Europe » Italy » Sardinia » Alghero April 14th 2012

We made it to Sardinia! Thank goodness! Wasn't so sure we would, but I'll talk about that later...first, Florence! No Internet access there or Rome. Florence was great! We found a panini shop all the locals go to for cheap eats. And we went there a couple times : ) We saw the Duomo, a cathedral you can't miss because it is MASSIVE. Jo hustled a street salesman for a painting. We met anItalian man named Sirrenzo who may or may not be part of the mafia. But he taught us all about leather and sent us through his leather school. We climbed 1,001 steps to see the BEST view of the city, mountains, and rural area from Piazza Michelangelo. Unfortunately we didn't see a lot of Renaissance art because we had NO clue the lines ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice April 8th 2012

Happy Easter everyone! I have completely fallen in love with this country! They have the perfect combination of mountains and sea. The architecture, language and religion are all beautiful! We have been having a bit of a problem seeing the sights in Venice because anything we try to see we get lost, although we have stumbled on some sights by accident : ) I think that is actually how they get tourists to buy things. You wanderNAND wander, all the while shopping, untilyou give up and pay for a water taxi. I think I staeyed a monster in Jo. Who knew a purse fetish was contagious? We have smelled and pet a LOT of sweet smelling and soft leather purses throughout Venice! We took a gondola ride and our waiters have been helping us with our ... read more

Bonjourno, from Venice! Jo and I were in Zermatt, Switzerland on Thursday. It's the cutest little ski resort town! We took a tram up the mountain to get a better view of the Matterhorn. As we rose in elevation, there was snow, then more snow, then skiers in all thsnow gear got on, then more snow, then more ski eiders. By the time we got off the tram, there was more than a foot of snow all around us! We were trying to visit an igloo bar. Everyone we asked for directions said to walk down ten minutes. Well they didn't tell us there wasn't a walking path! We trampled across the slopes and I don't think the smokers were real happy about it... We jumped through snow up to our knees (in tennis shoes) to ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Geneva April 4th 2012

Here we are in Geneva, Switzerland. It was a really nice train ride from Munich. It was scenic cutting through the woods, around the mountains, and then along side Lake Geneva! We are only here for one night so we are going to enjoy some fondue before we leave in the morning for Zermatt. We're going to hike the Matterhorn! Hopefully there won't be snow THERE. We didn't bring a ton of warm clothes and we saw quite a bit of snow today. I didn't blog at all in Germany because we were having too much fun eating pretzels and trying German beers. Made some great German friends who shared some interesting thoughts with us. And guess what? They actually know that there are more states in the U.S. than just California and New York! I ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam March 31st 2012

Hallo! Spreekt u Engels? This morning we arrived to Amsterdam. After spending a lot of time in museums and palaces in Spain and France, we thought we had spent enough time being "cultured" and decided to learn a little about the cuisine...and their specialty drinks : ) Our last day in France we spent in Epernay (Champagne) touring the champagne processing plant and vinyard Mercier. And tasting...of course! Today, in the Amsterdam, we went to the Heineken brewery to learn about the beer making process, and had plenty of taste testing there, too! The canals and leaning houses are adorable, and the language is a blast to try and pick up! It's an odd mix of Spanish, German, and English. It's also refreshing to be outside of Southern Europe which leaned on the traditional, history-rich yet ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris » Sarcelles March 29th 2012

Bonjour from Paris! Jo and I arrived here two days ago via night train. We didn't sleep a ton because we made stops continuously throughout the night to pick up more passengers. Already with little sleep, we navigated the streets and bumped into feisty Parisians who at first left a bitter taste in my mouth (and not to mention the air with how much they smoke). We explored the islands of the Seine river, saw Notre Dame and St. Chapels. At night we drank a bottle of French wine and watched the Eiffel tower sparkle. On the way home we had to stop for a chocolate crepe : ) The following day we had a chocolate croissant for breakfast, walked through the gardens of Luxembourg, and trampled through the caves beneath the city that house the ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid » Madrid March 26th 2012

Today is our third and final day in Madrid. The morning of our first day here we toured the royal palace of Madrid and people watched in a buzzing plaza. There are musicians, human statues, and all kinds of entertainersto see! My favorite was listening to a man musically play on kitchen pots while watching a group of boys perform soccer tricks outside the national theater. This truly is the city that never sleeps! We went on a pub crawl and at 4am the city streets are as packed as 4 in the afternoon!! (No worries: we were out with our hostel's hype girl/guide). We had a blast crawling with some people we met from New York, Canada, Argentina and Spain- who helped me with my Spanish, too. We covered our bases and tried Spanish sangria, ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona » Barcelona March 23rd 2012

So today, Jo and I found our way from the first flight to our second flight leaving Frankfurt for Barcelona. I spoke a little broken Spanish and managed to get us on a bus from the airport to the city center where we tracked down our amazing hostel! We are rooming with a couple other people from western Europe and one from Saudi Arabia, who are all traveling by themselves. We explored the city by foot and metro, had a unique Spanish lunch of tapas, and enjoyed Parque Guell (a Dr Seuss-like community) built and inspired by artist Guardi. We had to return to the room to cover up tank tops we wore for warmer weather during the sunny day, and put on sweatshirts and windbreakers to venture out for a beer--Spain´s Estrella Damm. Did some ... read more
