We closed up the house with Cas was feeling rather stressed by all the last minute things to do. Ed and Hat we're excited and filled with anticipation, so I kept them occupied. After two and a half years of being packed away we decided it was time to get out our trusty old trailer tent. The weather forecast for The Lake District was finally a good one. We were in high spirits as we hitched up and left home in glorious sunshine. By the time we were passing Lancaster on the M6 however, the blue sky had turned grey but at least it was still dry. We reached our favourite campsite just outside Keswick with no problems traffic wise. A miracle in school holiday time. As we pitched the tent the grey cloud turned to drizzle - this wasn't suppose to happen! But then again it is the Lakes where anything can happen. In no time we were snug and warm in the tent with the kettle on. ... read more

Our luck continues with the weather which is mainly mild and cloudy. Our legs must be getting stronger because we are no longer passed by 70 or more year-old joggers (fell runners?) as we plod uphill. Now those who pass us are much younger couples pushing strollers, and mountain bikers. Today we hiked to the summit of Latrigg and as we sat on a bench eating our tuna buns, we feasted on the view spread out before us of Keswick, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite lakes and the rolling green fells beyond. Even with cloud covering the tops of the hills, it was beautiful. As we circled our way back down to the fields that cut across to where we are staying we had to stop to watch a farmer and his partner on a quad bike, trying ... read more

Believe it or not, Great Cockup is the name of the fell we hiked up today. So far the weather has dictated hiking on alternate (dry) days, which works well for me as I've done very little walking so far this year. Despite my lack of 'training', the biggest problem is following the directions in our guide book which are open to various interpretations. First of all today we had to figure out that Horsemoor Hills appears to consist of one farm. Next, the green path we were to take that slanted to the left read as though it came after Dash Falls when in fact it came before and the signpost was only a post lacking a sign. Other questions arose such as exactly which broad grassy break in the heather was the correct one ... read more

We've had an incredibly lovely September day for our first day in the Lake District and we spent it at the Borrowdale Sheepdog Trials watching shepherds and their dogs round up sheep, separate one from the group, herd the group into a pen, and more. Some of the younger dogs were a bit too eager and let one sheep get away, or couldn't herd the group into the pen within the time limit. The more experienced dogs were a bit more relaxed about it and performed beautifully. The Herdwick sheep are sturdy, hardy, and the only breed able to withstand winter conditions out on the fells. Lambs are black when born and become lighter as they age. The fleece is dense, dries quickly, and has two layers of hair: an outer layer of hollow hairs that ... read more

Yesterday we got the train to Penrith and said goodbye to Mum then we got the bus to Keswick and walked half way up Skiddaw to Skiddaw bunkhouse. When we got to the youth hostel there was another girl who was 9 called Elsa. We played lots of great games. I took a picture of her - see below Today we walked up Skiddaw and almost literally got blown away but we didn't get any views because it was so foggy. Then we came down and went to Keswick youth hostel and went to get supper from the street market and came back to cook it. I will write more on Saturday.... read more
