I took the bus to Przemsyl (pronouced 'shamish'), which is 10 kms from Ukraine border. Then I took bus to cross into Ukraine and come to Lviv (Polish pronouce it 'leVolf') It was an adventure, the bus ride and three hour wait at the border. When we got to Lviv the bus station was in the suburbs. Luckily there was a minibus that takes people into the city, 7 kms of busy traffic. Lviv is suppose to be the new Prague. I've not been there, but have seen enough views in hollywood movies. Lviv did not have the wow factor that Krakow had for me. Today was sunny, so I took lots of photos. Judge for yourself. Tomorrow I'm off to find the lion statue; 'Lviv' means lion castle. Also, I've got to find the nearby ... read more

When we got on the train I needed to pee badly but the restrooms dont open until we are out of the city. It was a beautiful train, neat and lots of space, we were minding our own business when all of a sudden a middle aged woman came to us and offered us plums then vodka and a few other things! She is part of a group of people from the tax department in Kiev and travelling to some town for a football match, they already had a few drinks and she wants to talk to the "foreigners", she is so funny, a few others in the train got involved, well those who speak English, this is the kind of experience I was looking for that I only read on the LP. Luda the old lady ... read more

Hello!!! In L'viv now waiting for a train to Kiev. It's about midday here and train is not until 8pm. We left Krakow 2 days ago now. Missed the train we had booked on after a mix up involving me and Adelle getting a bit lost when we split up whilst Nance went and bought new luggage. At the time for some reason it was really demoralising. I felt worse than when we lost the car and when we couldn't find anywhere to stay in Slovakia. I think it was because this time it was in our control. Still, in the end it didnt matter, got a train only half hour later. However, this would now involve changing over near the Ukrainian border. We stopped in a small Polish town called Pryzemysl. Nothing here, bit of ... read more

Our train to Uzgorod (from there 4 km to the Slovak border) is going in 1 and half hours. We are at the train station, there are pc's and internet "round the clock" so no problem :) I even played counterstrike with the ukrainian teenagers :) In general, ukrainian train stations and their facilities are on far higher level than those in Slovakia. There are also several big LCD screens, so people can watch movies. So in couple of hours we should be back in Slovakia, but before we have to do some shopping in Uzgorod. Marlboro cigarettes for our friends (20 pack for 0.80 euro :). And vodka for ourselves.... read more

Having managed to enjoy the dramatic Romania scenery, see more castles than you could poke a stick at and have my photo taken with Dracula (I paid 10c for the privilege), the closest I came to vampires were the bedbugs that gave me little bitey track-marks. Short of rubbing myself with garlic (sexy) or whittling 1000 little stakes - I moved hostel. But eventually the green pine-covered mountains and the stories of the backpackers who, failing to find the danger and adventure they were hoping for made up stories about wolves and bears, became too much for me, and I decided to go to Moldova. The only reference I had to Moldova was Tony Hawks 'Playing the Moldovans at Tennis' - and the 2 factsI could remember were that it was dangerous to walk around at ... read more

*zweet* Alard. ... read more

Omkoping? Vriendendienst? We zullen het nooit weten :) De stad Uzhhorod ligt ongeveer tegen de ... read more

Hello All, Despite the ups and downs of our Eastern European Road trip, we decided that we still should give it another shot. We hopped on a night train (the nicest night train that we have been on so far), and headed off to Ukraine. When we boarded the train, we ran into 6 Edmontonians who were on a 6 week study trip (essentially and extended vacation with 9 hours of class a week and excursions on Tuesdays and Thursdays) to Lviv, the city that we were going to. They all had Ukrainian parents, and all were fluent in both English and Ukrainian. We talked for a while and yes, we did give them grief about being Oiler fans! On each night train, there are compartments with three beds in each one. We had a friendly ... read more

One of the pleasantest things in the world is going on a journey. We take a bus to the train station and then a train to the Airport, we are travelling light. We both have a rucksack each and the buggy with Lisa in. No big suitcase this time. We are arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare, we drink a coffee while we are waiting for check and we find out that the morning flight to Prague had been cancelled due to bad weather. We commiserate with the people who were suppose to on that flight and now are rebooked on this one, I tell them that last time we flew to Prague the same thing happened to us and we had to be rebooked on the later flight and it ... read more
