Saturday we had a good day. We went to a Christmas market that was happening in a nearby town called Russin. There were a lot of trinkets to buy of course. Avery tried some hot wine and liked it. We tried roasted chestnuts, but weren't too fond of them. We did end up buying some local meat. We are going to try our first Swiss sausage sometime this week. That was about all of the excitement from this week. I don't even have any pictures to share! Other than that, I was as sick as a dog Wednesday, and Thursday last week. Of course, me being the bone head that I am, still go into to work. I had the shakes, I had a fever, I was light-headed, my nose was running and to top it ... read more

Well, it is the second last week of November. I do not know where the time goes. It just always seems to fly by. These days, I am feeling quite busy. I have my report cards to finish up, marking to finish, parent/teacher interviews are forthcoming, I will be going to a camp for one week with my class in mid-December and I have to get my class ready for story-telling evening that we are having December 20th. I have to say that I have found some solace in the theme song of Fraggle Rock. Part of it goes as follows, "Dance your cares away, worries for another day . . ." I will let tomorrow worry about itself, each day has enough worries of its own. Anyways, this past week was a good one. One ... read more

Well, time seems to continue marching along. I can't believe how fast it is going. Next week report cards go home and I start doing parent/teacher interviews. Over the weekend, we made a great discovery. We found a swimming pool/water park that was kid friendly. The other pools that we have been to in Switzerland and France have been strictly pools for swimming. No fun and games for the little ones. So, Saturday, we went to Vitam Parc where there were tons of things for Isabelle and Myles to do. The only problem, we kind of got lost getting there. The upside of that is that Myles fell asleep, so he was able to have a long nap because we were a bit lost. I forgot to mention last time that Myles has been saying, "Oh, ... read more

Well, I enjoyed my first week back after our vacation to Paris. I can't believe that it is already November and that I have been teaching for nine weeks. Time flies when you're having fun. We celebrated Halloween with Myles and Isabelle last Monday night. We dressed them up and then had then go outside of the apartment. We then told them to knock on our door and say trick or treat. We opened our door and gave them a treat. They loved doing that. We did this because we didn't think that they celebrated Halloween in Avully/Chancy. However, I learned from my students that some of them were actually going out, dressed up, to collect some candy. I told them that the deal was that they had to share half of their candy with their ... read more

Well, it has been a long time since I updated my blog, but Avery and I had the chance to go to Paris for the week - without the kids. My parents stayed at the apartment and watched the kids for the week. It was great to go on a holiday, just the two of us. You will understand the title of the blog shortly. We arrived in Paris around 6 pm Saturday, October 22. We were able to find a small apartment for the week. I mean small. But it was a nice and cozy place. Anyways, in our apartment, we had pink toilet paper, there was no shower curtain, we found a moldy coffee filter and walking around Saturday evening, we quickly discovered why Paris is called the City of Love. The were people ... read more

This weekend was a busy, yet enjoyable weekend. Both of my parents flew in on Friday. My dad came from home and my mom came from her travels in Estonia and Latvia. It was good to see them and now I don't have to walk around with one eye closed. I got my contacts for my left eye! Anyways, my dad flew in Friday morning at 10:10 am and my mom flew in Friday night around 6:00 pm. We had some good catching up time and then Denis came over around 9:45 pm. It was good to spend some more time with him. He left around midnight. Now, I am not normally a night person, so I have to admit that we went to bed early Saturday night. Saturday, we decided that we would go with ... read more

I wrote the title for this blog because this is one of the lines that one of my colleagues says to me fairly frequently. Well, I guess that my hiding in Geneva is over. We all had to go the cantonal office of Geneva last Wednesday because we all needed resident cards. They finally figured out that I was in the country. Anyways, all foreigners need these resident cards. We got there when it opened at 7:30 am and went through the paperwork and got our pictures taken all pretty flawlessly. After this, I went to my school to get some work done. Olivier, the other half of the masculine team at our school, asked me how the morning went at the cantonal office. I told him that it was fine, except that the price was ... read more

One little tradition that we have adopted over here is to say one thing that we are thankful for at supper time. Afterwards, for a little prayer, we sing Johnny Appleseed. This little tradition proved to be useful tonight. This morning, on my bike ride to school, the fog was as bad as it's been since we arrived. Nonetheless, I felt confident on my ride to school because of the purchases that I had made last Wednesday. I had the lights on the bike, I was wearing my helmet and I was wearing my bright yellow reflective vest. Everything was fine until I arrived in Chancy and had to deal with the morning rush hour. In Chancy, I was nearing the little grocery store and noticed that the bus K had stopped to pick up some ... read more

Well my mom flew into Geneva yesterday. It was good to see her. And most importantly, she was able to bring Isabelle her Dora sunglasses. Isabelle has been waiting patiently for her special sunglasses. The sunglasses were not the only things that mom brought. It almost felt like Christmas. She also brought some Aunt Jemima syrup, some Kraft Peanut Butter, a new blade for my hockey stick, some toothpaste for the kids and a huge bag of chocolate chips, among other things. Why the chocolate chips you ask? Well, if you want to make chocolate chip cookies here, the only packages that you can buy are used up for one batch of cookies. Not many people bake here. Anyways, another thing that mom brought was some contacts that I had shipped to my parents house. Mom ... read more

We had a great weekend! We drove to Charmey to see the Désalpe. This is where the cows come down from grazing in the Alps over the summer wearing the big bells around their necks. It was a neat thing to see, with the farmers/herdsmen dressed in traditional clothing. It was a little noisy though. The kids loved seeing the cows and they even brought goats down as well, all decorated with their own little bells. The goats seemed to be a little confused about what to do. They were always veering to the left and to the right. After the Désalpe, we headed to Bulle to find our hotel for the night. However, we were not the only people that wanted to see the Désalpe, so we drove the 10 km to Bulle at a ... read more
