" Depend on your walking stick and not on other people " What an interesting and thought provoking Japanese proverb and one which hits the right spot. If you depend on others they can let you down badly. Depending on yourself and your own devices can be the better option. When I was young my dad brought home a book. I cannot remember the full title but it definately had the words "Phrase and Fable " embedded into the text . It was full of wise sayings . Some that were no longer used and were archaic and old fashioned . Others were still part and parcel of the rich English language . Some borrowed from others. Some totally unique . I loved that book. It smelt old . Turning its pages it smelt musty . ... read more

Jim and Janet headed off on Tuesday to pick up their new caravan a couple of hours drive away, very exciting. Rob and I spent a relaxing morning then headed into Bakewall for a while in the afternoon to post some postcards and say hi to Bob and June. The caravan was collected and they set up in a caravan park near the dealer to do a test run for the night. Wednesday I took Bob and June to a medical appointment then Rob over to Chesterfield to a specialist appointment. Arriving at the Hospital in Chesterfield I was amazed to see there was a fruit and veg stall at the entrance! Apparently the NHS food is that bad. Had to take a photo of that! Arrived home to Jim and Janet pulling in the caravan ... read more

Janet volunteers on a Friday at Chatsworth House, which is about 3 miles from their place. The definite bonus of this is that we can get into the house for free instead of paying £24! Chatsworth is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and has been passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family. "Chatsworth House is renowned for the quality of its art, landscape and hospitality, and it has evolved through the centuries to reflect the tastes, passions and interests of succeeding generations. Today, Chatsworth contains works of art that span 4,000 years, from ancient Roman and Egyptian sculpture, and masterpieces by Rembrandt, Reynolds and Veronese, to work by outstanding modern artists, including Lucian Freud, Edmund de Waal and David Nash. There are over 30 rooms to explore*, from the magnificent Painted Hall, ... read more

Tuesday Jim, Janet and I set off early for the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, 10 miles west of Birmingham. It is an open air museum of rebuilt buildings. It is set on land reclaimed from a railway goods yard, disused lime kilns, canal arm and former coal pits. There are over 50 shops, houses and other industrial buildings from around the area which have been relocated to form a specially built village. It portrays life spanning 300 years of history, with a focus on 1850-1950. The area is known as the Black Country due to the coal mining, coking, iron foundries, glass factories, brickworks and steel mills which all produced a high level of air pollution and made the buildings etc black. It was the most wonderful day out, and it was a whole ... read more

Fridays Janet volunteers at Chatsworth House, which is about 3 miles away. It is a very impressive house that is well worth a look both the house and the gardens. Each year they hold a country fair which I have been hearing about for years but this year I'm here for it. Rob, Jim and I went on Friday and Janet, Jim and Jim's mum Ann went on Saturday. It was a bit like the Perth Show without all the judging of things. There was a main arena with displays all day and some rides and then rows and rows of tents selling everything from country clothing, petware, gifts, food and samples, lots of gin stalls to cars and BBQ huts. We had pretty good weather with a few small showers but nothing to put a ... read more

Heading home to Derbyshire today from London, but had to stob to take a photo of the Raks News and Religious Goods Shop! We passed it each day on the bus and it was just down the street from a Catholic church. We thought it was such an interesting combination of everything, it it also sold lottery tickets and was an off-licence, so it had everything covered. Sadly it was closed when we stopped as I would have loved to have popped in. Good trip back considering it was a long weekend. Went to see Janet's mum and dad, Bob and June to pick up the dogs (Twix and Poppy - cocker spaniels). They live in an amazing old house in Bakewell with a beautiful garden. It was lovely to see them again and they welcomed ... read more

Day 1 of the Pennine Way beats quite a few walkers, we may have met one of them. It’s a difficult and long day. Any day with a section named Jacob’s Ladder is going to be tough. If it was called Jacob’s Incline even that would give walkers some hope without being misled. I’m waiting for sections with names like Rob’s Gentle Meander or Julie’s Easy Decreases in Elevation. I’m waiting but not expecting. It blew incessantly today and we were lucky it only rained briefly as it could have been bitter. We both walked in shorts (not the same pair) and for a while in t-shirts but the wind got the better of us. I didn’t stop blowing until we managed to get off the high plains. The plain is named Bleaklow and you don’t ... read more

It’s the day before tomorrow so we went for a walk! Up over Mam Tor, around the escarpment and down into Castleton and back home. On my pedometer about 2560 steps, on Julie’s about 28000 which translates to about 18 km. Considering tomorrow’s walk is 31 km today’s should be regarded as little more than the amuse bouchée of the buffet that awaits. I met a couple that had just completed the Pennine Way and had walked it north to south which is very unusual. They were full of praise for the walk although they did have a couple of scary stories. Additionally there is a couple staying here commencing the walk tomorrow named Rob and Lesliegh. Scary but true. One couple looking a little bedraggled and a little tired but pleased and relieved and savouring ... read more

We had a relatively early start today as we have a lunch appointment in Derby. After a great light breakfast we were winding our way through the countryside. Today we are meeting up with Pam, a friend of George´s who we have not seen since we moved to Tenerife. She has had a lot going on in her life during that time and it is great catch up with it all. Lunch today was at the local Toby Carvery. Food was great as expected. Was very busy though as today is Easter Sunday here in UK. After a quick cup of coffee at Pam´s we were back on the road again. Our hotel for tonight is the Best Western in Appleby Magma near Derby. It is right near the M42 ready for our journey further south ... read more

Hello Blog. It has been a long time. I have not forgotten you. It is just time is flying by and I feel I have done nothing. No trips out since our walk around Linacre Lakes. The weather has been particularly springlike so why are we not on the road? Christmas disappeared in a haze best forgotten. The advertisements began to tell me I should buy in the New Year sales . The holiday companies started to bombard me with offers I could not refuse. Still we sat here without a house to move to and without our sale going through. Each phone call suggested that things were fine and were moving along . Our buyers buyers had for some reason asked three questions which required answers. No problem that would be sorted out quickly and ... read more
