2 weeks before i depart our sacred land in search of the finer things in life on the exotic island of borneo. An overall 24 hr stop over flight to bangkok, and 2 connecting flights to kuala lumpar and kota kinabalu, borneo await me. Ill be sure to learn my DVT exercises before i go! Am currently not prepared at all and have booked these flights as a spur of the moment decision! My trip at the moment is in need of some much needed organising and any tips on where to go, what to see e.t.c would be greatly appreciated! The obvious choice is the mountain summit of mount kinabalu in the sabah region of borneo but im looking into doing some jungle expeditions and have no idea where in sabah or sarawek it would ... read more

one glimpse of my borneo lonely planet tells me why i want to go here! yes its the cheap lady boys..... its supposed to be one of the most biodiverse places in the world for wildlife and fauna, which is mainly due to its isolation from mainland asia, although severe logging and the demand for biofuel is putting pressure on the rainforests of borneo. Heres a map of places i have been to already in the world, have never visited anywhere east of germany so i doubt my basic spanish will come in handy here! si fly si space si moon......... and yes i am still writing this from the confines of my house in lovely devonia! proper job!... read more

This time having spent almost a year and a half in India, I returned back to Devonshire without any prior notice given to my friends. It was a shamble and a great mess of the year, as it became clear that everyone struggled to find a place for me within a short notice. I was lost and I was completely despaired of being disorganised. It was the time for me to sit inside the waiting room at the coach station in Exeter and become thoughtful as ever. There were many thoughts and none of those were helpful. At around 6pm, Tim rang me and told me that he is on his way to pick me up. He became the saviour of the day. I was so delighted for a while but I could not enjoy the ... read more

Despite a dreary Cornish morning and warnings of more bad weather to come, the sun poked from behind the clouds for most of the afternoon. One awful hill approaching Exeter aside, this was a lot less troubling. We saw a 15% gradient sign of a fairly steep climb, but we'd done far steeper already. Rolfe got another puncture. Plymouth is a bit of a dump and all its traffic lights were on red. We reacquainted ourselves with the other End-to-Enders the Exeter Youth Hostel. No-one had given up yet. 64 miles. Just over 5 hours in the saddle.... read more

The agricultural shire of Devon in South-West England has a long tradition of international trading with the manufacture of wool and other clothing related industries. Exeter, Devon's capital city, was started by the Romans but they didn't stay there for long. However, they did build a wall around their fort, a wall partly preserved to the present time. By the start of the 16th Century, Exeter became one of the major cities in England. Wool was traded and exported out of the country and prosperous Exeter became home for many rich merchants. Therefore, Exeter has many great buildings from the Tudor and Stuart periods. During the industrial revolution Exeter, lacking natural ressources, lost importance and wealth. During the beginning of WW2, Exeter became the target for bombing and big areas of the historic city were hit ... read more

Ok so this is my first blog... I'm not quite sure how to work this yet but here goes. At the moment I'm in dark, cold Devon but all my planning for my flight out to Mexico on the 10th of January is pretty much done! On the whole everything is booked and paid for... * flights * insurance * vaccinations * visa * TEFL course in Tulum I've hopefully linked this to a map showing my route for the 6 months I'm away. ... read more

On July 4th, I celebrated my independence from the British by... exploring their countryside. It didn't feel like the 4th at all, though I did see an American flag - more on that in the next blog entry. First stop, Exeter in Devonshire. See a map of the trip to the left. I traveled with some friends and a baby, Jonah, who was lovely to have as a neighbor in the back seat, though he spent much of the time sleeping. Once we got to Exeter, we walked past Exeter's City Wall, which is almost 2000 years old, dating back to Roman times. This took us down the the Quayside, where trade ships used to come in on a canal connected to the River Exe. Much of Exeter's commerce was based on the wool trade (yay, ... read more

My first hot days in England. IT DIDN'T RAIN FOR 3 WHOLE DAYS... and it was sunny and while I don't think that I actually got a tan, I stopped loosing my tan for 3 days :) It makes such a difference to have photo's with blue sky in the background. On Friday morning I caught the train from Southampton down to Exeter (south-west of London on the coast) where my cousin Camilla is at uni. When I left Southampton at 8am it was raining and cold and when I got off the train at midday it was warm and sunny with no clouds :) I got a tour of her uni and then we went into town where I saw Exeter Cathedral, which was huge. We went down to the river and had a ... read more
