Here we are in Geneva, Switzerland. It was a really nice train ride from Munich. It was scenic cutting through the woods, around the mountains, and then along side Lake Geneva! We are only here for one night so we are going to enjoy some fondue before we leave in the morning for Zermatt. We're going to hike the Matterhorn! Hopefully there won't be snow THERE. We didn't bring a ton of warm clothes and we saw quite a bit of snow today. I didn't blog at all in Germany because we were having too much fun eating pretzels and trying German beers. Made some great German friends who shared some interesting thoughts with us. And guess what? They actually know that there are more states in the U.S. than just California and New York! Once we finally arrived in Geneva we were tired and not in the mood for much exploration. We did however find a post office and few of you lucky people may just be getting a postcard in the mail. After that we walked through the town, window shopping at local chocolate shops. We ended up at the marina of Lake Geneva with gorgeous boats and mountains in the background. With dark clouds in the midst, we headed home but not without some chocolate for our sweet tooth. Switzerland has 4 official languages and I was very interested to see which one was their dominate language. To my surprise the majority of people speek French on a regular basis, but know other languages. I am glad we only spent a half of a day there because the ... read more

Well, vacation time is almost here. One more day of school and then we will be driving to Holland and then to Germany. I am looking forward to my time off. I can't believe that it is already April. Last week, I had my last hockey practice. I was a little sad because I love playing hockey, but it will be nice not to have to drive 30 minutes each way and it will be nice to get some more sleep. That hockey season went fast. Last week, we were getting ready for the "Troc de printemps." This is a glorified garage sale that was put on by the parents' association in the town of Bernex, just outside of Geneva. We put some of our items in the sale. We were just wanting to get rid ... read more

A couple updates in one since I'm kind of behind here... Monday February 27-March 2 – Nyon It’s definitely spring in Geneva! At least for this week. It has been gorgeous and sunny and warm! I walked home today in a t-shirt and then sat on the patio in the sun to do my readings without a jacket on! Bad for the skiing situation in the mountains though… On Tuesday my French class was canceled so I wandered down through Nyon to the lake and walked along it for a ways. There are a number of cute little restaurants and old buildings and a great view of the chateau. Then I found a nice little bench and did my French homework in the sun looking at Mont Blanc and the Alps. Quite lovely! Skiing in Chamonix ... read more

Well - what a great weekend! We left right after school Friday and we drove to Interlaken. The reason for our trip to Interlaken - to see the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains. To do this, we needed to take trains up the Alps to the "Top of Europe," as it is called once you make it up to 3454 meters. This is Europe's highest railway station. I love the mountains. The main reason that I wanted to see these mountains is because I saw a documentary on the plane ride over about the north wall(face) of the Eiger. The Eiger is 3970 meters above sea level and since 1935, at least 64 climbers have died trying to climb the north face of the Eiger. We, however, got to take the easy way up - on ... read more

Well, after a cold snap in February, the weather has sure been nice in March. By the weekend, it will get up around 20 degrees Celcius. I have been sweating in my classroom, that usually doesn't happen until June in St. Albert. Hopefully I won't stink the students out too bad. Time has been flying by - as usual. I can't believe that we are in the last trimester of school. I have finished the second round of report cards and we are on the home stretch. Thanks to Denis having a Toyota, we were able to go to Geneva's 82nd International Car Show. It was neat to be able to go and see a bunch of nice cars. The only problem - there were people everywhere. It was hard to get through the crowd at ... read more

Well, it has been a week and a half back at work since our little Rome escapade. We haven't done too much since being back from Rome. We had to take Denis' car in for the routine service and oil change. In turn, they supplied us with a 1989 Toyota Starlet. It was lipstick red. It made be think of my dad's old Toyota Tercel that had 470 thousand kilometers on it (or so). The funny thing about this Starlet was that there was only 135 thousand kilometers on it. It should be good for another 25 years. Obviously, living in the Canton of Geneva, one wouldn't put near as many kilometers on a vehicle as in Canada. However, we did get a picture of that sweet car that we had for the day. Also, it ... read more

After being in Rome over the past week, I can definitely understand why Rome wasn't built in a day. While in the heart of Rome, I got the sense, that in terms of building things, it was either go big or go home. There were a lot of great things to see in Rome. We didn't have time to see everything, because of our time constraints and also for the fact that we were travelling with 2 small children. However, Isabelle and Myles were great travellers and we were able to do a lot while in Rome, even though we had to go back to the hotel each afternoon for Myles' nap. He gets snappy without his nappy! Day one - Trevi Fountain (26 meters high and 20 meters wide) - This was a huge fountain ... read more

I woke up this morning to Mont Blanc staring at me from my living room window! Finally. My host family has been telling me since I got here that you can see it from the house, but even on the sunny days there have been clouds over the Alps (good for snow I guess). This morning it was finally clear enough to see! In the afternoon we had our meeting about our Brussels and Paris trip and then had the rest of the afternoon off. Some of us decided to start getting on random trains and seeing where we ended up. We got off in the University of Geneva district and wandered around. We had been talking about how Geneva isn’t that interesting of a city – mostly just office buildings and such besides the Old ... read more
