Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

It is my last week at work and I can not believe how time flies. I am already starting my goodbyes which is pretty sad. I will miss all my friends and family over the next 6 months and no matter how adventurous you are, you are bound to feel homesick at some point. However, with these goodbyes, I am also looking forward big 'hellos!!' as I am seeing two of my bestmates who are currently in Australia. Very excited about these reunions! One of them is married in Brisbane and the other is going to be my new travelling buddy [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone, just checking up on my blog site as I'll be off on my travels again in a couple of months and wanted to check who would like to stay on the list for blog updates. This trip is 3 months in India so the potential for some hair-raising adventures is pretty high!! Let me know if you're up for sharing the ups (and hopefully few and far between, downs) of the trip and I'll make sure your name is on the list, because if it isn't then you know the rules - you ain't coming in... Hi everyone I am now in Bristol. The bunfight was a great success on Saturday apart from the fact that Abbots Leigh has no mobile signal which was very frustrating as we couldn't use our dongles. I leave tomorrow morning on the 7.45 coach to Heathrow Terminal 5. Best wishes to you all. Liz [View Full Entry]

So the end of part 1 and we're back in the UK. We land to wind, rain and grey skies ... good 'ol Blighty never fails to give a warm welcome. Last day in BA was spent at by far the grandest cemetery I have ever seen, row upon row of two storey marble tombs for the great and good of Argentinian life. Finished off with an evening at the tango hall .... superb show. Specifically for Pete ... to your New York barmaids perfect stomach I can now add an exquisitely toned back, the one in the middle in the [View Full Entry]

Dale and I went on a lovely weekend away to Bristol, timing had it that we were there for the annual Hot air balloon festival. During the day there were the Red Arrow jet planes conducting aerobatic tricks right over our heads. Dale and I sat in the beer tent enjoying the hot, hot sun we cheered when we heard there were two kiwis flying in the team of nine. On the city bus tour we went for a drive up the Clifton Suspension Bridge over the Avon Gorge I was so surprised to learn that back in the olden days [View Full Entry]

Alcohol aids appreciation of art . We queued for 3 hours with a couple of cans of local cider - it seemed appropriate as Bristol is the home of scrumpy and Bristol is the home of everyones favourite street artist, Banksy. In the queue, his name was in the air like tropical mosquitos- 'Banksy...buzzbuzzbuzz... Banksy...buzzbuzz... Banksy' The waiting crowd - teenage students with backpacks, little kids in raincoats, mums and dads on day-trips - were all hissing the name and asking who he was, chatting about what the images meant, relaying what they had read in the paper about Him. A digital slice of our own

so here are more pictures from Scotland. From Stirling I when to Pitlochry and spent a few days there, which is about 15 miles from Glen(valley) Lyon and River Lyon. I was able to see the river but the Glen was to far and the bus didn't go that far and I was pressed for time. I had to load the pictures twice so I don't have time to give a lot of commentary. more to come cheers. [View Full Entry]
