Interlaken.
Hotel Goldey. Well - what a great weekend! We left right after school Friday and we drove to Interlaken. The reason for our trip to Interlaken - to see the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains. To do this, we needed to take trains up the Alps to the "Top of Europe," as it is called once you make it up to 3454 meters. This is Europe's highest railway station. I love the mountains. The main reason that I wanted to see these mountains is because I saw a documentary on the plane ride over about the north wall(face) of the Eiger. The Eiger is 3970 meters above sea level and since 1935, at least 64 climbers have died trying to climb the north face of the Eiger. We, however, got to take the easy way up - on the train. It was well worth the trip.
We found this trip as a package from the Jungfrau website. The package included our hotel, breakfast and supper, as well as the tickets to get up and see these 3 awesome peaks. We rolled into Interlaken at 7:00 pm Friday night and enjoyed a gourmet meal. We had tasty steaks. When they asked us how
Interlaken.
Hotel Goldey. we wanted our steaks, Avery replied medium/well and I replied well. The steaks came out looking great and when we cut into them, they looked quite rare. In fact, I heard a moo coming from my steak. If that was well done, I would like to see what rare looked like. All joking aside, we really loved eating at Hotel Goldey and not having to worry about preparing our own meals. I would say that the only downer for the whole weekend was 5:53 am and 5:41 am. Why these specific times? This is when Myles decided to wake up Saturday and Sunday morning.
Myles and Isabelle did great on the trip. They loved riding on the train. Myles could be heard repeatedly saying/chanting, "Choo-choo," and pumping his arm up and down. Then, when we got off the train he would say, "Mom, more choo-choo!" It was cute and Myles was as happy as a clam to be riding in the trains.
It was a long train journey. It started at 9:00 am and we didn't get to the top until 11:22 am. I was surprised with how well the kids did for such a long journey. Especially
considering that we were standing/sitting on the floor for the last 50 minutes of the trip. It was all worth it, as we got 3 free drink vouchers for our troubles. That was nice because a Coke and water were almost 6 Swiss Francs each.
There is nothing much to say about being at the "Top of Europe," except to say that it was breathtaking. I loved being that high up in the Alps and I didn't feel any effects of the altitude. I remember landing in Cusco, Peru in 2006 and feeling light-headed right away, due to the altitude of 3600 meters. I was feeling great and I wanted nothing more than to climb to the top of the Mönch, which was the closest peak to us. The problem, Isabelle fell asleep in the hiking backpack and I didn't want to be stranded there overnight.
I have to say that I was tired Saturday night from carrying the kids around in the backpack. At some points I was carrying an extra 60 pounds. I had Myles in the backpack and Isabelle wanted to be carried as well. Saturday night was filled with much anticipation, as I thought
to myself, "Myles should sleep in longer due to all of that fresh air." Boy, was I wrong. We didn't get any sort of sleep in. I think that when Myles is a teen, I am going to wake him up at 5:50 am just to give him a taste of his own medicine.
On the way home we stopped at a restaurant called, "The Buffalo Grill." This was an American restaurant with great food and it played country music for the whole 2 hours that we were there. There was a play area for the kids and they loved it! This restaurant is located on the autoroute and we have passed by it a number of times. Everytime I drove by it, I would say, "I would sure like to eat there one day." Well, I got my wish and I was more than satisfied. I ordered the country burger and it was - a heart attack on a plate. Man, was it good. The burger was not on a bun. Think of McDonald's hashbrowns on steroids. That is what the bun was. Two giant hashbrowns hugging a juicy burger.
I would have to say that this
was a great weekend. Needless to say, I didn't need to eat supper tonight. I need to let all of that food properly digest.
One last comment. We have gone fairly frequently to the Ludothèque in Lancy. This is a toy library. So instead of borrowing books, you can borrow toys. We bought a membership for our last four months here and we are sure glad that we did. The kids each got a bouncy animal and we got a two-seater tricycle. Isabelle pedals and Myles gets a free ride. We look forward to borrowing more toys for the kids.

No place quite like the Top of Europe
We took the train up to Jungfrau a few years ago and it's such a cherished memory - it was a beautiful day trip up and down. Thanks for sharing your experience - here is ours.. http://bit.ly/cFG6xq
