Day 52 Friday 31st July Goodbye Germany…. Hello Czech Republic After a great sleep in, we were up, packed, had had our breakfast in the carpark, and were away by 11am, heading back towards Dresden on our way to the Czech Republic capital of Prague. After somehow managing to escape the force-field that is Dresden, we finally crossed over into the Czech Republic in the early afternoon. Flo doesn’t register Czech, so we had to revert to the old-fashioned way of getting lost, relying on signage and maps… Our plan was to try to find an information centre and/or follow signs to the nearest caravan park in Prague. While we did momentarily find a caravan park sign, we soon lost it again, having more luck a few kilometres later when stumbling upon an information centre. ... read more

Day 47 Sunday 26th July Long drive north back into Germany… and the ‘handbrake-ing’ incident It was an early start to the day as the plan was to drive up to Berlin in one day if we could, a good 700km away. We were packed and away from camp (and the psycho lady who worked there… seriously she was disturbed… apparently our car was too noisy?!) by 8.30am to begin the long drive north and back into Germany again. By mid morning we were all a little peckish but had limited options with the day being Sunday and many places shut. We stopped off at a small city called Regensburg, where we somehow managed to stumble upon a large café that was serving a brunch buffet for a reasonable price. So, given the travelling mentality, ... read more

Day 43 Wednesday 22nd July Day trip back into Germany to check out the Disney castle After moving our tents out to another section in the campground (not sure why, we just did as we were told), we hit the road for our day trip back into Germany to check out Schloss Neuschwanstein, the picture-perfect castle made famous, at least to many children around the world, by Disney. The drive there was just spectacular, with the views as we passed through the Austrian Alps simply breathtaking. The lovely blue skies and warm mid-twenty degree temperatures really enhanced the scenery, with the green of the trees and the blue of the skies overhead both as vibrant in colour as each other. The tunnels cut in through the mountains were also incredible, as well as being incredibly ... read more

Day 40 Sunday 19th July Rothenburg ob der Tauber The lovely Danish couple Ilse and Jan woke us at 10am… They were off for the day and both wanted to say goodbye as well as give us our amended extension cord back. Craig had got talking to Jan the night before about our issues with the camping electricity outlets being different to the adapter we had, and kind Jan had a spare camping end and so wired up our lead for us. Very very kind and extremely helpful! The weather that greeted us as we stirred our sleepy bodies was much better than the intermittent downpours throughout the night before. The skies still showed remnants of the overnight rain with patches of grey clouds, but these too cleared by lunchtime, revealing glorious blue skies. The ... read more

Day 34 Monday 13th July Arriving in Sailauf We had a great sleep in until the school bell woke us all up at 9am on the dot. Any hope of then getting back to sleep was of course out of the question, with hundreds of screaming children, without volume control, running around above us. After packing up camp, we headed over to the pool to spend the morning there doing some itinerary planning for the rest of the trip as we weren’t due at Sailauf until 3pm. The Schollkrippen pool was gorgeous, with a massive main pool and diving board, plus a waterfall, all in a really nice green setting. That, combined with mainly clear blue skies, made for a great place to spend the morning. After the planning was done, and some lunch and ... read more

Day 31 Friday 10th July Crossing into Germany Had a fantastic sleep-in until 10am - the constant drizzly weather is hardly motivating - and on the road just before lunch. It took us ages to finally cross into Germany as the weather was so terrible, with a quick lunch break at a service station seeing us all crowded under the open boot of the car trying to avoid getting wet. On the exciting side, we did have our first (and hopefully last) incident of driving on the wrong side of the road… Craig was coming off the motorway and went into the left lane as our next turn was a left one. In Craig’s defence, it was an easy mistake to make with poor road markings and signage, and so was not just a slip ... read more

Day 26 Sunday 5th July A flying trip into Aachen, Germany then on to Maastericht Had a good sleep-in, the little cretins next door still sleeping-in themselves. We really should have gone and played ball right next to their tent just to even up the score card... Packed up and away by 11am, swinging into Germany to explore the city of Aachen. Once again Flo let us down with her ‘campsite’ which turned out to be an industrial area (seriously, how old is the camping information in these sat-navs?), and so we headed into town in search of an information centre. Lucretia and I eventually found one, incidentally exploring most of the old city in the process as we attempted to find our way around. Back at the car and after a quick lunch, we ... read more

Day 23 Thursday 2nd July Crossing the English Channel, into France and up to Brugge in Belgium After a lovely last breakfast of scrambled eggs thanks to chef Carolyn, we were off and away by 9.30am, leaving a poor heartbroken dog behind us (Bodhi knew something was up and I have never before seen a dog sulk with such a sad sad face before...) From Bedfordshire, we drove straight across to Dover and began the looong process of boarding the ferry across to mainland Europe - lots of queues and waiting - but we had plenty of snacks that Carolyn had baked for us so we didn’t starve. We finally got on board the ferry and set off at 2pm, saying goodbye to England for a few months. The actual ferry was really nice, a ... read more

Day 16 Thursday 25th June There were a few queezy bellies in the morning, and so our journey out of town was a little longer as we tried to find a KFC or McDonalds to get an infusion of greece into the hungover bodies in the car... We had no luck however, and this also put us a bit off course, meaning a later start to the day. Our destination for the day was Alnwick* Castle, where parts of the first two Harry Potter films, along with many many other movies were filmed. We parked up and went in to have a look around, although we were too late in the day to get the most out of paying entrance to the main castle area, with Craig and Lucretia deciding to come back the next ... read more

Day 9 Thursday 18th June The wind really picked up in the early morning hours, causing the tarp to flap about like crazy, waking all four of us... and probably all of our neighbours too. So after an early morning tarp demolition, it was back to bed and a nice little deserved sleep-in. The morning weather when we woke for a second time was again quite miserable, so after packing all our belongings away into the car (again... this is wearing a bit thin... already... not good!), we hit the road for the drive up into Scotland! We stopped at a service station for some lunch and a loo-break, and discovered that they had free wireless internet. (The service stations on the side of the motorways in the UK are incredible - they have everything ... read more
