Today we left Carrie's to drive to Cousin Liz's at Collumpton near Exeter. It was quite a long drive and we were held up due to a traffic accident which added an hour to the trip. We arrived at Liz's and were made feel very welcome. Liz and Jerry are lovely people. We enjoyed a lovely dinner and chatted well into the evening.... read more

Railway Trip Lovely trip on a sunny day. The railway has been preserved for many years and was known as the Dart Valley Railway. The railway was initially a commercial concern. Later they took on the Paignton Kingswear line when BR decided to close it. The commercial concern concentrated on the new line and have now fully given control of the original railway to the South Devon Railway. Totnes Folk Club (Paul Downes) We had a meal at an ethicy cafe. We were slightly surprised when a lady with her dog on a bit of string was allowed to dine. It is hard to discover yourself while you are still tethered by your mobile phone. I'm sure dogs look after their mistresses. Food was good and different. We arrived in good time and Julia was given ... read more

Dartington Hall We walked to Dartington Hall by way of the riverside footpath. The grounds were very interesting with friendly robins and sculptures. We went to have a look at the retail opportunity, but mainly high class stuff with very little local input beyond the obligatory arts. Totnes Went back to Totnes town in the rain to finish off where we got to at closing time the day before. Totnes certainly outstrips Malvern in interest and weirdness, but not in charity shops. Session (English unaccompanied) The Albert was very close to the campsite and we did't even have to cross the river. The pub brews its own beer and had interecting characters. One was a German with a motorbike he worked on his room. He had recently discovered his landlady was a witch. We do live ... read more

Totnes Paignton (open top bus) Looking at Totnes from the top of the open top bus gave us a new viewpoint. Progress was a bit slow with road works and traffic in Paignton, but our friends were still waiting at the bus station. We went for coffee at their flat in Goodrington. Paignton Kingswear (steam train) We could watch the train from their flat and picked it up from Goodrington Station, as it was closer. Kingswear Dartmouth (ferry) Some nice views from the end of the ferry pier. Dartmouth Totnes (river boat) Dartmouth is an interesting place to look around. I found a chandlers and bought a collapsible bucket. The benches overlooking the River Dart and the railway on the other bank are a good place to linger. Interesting stories as we went up the river ... read more

Back to Murvi Arrived at Murvi just after 9. There is not much in Lee Mills. The famous Lee Mill is now part of the Edinburgh Woolen Mills so not that special. There is also a large Motorhome sales place to the west of the village. Not tempted to exchange Pic (yet). Back towards Murvi there is a largish Tesco to fritter away the hours. When we were thinking about lunch, we had the call to pick up the van. They had found a sticking solenoid and had added silicone sealent to the wastes. On to Totnes The site at Totnes (Steamer Quay Caravan Club) was all it was reported to be. Very convenient for Totnes town and very very convenient for the boats from Dartmouth. All pitches are grass with no electricity, but there is ... read more

Wednesday 23 March and Thursday 24 March 2011 On Wednesday we drove from Oxford to Exeter via Bath. We didn't have long in Bath, so we tried to cram as much in as we could. First stop was Royal Crescent - a crescent-shaped row of Georgian houses that were built as holiday accommodation for the well-to-do. The Georgians were seriously into symmetry - all the buildings are symmetrical and the rooms even have false doors to balance the real ones! One of the houses has been turned into a museum. Each room is 'equipped' with a volunteer who provides information on that room and can answer questions - it's great. As a consequence, we spent far too much time in the house, chatting to the volunteers! We had been hanging out to have fish 'n chips ... read more

Lots of training since I last posted an entry. This includes a 101 mile ride around Dartmoor so I am up to doing the longest leg of the JoGLE which will be about 97 miles. However this will be after about 3 days of hard riding so it is not a true comparison. I have had the pleasing news that my daughters partner Ewen will be joining me for the first 4 days of the ride, JoG to Edinburgh, which will ease the potential lonliness until I am well on my way. Since my last entry I have managed to do some reseach ( Google ) on manboobs. Here is what I have found out. The medical name for the condition is gynecomastia. However most of us ( well maybe not you, particularly if you are ... read more

This is not the first time I wanted to visit Dartmoor region in Devonshire. Last time it was when I had a short stay in Exeter, but I never had an opportunity due to limited time. Having gone through all the options to get to Dartmoor, finally I stuck a deal with one of my good friend to drive all the way along to the Dartmoor for a pint of beer and trip to the nearest pub for a famous pub meal. The weather was exceptionally good. The spring has kicked off early in the year. We drove along the country lanes, passing many private dwells and farmlands. The landscape was slowly changing as the vehicle roared pass empty lanes. Saturday early morning is too early for many Brits. We took the advantage of the deserted ... read more

Amazing that 16 days have passed since my last entry. I have not been idle and have done approximately 250 miles on the bike with a few less miles running. I don't keep much of a record of my activities because I don't get a lot out of keeping statistics. However I do have a couple of measures of progress. One is an uphill mile run from my house which at its best last year was 9 minutes. Well I did on one occasion recently do it in 8.1/2 mins. The other measure is the rise up to Haldon on the old bike. Again I managed to gain 30 seconds or so. So I can at least say that I am fitter than last year. However I did not do the JoGle last year. I ... read more

Catch up in Devon Hi all, it has been a while since I have updated you on my life and adventures in England, and I am afraid you are going to have to wait to hear about my present activities until later. Right now I plan on finishing the story of my family’s visit to England. Now to recap their trip thus far, they arrived in London, played, saw a play, and ate amazing food (if you really want to know read the previous entry). After a harrowing car ride to Bristol my grandparents and parents then departed for their week on holiday in Devon, which is where the story picks up again. My family was lucky enough to find a gem of accommodation in the Woodford Bridge Country Club, which featured all the expected ... read more
