Queens Walk. Published: November 14th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Camden TownHampstead Heath & Wedding Party Today, Saturday we let Leanne and Brad be our guides to North London. So we walked from home to Hampstead Heath (40 minutes) in a slight drizzle. Lunch from the local Saturday morning stands at the Heath was yummie Sausage Burgers and Coke. We got a good view of London to the south from Parliament Hill and tried to spy Greenwich with Brad's binoculars and iPhone ( for directions). Leanne went off for a hair appointment and Brad lead through the network of park trails, trees all in fall colours. That evening we participated in the Leanne and Brad wedding celebration - London version. We taxied with the happy couple, dressed in wedding day White Dress and Suit to Shepherd's Bush and spend the night visiting with their many and some ... read more

Published: November 13th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Camden TownA Football Game, Touring Whitehall & Westminster Nothing like walking around to cure jet lag, although there was only one hour's difference between Livingstone Zambia and London, so there wasn't as much jet lag as there was just plain lack of sleep from the plane flight. In any case, we decided that a London walkabout was the thing to do. We were spending our last week away from home with our newly-married daughter and son-in-law. What a nice flat they have, and with a convenient extra bedroom, which we very much appreciated, given that accommodation in London is exorbitantly expensive. It was Richard's wish to attend a football game (soccer in North America), so lucky us, the Queens Park Rangers were playing Reading in Shepherd's Bush. Leanne & Brad had reserved tickets. It was an experience ... read more

Published: November 14th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Camden TownRocks, Dinosaurs and Albert Today Richard took Kayla to the Natural History Museum in Kensington so she could see the rock room for herself. She patiently wandered through the 300 cases of rock samples without a single yawn. Richard could have stayed there all day but there were still dinosaurs to see. Then a short walk over to Hyde Park, a picture of the Albert Memorial, glorious fall colours along the Serpentine and across Green Park to Marble Arch. We reached Camden Town tube stop in time to buy supper fixings at the very international and busy Sainsbury’s. Then home for supper and Africa and wedding picture viewing with Leanne and Brad. ... read more
Botswana Wild Days 1-4, Sep 28-Oct 2
Published: October 2nd 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Camden TownFirst off, we're still not in Botswana yet. We've been enjoying the beautiful fall weather in London since arriving Wednesday morning, and visiting with the newlyweds. So glad we did this before going on the next long leg of the trip. It's an 11-hour flight to Johannesburg from here, and then another 2-hour flight to Maun, Botswana. Time zone just one hour ahead of London, but still a very long trip. Because they live in Camden, our daughter and son-in-law are near some of the most interesting parts of London. This is a walking city - at least we think so. So Wednesday Leanne took us for a walk along the canal to Camden Market and then on to Regent's Park. Camden Market is quite an interesting place and we were sorry not to experience it ... read more
Camden Town and Primrose Hill
Published: August 19th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Camden TownTuesday was a warm London day and Paul and I visited Camden Town, the spiritual home of Coldplay, the famous Camden Town Markets and sadly the seedier side of London. Yes the place is eclectic and no doubt you can buy things in the markets here that you probably won’t get anywhere else in London however stepping onto Camden High Street from the tube station was quite an experience. I sensed a number of suspicious characters hanging around the tube station as we made our way up Camden High Street. The market stalls on the High Street are dominated by cheap t-shirts and new music but as we made our way up the street it became apparent that although there may be some hidden gems in the stalls, the majority of stuff on sale is basically ... read more

Published: July 24th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Camden TownLeaving New Zealand was one of the scariest, biggest things i have ever done. I don’t think the reality of it really hit until i was on the plane. Before that it was just excitement. I was scarred, afraid excited, alone in its entirety. I started to cry for what i had left behind and for what was about to come. After ten hours of Movies, Lots of music even more food, Views across Austrailas dry land and an island that look like it was floating in the clouds, i had arrived to singapoore. Tired, and sore i new i still had to face yet another flight only this one longer and was destination bound. Lucky for me i managed to get front eccomany seats so had a bit of room, and went to sleep, as ... read more

Published: June 11th 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » Camden TownAll packed and ready to leave, found a cab that will take us to Heathrow for £30 which is a good deal as tubes in chaos due to strike. Using the laptop has been a challenge as conection keeps dropping off, so writing from the internet cafe I found yesterday. Have all photos on disc so will put more up when I get home. Thanks to all who have followed the blogs and taken the time to respond to us, it has been enjoyable for James to record his thoughts. I will print this blog so he has a permanent record of his trip which has been a great experience for us both and will give us many memories for a long time. WE will be back in NZ on Saturday @ 11.30am.... read more
