40 days and 40 nights - sounds Biblical. 40 days and 40 nights until we head off for sunnier climes and the last holiday of the year. The weather has been Biblical - another hurricane has hit the United States causing devastation to Texas. We have swerved and careered through a hot bank holiday weekend. That must be a first as most bank holidays have changeable weather . The weather is either hot and muggy or we have heavy rain which fills our water butts. The leaves on the trees are looking like burnished gold when they are bathed in the soft golden light of evening. Soon they will crinkle and drop off . Autiumn is coming. I sound like an advertisement for Game of Thrones. Winter is coming. We have so much to do to ... read more

Not exactly in the Hope Valley but we are pretty close. Actually we're in Great Hucklow but only those in Little Hucklow know where Great Hucklow is. Why it's great is still a bit of a secret but as I sit in the beer garden of the Queen Anne and have a couple of ciders and chat with the locals it is getting better and better. The fact that everything just goes on the tab is a little deceptive and makes it appear that drinks and meals are free here. We haven't paid for anything for 2 days here! The shock will come as I sober up tomorrow! The locals are delightful here and even better I can still understand them! We are actually staying in an old pub. It's been an inn since the 1600‘s ... read more

D - D minus 45 - I find myself trying to find different ways of counting time down to our next trip. I have tried one more swimming payment. So many more weekends or weekdays. I have not yet resorted to counting each minute down . That comes in a few weeks. We thought about the first part of our trip. We are heading off early on the Friday morning so we could change the train the next day from a lunchtime departure to an early morning one. A quick phone call to the tunnel and a chat with a lovely helpful adviser and £8 paid over and we are booked on the 8.30 train. The next job was to book an overnight camper stop. Black Horse Farm is handy . Most people use it as ... read more

D Day Minus 60 . Where in the world is Suzy the motorhome?. She is still sitting on the drive. She hasn't come out with us to day as we plan our trip from Chesterfield to Melbourne. Melbourne in Derbyshire that is. Not the one half way round the world. We needed to get out . Two months before our next holidays seem a long to wait. We don't want to travel far. We just want to find somewhere on the doorstep to break the monotony of early morning swims, of visits to the gym, of the grind of weekly shopping and to escape the summer weather. Sion of course wonders why we are not packing bags with clothes and I try to explain Melbourne in Derbyshire not Melbourne in Australia . I failed miserably and ... read more

Looking at the hands on the clock I wonder why time goes so slowly when I am bored or it goes quickly when I am enjoying myself. It is now D - Day minus 70 days and I find the butterflies are on the up again as we try to plan for the September/October trip. Suzy is in need of another clean. I find myself inside opening the first of her cupboards. It is the electric cupboard or at least that is what we affectionately call it. It is full of electrics that keep Suzy working. Electric boxes that are Suzys brain. Boxes of cables that are necessary for everyday life when we are on holiday. I look at the curtains and think that it would not go amiss to have them dry cleaned. I take ... read more

We were invited to join the annual May bank holiday weekend trip to Derbyshire. A 20 year family tradition of walking and getting together. The weather remained cool and cloudy for the weekend with only a light rain for our last quick walk on Monday morning. We stayed at a lovely cosy cottage on the main street and did a number of walks with the family. We enjoyed dinner at the The Farmyard Inn and the next evening all squeezed in to the cottage for a takeaway Chinese meal. A great experience.... read more

When I was younger I used to think that time passed by slowly. I remember as a child being told not to waste my time but thought nothing of frittering away a whole 24 hours doing nothing but stay in bed all day and sleep through the night. I must have wasted hour after hour as a teenager doing nothing more than sit around. My mum and gran used to advise me that Time waits for no man. Well at the time I thought it waited for me. How wrong can you be? Where has this year gone to? In January Christmas seemed like a dim and distant dream. I kept flexi at work so that if the snow came and the roads were blocked I could use it to stay at home. The snow didn't ... read more

A Chinese blessing recalls that "round the table peace and joy prevail. May all who share this seasons delight enjoy countless more". A particularly apt blessing for this time of year. We have been round the table, eating turkey with all the trimmings. Christmas pudding and crackers. The Christmas tree has been put up, decorated and taken down just before Twelfth Night. The Christmas cards have arrived, been inwardly digested and now fed up with all the glitter on the floor which falls from them they are reglegated to the recycling bin. Christmas has passed by for another year. The advertisements on the tv have invited us to order a new suite for Christmas delivery , 0% finance and if we did not want that we could try ordering one for Boxing Day with nothing to ... read more

Happiness is all in the mind - hold that thought. Our girl is back. Last week we had to drive over to Nottinghamshire to pick her up. The journey was as always interesting as our two sat nags contradict each other on which is the best way to get to Gunthorpe. One suggests one road and the other wails that there is a better way. Human instinct is such that the thoughts go through our minds to throw them both out of the window and get back to the tried and trusted method of using a map. We arrive and are invited to go and check Suzy over. If we are happy with the work we can sign the warranty claim and take the old girl home. However , how can you check a repair which ... read more

Autumn. One by one the petals drop There's nothing that can make them stop. You cannot beg a rose to stay. Why does it have to be that way? The words of a poem that sums up Autumn. One by one the leaves have been turning to burnished gold, plum and crimson, buttermilk to bronze. Then they fall like confetti or snow falling onto the pavements . Crisp and crinkling under foot they invite a toe to poke through them. A foot to kick them and for a hand to scrabble to find a conker or acorn hidden deep within them. The mists roll in and set the scene. The spiders weave their silken threads from the last die hard fuschia to the branches of the Cotoneaster covered in bright red berries . The berries invite ... read more
