The hike up Scafell Pike was insanely hard. I didn’t even imagine how draining this whole thing would be. I was okay at first because we had a nice level 3.5 mile walk from our hostel to the trailhead. I was snuffling a bit (I’ve had a slight cold since the 28th), but otherwise okay. Then we got to the uphill part: literally steep stone steps up the mountainside. With my broken arm, I don’t have a whole lot of balance, but I still managed okay. Then we get to fields of rocks. You can’t even see a path, just giant chunks of rock all over the hills like someone’s dropped a quarry on the mountain side. It was so hard and I was so tired. But since we were traveling through to our destination ... read more

Home stay weekend is a big part of the Butler "experience" here in the UK and Ireland according to Ruth, Cathy, and Katherine, the three women who run my program who are kinda like everyone's young chic mothers. As I mentioned before I got my assignment the second or third day I was here and my family seemed like they would be the exact opposite of everything I had written down on my description sheet. I realize I don't know exactly what I wrote down on that fateful day back at UConn sometime last fall but I never said anything about being religious or liking children, two major aspects of my English family's life. As the day came closer (last Friday) I got more nervous but felt reassured as everyone else in my program was basically ... read more

Today I got back from a fantastic Church retreat near the Lake District. I met a lot of nice people, learned a lot from speaker Pete Gaskell and the Bible, and witnessed some of the most breathtaking views I've seen yet. The rugged scenery is absolutely gorgeous - this is the reason I decided to study in northern England - and I'm so glad that I was able to see this country side my first weekend after classes :) I will be adding pictures bit by bit, because the internet I use in my flat limits how much I can upload to the internet. Some pictures show the land right beside our Christian Center we stayed at. The view from my room was amazing! Very English to say the least. :) The other pictures show our ... read more

Here are some pictures of me trying very hard not to get blown away - you wouldn't think from the photos that it's August! Charlie, Neil, and I stayed in Keswick, a little town in the North-West of the Lake District. We had some good weather: our walk up Skiddaw on Sunday was almost hot, but Monday and Tuesday brought some very local, but very heavy, showers. We could see the rainclouds moving across the fells towards us very quickly, which meant that I had a little bit of warning each time before I had to go back to hiding inside waterproof bags.... read more

Free day today. Many of us, including me, needed it, but some people planned extra hikes. I went to Keswick in a Range Rover driven by a professional chauffeur, Tom. He and his brother, John, are Londoners here for a holiday. John is a lift attendant at the House of Commons, although he once was a gas fitter. They are both over six feet tall, and are kind, earnest people. We met at the evening entertainment last evening, and they almost insisted on including me on their drive to Keswick, the nearest big town. There were lots of “hiking gear” shops in Keswick check out. I wanted some gaiters (£6.99 for nylon), which in another era would have been called spats, although these are much less elegant. They get attached to your boot lace and cover ... read more
