This excursion was interesting. I think it is because Poole has a stunning natural harbour, the world is second largest after Sydney and is famed for its magnificent beaches. The town of Poole centres round the bustling old Quay, where you can find lovely places for relax. At first we had tour on the boat. Than we walked in the city. This tour was fantastic.... read more

Got caught in a bit of traffic, so a bit longer to reach Ed’s than expected, so he was starving by the time I turned up, so we headed straight out, on foot, to Frankie & Benny’s for a very nice meal (I seem to keep saying that, there’s lots of nice food everywhere I go), with a bit of wine, and another good catch up - our family really doesn’t see each other than often! Back to the house for a bit of a look on Facebook and caught up with Hannah’s wedding pictures - lots of them! Then crashed out… Ed had gone to work by the time I woke up. Spent the morning on the internet, sorting out car tax, on Facebook, looking up a few travel bits and bobs, and want my ... read more

Dear Bo and Dud, I returned to work this week for the ‘final countdown’ 8 weeks to go!!! The last 6 weeks have been a frenzied attack on caravan and awning, with a couple of supplement breakettes to try things out. The purchase of new awning poles and a chest fridge drew us to a little place called Brompton by Sawdon, about 15 miles from Scarborough. A lovely flat site, so the awning went up well. However, after 5 days of tugging and pulling, Howard insisted that we look into getting the canvas extended by about 18 inches. The chest fridge was an immediate ‘hit’, we are astonished and delighted at the amount of lager, white wine, tonic (for the gin) and fizzy water (for the Irish) that we can pack in. It works from 12 ... read more

We have about an hour for dedicated writing time this morning, which I spend overlooking an amazing cove of deep green water. (For any chemists out there, it looks like the color of copper in solution.) The rocks are red and it reminds me of southern Utah in a way. After the writing’s done, we set out on a long hike down the coast to Weymouth, a classic English beach holiday town. I think this hike was my favorite so far. We hiked the cliffs along the coast, which are chalky white and completely perfect. No wonder this coast is a world heritage site—and no wonder I saw a sign saying you aren’t allowed to take photography for publication without written permission, although I find it very strange to in this way “copyright” a coastline. But ... read more

When I say early start, I really mean an early start—we stumbled out to our coach at about 4:35, and we were late. Why leave so early? Stonehenge, my friend, Stonehenge. A lot of tourist books I’ve read say that Stonehenge is a disappointment because you just walk along this rubber trail by the stones, and that’s it. Well, apparently each morning, two or three educational groups get to actually go into Stonehenge, and guess who was in one of them. Our appointment at Stonehenge was at 5:30 am. The morning was thick with mist, so you couldn’t even see the place until we drove right by it and suddenly it emerged out of the dark. It was so amazing to be able to walk around and touch those stones that have been there for who ... read more

Glasgow to SwanageGeoff Burt It’s sometime since we’ve taken the opportunity to make blog entries so consequently this is on the first full morning in Swanage on the coast of Dorset in England. This is where John William Cole Burt and his wife and kids lived before emigrating to Australia about 150 years ago. Get your atlas out! JWCB was Geoff’s great great grandfather and was a stonemason and occasional farmer when he lived here. We’ve been here before but there is something about a place where you know many of your forebears lived and worked for so many years in the past. Hard to imagine exactly what the town looked like then but certainly unpaved roads were the norm. A relative (if not direct) George Burt played a very significant role in the development of ... read more

Hi everyone, I'm back! So hopefully I've spoken to plenty of you already and will be seeing you in the next week or two. Sadly, this means that my life of leisure is over. Well, my time in the sun at least appears to be up. What's going on with the great British weather, is this some kind of punishment for having too much fun over the past 6 months?! Already everything is beginning to seem like a distant memory. If I haven't bored you all enough already, get ready for more photos and stories when I see you so that I can relive all my adventures again. So now I'm back and trying to keep myself busy, pretending to look for a proper job when really I'm planning my next escape - place your ... read more
