So today was a free day for us. It seems like I’m fighting a little bit of a cold right now. Or maybe it’s just allergies. I had planned on trying to go paragliding today, but the weather was too bad to go. So we went to Plan B. One of the hotels in Engelberg had a very nice Spa and Arabella helped set up appointments for me, Stefanie, Janet, and Jamie. We decided to meet at 1:15 to walk up together even though all of our appointments were at different times. Until then Stef and I walked around Engelberg. She wanted to get an angel figurine for her sister. We ate at this little Café and I tried Lindon Berry tea. It was interesting because they put the plant, crushed up, into a little strainer ... read more

Today was our first full free day. I did sleep in a little bit. Vanessa, Elizabeth, Ryan and I took the 11:45am train to Luzern. This was my 1st train ride! After we arrived in Luzern we had lunch at a place called Cafeteria Emilio. It was a cute, two-story cafe that served hamburgers, sandwhiches, and some pastas. It was quite delicious! Vanessa and I both ordered the "Chickenburger w/ Salad". We then went to the souvinier shop just across the street and all bought some gifts. We walked from shop to shop looking for "original dresses". We sort of gave up after about five shops and decided to stop in to Starbucks. While at the coffee shop we had the best chocolate cake ever. It was called Chocolate Truffel Cake, and it was to die ... read more

Today was our first free day, and Elizabeth, Vanessa, Ashley and I took the opportunity to take the train to Lucerne. In Lucerne we did some souvenir shopping and ate at a local café. Right before leaving, the girls found a store they loved and each spent a minimum of $100 dollars on clothing. After shopping, we walked back to the train station and caught our ride back home. While we really didn’t do too much today, I think it was definitely a huge step for all of us to take. What I mean by this is that if you would have told me, before the trip, that I would take a train with four of the other students to a large city, and we would be let loose on our own, I would probably have ... read more

This was our free day today. I decided to sleep in today and it was great!! After eating breakfast, I got dressed and Catherine, Nate, and I went walking around. We walked along the river that runs through the city. It was really interesting because we saw lots of snails and slugs around the trail. They were huge! We haven't seen anything like this in Texas. After wondering around town, we got hungry and stopped at this restaurant called "Rosti-Hauseinwaldli". This seems like a nice local place to eat dinner. We walked in there was this big dog sitting there in the doorway. That was really weird. The lady did not speak any English so that made everything really difficult. She passed out some menus that had some English on it. Me and Catherine decided to ... read more

Today we visited the Mount Titlis ski resort. Peter informed us that in 1120 it was founded by Benedict’s Monetary. The first cable car was put in January 21, 1913, the first skilife Jochpass in 1943, walkinglift chair in 1944 and the first revolving cable car that can hold up to 80 people was in 1992. Peter also told us that this ski resort was the biggest in central Switzerland and the Terrace at the top of the mountain was the biggest in central Switzerland as well. As of right now the resort has two hotels and the Chalet is used not only as a bar and café but as a meets, and conventions space as well. Peter explained to us there future plans of one day combined all the resorts on the mountains and make ... read more

Today was soooo fun! We went to the top of the Alps of Mount Titlis and played in the snow! First off, we walked over to the Mount Titlis information center and listened to a speech on the impact the mountain has on the tourism industry in Engelberg. That was interesting to see how things have progressed and the ideas of how the are wanting to keep progressing. We then rode up the mountain in several different types of ski lifts, including the world's first rotating ski lift. That was scary but the view was amazing! Once at the top we got to run around and play in the snow. We threw snowballs, slid down the hills, built snow men and took and endless number of pictures of us all bundled up. Then we went to ... read more

Today we went to the top of Mount Titlis (10,000 FEET!). It was a whole lot of fun. To get to the top of the mountain there were three different lifts to take you to the top. The 1st was a 6-person cable car that had two stops. At the second stop you would get off and get onto a bigger car that didn't have seats. It had bars and handles that you hang onto. Once you got to the next stop, you get on the worlds first revolving cable car, which holds up to 80 people. The ski resort had a restaurant, photoshop, and giftshop. It also included a glacier cave, which had different colored lighting and music. Once we got to the top we then took a chair lift to the snow park, were ... read more

So I never really thought I'd ride in a cable car in Switzerland up to the top of Mt. Titlus! I was wrong! Today we heard a lecture about Mt. Titlus, the resort and what the past held for Titlus and Engelberg, what is presently going on, and what the future holds! Of course global warming is always an issue when running an operation like this, and even though the resort is taking steps to both combat global warming and lower its own emissions and help with environment protection, it could always be doing better! For example, in the ice cave, it needs to limit the number of people allowed in at once, or else body heat from too many people will lead to the deterioration and melting of the ice. Granted its a slow process ... read more

Day 5: Mt. Titlis Today was the day I had been looking forward to the most. Mt Titlis! Traveling to the top of the mountain was quite an ordeal, which required us to take three different lifts, one of which being a rotating gondola that provided us an amazing view of the mountain. Upon arriving at the top of the mountain I was a bit overwhelmed by the sheer amount of Indian tourists, and by the stench. The ski resort was on the very top of the mountain at an elevation of 10,000 feet. There was an outdoor seating area to eat lunch, which we were unable to use thanks to the gale force winds we were experiencing at the time. There was also a snow covered hill we could climb on which provided an amazing ... read more

After a long day of driving we wake up today to go to Mt. Titlis. We walked over the cable car that will take all of us up to the mountain. We stopped at a bar/restraint to have a presentation by Gabriela Sigrist. He is the marketing director and sales rep for Mt. Titlis. Mt. Titlis is 10,000 feet high and they have changed cable cars 3 times to better improve them. Last year, Mt. Titlis made about $42,000,000 in revenue. 60% of that figure was from the winter season and 40% comes from off season time which is normally during the summer. We had some croissants and hot chocolate for us to snack on. He gave a really nice presentation. After the presentation, we left to go to the mountain. We have to take 3 ... read more
