It was our first free weekend to travel anywhere in Europe we wanted. So six of us girls packed our bags and headed off to Switzerland. It was perhaps the best first trip one could ever take because it taught us so many truths about backpacking through Europe. The most important being that the only thing you can really count on is things never going as planned. Gaming, Austria (where I live) is like no other place in the world. Basically, since the town is so small and there aren’t accessible means of public transportation, hitchhiking is an acceptable thing to do. It’s fast, effective and saves us from having to walk 45 minutes to the train station with our monstrous backpacks on our backs. Four of the six of us hitchhiked down to the train ... read more

(Posted October 18 by Kim) We totally enjoyed sleeping in on our second day in Interlaken. We got up and decided to try and go sailing before taking the train back to Zurich that evening, but the sailing place was already booked up for the day. The weather was very cloudy and cold, so we decided para gliding wouldn’t be very fun either. We decided to just take the ferry boat to the end of one of the lakes instead and then either ride it back or we could take the train from there. It was a great way to just see the lake and the mountains! The water was so blue in the lake and the river in Interlaken that we joked about it being dyed blue, like the treated toilet bowl water. The water ... read more

(Posted on October 16 by Kim) After Venice we headed to Interlaken via a night train to Zurich. My friend Jesi had highly recommended Interlaken as a fun outdoor adventure place for both Joe and I. We had thought we would do something crazy like ice climbing, but by this time in the trip we were both exhausted, out of clean clothes, and tired of spending money. Our lodging was very reasonably priced in Interlaken, but the food was very expensive. When we finally decided on a lunch place in Interlaken, Joe decided he might as well go all out and ordered a steak. Plus, we’d been eating lots of pasta in Italy, and many of the pasta dishes had no meat or much smaller amounts than what we were used to. The steak was pretty ... read more

hey everyone!! i'm finally able to update. i tried in italy twice. the first time, the page wouldn't load and the second time it wouldn't recognize the @ sign on the foreign keyboard. but, i am staying at a hostel that has a US keyboard. my back hurts from carrying my pack, which we decided to name (my packs name is jerome) since they were the weight of midgets. i have blisters on my feet, bug bites EVERYWHERE, and sunburn, but i couldn't be having more fun!! so...so much has happened since i left a little less than a week ago. because sarah (the friend i am traveling with) and i are crazy, we decided as soon as we landed at rome that we were going to take a train directly down to naples so we ... read more

We're on our way home and I've only got 8 minutes of internet left. We got very wet in St Gallen, headed back over the alps to Lugano and Locarno - both very beautiful, everyone should go. Then north again to Interlaken where we had been planning to spend 6 days but were diverted by the floods. Two people died just along the lake from here, a massive mudslide came through the village in the night. The Swiss are cleaning up with impressive efficiency. We went up to the rotating restautrant where they filmed On Her majesty's Secret Service, fantastic views of the Jungfrau and Eiger, and went to an outdoor museum where they've rebuilt 100 old buildings from all over Switzerland in a lovely setting, called Ballenberg. I've got 13 more pictures to add but ... read more

Hey everyone! Its great hearing from everyone thanks for the messages and emails. This post wont have pictures bc we cant get to a computer that will let us plug in the cord but as soon as we do i will put up some pictures from Switzerland bc this place is amazing!! I have to write really quickly about our time in Venice. We had a great and relaxing time. We roomed with 2 other girls, one from Newcastle England and one from New Jersey. We basically hung out with them the entire time. The gondola rides were way too expensive for us but we were fine with just roaming around the city getting lost in all the side streets. The way the city is laid out with all of the canals and bridges is just ... read more

Interlaken, Switzerland August 6-9 Hostel; Balmers Herberge...One of Europes 15 most famous hostels We have officially been gone one month now! Sure doesnt seem like it! Anyways, now we are in Interlaken, Switzerland...which is the most opposite of flat Grand Forks you can get. By far the most prettiest and spendiest place we have stopped. For example, we found McDonlads to be the cheapest, which usually is not the case and for 2 meals there it was nearly 18 US dollars! Sooooo, that means we were no where near having the money to do adventure sports such as skydiving (300 USD), paragliding, (150 USD for 25 min.), hangliding, canyoning and such, but the trip is definatly not over yet, and maybe in Australia well re-visit the idea. Things were so expensive it honestly made us laugh, ... read more

arrived here last night to a very picturesque area. our campsite is in a valley with towering mountains and waterfalls right next to us. of course, it's gorgeous. nice was good. went to the movies with kate the first night. saw charlie and the chocolate factory with johnny depp. it was awesome. a fantastic remake and they did it really well. johnny depp is really good in it. an amazing actor. saturday we went on a tour and a boat cruise to and around saint tropez. how cool are we. it was amazing day. went to another beach on the riviera (can't remember the name) then onto the cruise looking for famous people. didn't see anyone though. we had dinner (sandwiches on a park bench with all the rich people walking past and looking at us ... read more

well maybe not, but pretty high up in the mountains in switzerland. I feel like i've died and gone to Yosemite. As i step outside, there's this huge mountain in front of me. So large it looks fake. The air is clean, the water is pure, and scene is relaxing. I also went to Geneva and Zurich. Nice places but really expensive. Switzerland to me is the Simi Valley of Europe. Safe, clean, but there aint s*** to do. I forgot last time to mention how the Running of the Bulls was. Or maybe how i like to call it, Jogging of the Bulls, because it seemed thats all they were doing until they got to the collisseum. I heard some stories of guys getting trampled, one of em told me about it in Ibiza, crazy. ... read more

Pictures are forthcoming of one of the most beautiful places in the world. Interlaken, Switzerland surrounds you in mountains like no other place Ive seen before. Me and Jen spent 3 days at a hostel named Funny Farm where we relaxed at night by the bar meeting people. We river rafted down the river that extends from the glaciers down through the valley, and eventually winding up in one of the lakes next to Interlaken. The views were awesome. The next day we bought a camera and rented scooters and drove up the valley to Stechelberg where we took a gondola to Gimmelwald, a small mountain village where goats outnumber people. Leaving Interlaken we headed to Geneva the next day. We lucked out finding a hostel that wasnt full booked and walked around the city. Genevas ... read more
