We jumped in the car and left Cwmbran and headed out to Bath. Once again a little difficult to navigate around with some of the exits at roundabouts unmarked. I have learned that if I can't find the exit that I want...... I just keep circling till I find what I m looking for. I am quite sure that I am making thre locals nuts. OK now we found Bath... pretty good signs to the long term parking. Let the fun begin. very poor signs to find the big attraction here, the Roman baths. Got on the hop on hop off tour and found the general location. The wait was worth it!!! The area was excavated starting around the 1800's. A magnificent walk thru the 2000 year old baths and pumping house. We were walking on ... read more

Sidmouth One crazy English day in early March we braved the weather conditions and drove out to Sidmouth, on the northern beaches near Exeter. After sampling a lovely creamed tea (aka Devonshire tea) while the rain beat down and the winds whipped up a frenzy, we were lucky to snatch a limpse of lovely sunshine as we walked along the stoney beaches. Once again as in Brighton, we experienced the deafening sounds of the waves sweeping back over the rocks, although this time we were thoughtful enough to catch it on film (even if we had no idea where we were when we were commentating, with me saying we were at Exmouth and Davin thinking we were at Budleigh Salterton... You will find this amusing when we can actually play you the clip) In a ... read more

Lucretia and Craig Lucretia and Craig (Davin's sister and her husband) arrived in London in early February, landing in Heathrow just hours before the airport was shut due to snow (in the same night we were stranded in the Dublin airport thanks to said snow storm!). While a very exciting welcome to the northern hemisphere with neither of them having before seen falling snow, it was a bit of a temperature shock having come from 30 degree days on Thailand beaches. Plus there was the sheer pain-in-the-bum factor as they struggled their way through snowy streets with copious amounts of luggage and a non-existant public transport system. Craig, a teacher, had a job lined up at a school about an hour north of London, and so started work fairly promptly. However, he had one week ... read more

AUSTRALIA DAY You didn't think we'd forget just because we weren't actually in the country did you? Quite the contrary, our sense of patriotism was inflated to such proportions that we started sprouting such phrases as 'you flamin hooligan' and 'you're a bloody galah' without the normal fear of social humiliation and disownership that normally follows such talk in the Great Land. Indeed, I have discovered that once abroad, 'Alf' from Home and Away actually becomes a bit of an icon, looked upon fondly and merticulously emulated with a sense of pride for his mastery of our great language. I'll be honest - most Australia Day festivities that i have participated in are more to do with the fact that we get a paid day off work than the celebration of any anniversary. I, too, ... read more

We been to Glastonbury (Shekin Ashram) Climb to Tor Hill to watch Sunset and caught by frozen wind but it was worth to be on top and it was not too bad as next day I had to go into the sea-Devon as a part of Challange but believe me, It was extraordinary experience. Before removing cloths I was already frozen but I think there is no words to explain the experience in to the Sea and after coming out of Sea for a 20 mins. However Hot Chocolate and Hitter rechareged me again to climb Red Rock, overviewing the Sea. It was bit slippery climbing but we managed and eventually we found easiest wooden steps to climb it ;-)) Nevermind I always like Adventures. Here are some of the pics of our Journey, I wish ... read more

After umming and arrring for a few weeks, and plenty of pros and cons lists later, Dav and I decided to buy a car so that we get the most out of our time here. This was particularly the case in Exeter as to get anywhere on a weekend on public transport is just a nightmare - for example, we were looking at heading up to Dartmoor to have a look around, a 30minute drive by car, and it was going to take us FOUR HOURS on the bus!! So, unless we were going to take a week off at a time, a car seemed to be the sensible way to go. We talked about it in passing with Des (landlord), and asked him bits and pieces of advice as we tried to figure out what ... read more

Life in Exeter As you may have noticed, and/or commented to us, time between blogs has extended somewhat since our travelling has noticibly stalled. This is simply while we allow the bank account to rejuvinate and we try to assimilate into this crazy English countryside... The home... Since arriving in Exeter, and after a short stint in the local backpackers, we were able to find accomodation - renting a room in a townhouse owned by an older couple, Jackie and Des, who's children have grown up and left a few empty rooms. The house is in a handy position, being only a few minutes walk from town (and hence the bus for Dav) and a 20 minute stroll to my place of employement - the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. The house is also shared ... read more

I turned up to a small farm on Friday night to start my survival training weekend with Intrepid Expeditions. A company run by an ex-Royal Marine called Nigel. (Fantastic company - I thouroughly recommend them) It was a surprise to turn up, and see Chris - one of the members from my Everest trek. Turns out he is on the same trip. It was nice to have a bit of a catch up. We headed on up to a small copse nearby to start building our survival shelter. I teamed up with those accompanying me to Sweden in February (most were members and listeners of Severn Sounds Radio ). The new team quickly got to work on creating a shelter for 14 people, using a tarpaulin and the surrounding trees (check out the photos). As it ... read more

Hi all...well I am now in Exeter and what a day I have had! 4 buses, a train and a long long walk with my heavy port up and down stairs and god knows how many streets....trying to find this hostel which is god knows where! I nearly gave up at one point! At least I have now eaten and am now washing my clothes! Those who have been following my travels will know this is a big thing and I got quite excited when I started the machine! Not sure what the rest of the day holds but right now I am exhausted! Carrying a 20 k port up and down stairs is no joke! I am totally ready to come home! This has not been easy and yous only know half of it! OK ... read more
