Day 1 of the Pennine Way beats quite a few walkers, we may have met one of them. It’s a difficult and long day. Any day with a section named Jacob’s Ladder is going to be tough. If it was called Jacob’s Incline even that would give walkers some hope without being misled. I’m waiting for sections with names like Rob’s Gentle Meander or Julie’s Easy Decreases in Elevation. I’m waiting but not expecting. It blew incessantly today and we were lucky it only rained briefly as it could have been bitter. We both walked in shorts (not the same pair) and for a while in t-shirts but the wind got the better of us. I didn’t stop blowing until we managed to get off the high plains. The plain is named Bleaklow and you don’t ... read more

Motor homing is all about making plans. Sticking to them. Changing them. It is all about spending the cold dark winter months reading other peoples blogs. Following their travels , earmarking places to visit and campsites to stay at. With almost two thirds of our year taken up with illnesses and a broken fly screen on Gabby most of our travelling has been in our minds. There has been a void between what we wanted to achieve and what we actually achieved. April and the French holiday passed us by. Planned trips around the U.K never materialised. Even when thought we would get away we were tied up waiting for probate and oaths to be signed at the solicitors offices. We were trapped waiting for valuers and now waiting for someone to want to buy Glenns ... read more

The gale force wind cut through my five layers of clothing causing an involuntary shiver. The continuous rain over the last 15 hours had long ago penetrated my waterproof jacket and had soaked through the other four layers adding a chill factor that was becoming dangerous. I was at least 10 miles from the nearest checkpoint and in these conditions and over this terrain that was at least another 2.5 hours. I had been coping with the cold up until now; running had been keeping my core temperature up but as the wind had picked up and my running speed slowed down I was struggling to keep warm. My body was transferring blood from my legs to my central organs to keep them warm but this slows down my running pace which lowers my core temperature. ... read more

Staying on the backroads, I zig-zagged my way north through the Peak District. Apparently, the Peak District isn’t named for its terrain but for its former inhabitants, the Picts. The last time I passed this way, it had been pouring rain so, it was nice to see it in a different light. Although the skies were threatening, there was no rain in the forecast. After being in Arabia, where the skies are eternally cloudless, it’s a bit of a welcome sight to see the ever changing skies of England. There’s something about the northern light and the effervescent skies that combine to create an swirling palette of colours. ... read more

Only 3 days left at work before the preparations begin for my bike ride. I'm a little nervous and a tad sad, I've worked here 9 years, so I'm leaving some friends I've had for a long time. There will be 2 days of partying at the weekend before I set off; straight through one of the most picturesque places in the world, my beloved Derbyshire. We're right on the edge of the peak district here in Glossop in the NW corner so heading SE I will be travelling the length of the county. Here are some tasters of what i've got to look forwards to.... read more

Two days to go and we've had two days of farewells with rellies in Oldham, Rochdale, Middleton and Glossop. Last night we had a little industrial heritage with a slap-up meal in the Boat and Horses by the Rochdale Canal, but no narrowboats to be seen. I'm reliably informed it was once a primary route for shifting coal, limestone, bricks and cotton. Nowadays it is a 'leisure facility' alongside the Manchester M60 ring road. Today we moved on to Glossop, gateway to the High Peak District though this may be contested by Chapel-en-le-Frith. ... read more
