Yes I bought a Swedish phrase book before I arrived. Luckily the Swedes were spared my bravely spewed bits of Swedish as most Scandinavians speak English very well. I remember asking two motorcyclists stopped at a traffic light for directions back to our hotel when the Gamla Stan exit dumped us in a part of town I was unfamiliar. They were so helpful and friendly, addressed me in perfect English, showed interest in my holiday experience there, and my travel companions didn't want me to ask. Our hotel is a bit of a letdown compared with the Royal Christiana in Oslo. This could be her plain-Jane sister, the Scandic Anglais. Our room overlooks an air shaft and has a rather dismal air. Don't let that deter you. To be fair it has been nicely renovated since ... read more

Dear All Greetings! This is my third and final blog entry for my wonderful mini mid-winter trip to Sweden in February. So far I have written about my explorations in Stockholm and nearby Uppsala. In this one I plan to relate my amazing final full day in the country, taking in some seriously beautiful places of nature around the capital, as well as the day of my journey home on the Thursday of half-term week. As I mentioned in my first blog entry, the trip there was a little stressful to say the least. I must admit, I did spend a bit of time on my trip wondering how my return journey would go, half-expecting my flight again to be cancelled, but in the end it wasn’t, and the return journey went just swimmingly, thank goodness! ... read more

Dear All Greetings again! In this blog entry I will write up about my adventures on my second full day in Sweden. After my first incredible day exploring Stockholm, I thought it would be hard to beat, but it turned out each day was just amazing, and so varied from each other. I felt I really packed a lot into my three days of exploring this small and beautiful part of Sweden. For my second day, I planned a day trip northwards, about 70km by train, taking around 35 minutes by the express service, to the ancient and historical centre of Uppsala. I was not disappointed. The city is famous for its current status as a university town, but also for its importance in both Swedish and Viking history. I also enjoy visiting a place a ... read more

Dear All Greetings from London, towards the end of another February half-term, and just after another wonderful mid-winter mini-break. Since Denmark this time last year, I have been continuing with the Scandinavia theme for my February trip, mainly for my sheer recent fascination with this region of the world: its history, beauty and people. Whilst Denmark last year was a lovely little trip, my mini trip this year to Sweden has to be one of my most enjoyable trips – short, but incredibly stunning and sweet. I really did thoroughly enjoy every moment of my time in this stunningly beautiful country. On Sunday I was due to fly to Stockholm, where I booked myself into a lovely little apartment attached to the house of a Finno-Swedish family in the suburbs of Stockholm, which was to be ... read more

I read about a trip around one of the Indian states called Karnataka, the trip starting and ending in Goa. I asked my sons if they were game and when there was chance of dad footing the bill, they were game. We arrived in Goa after a, as usual, boring flight but to Qatar’s credit leg room was almost like in the old days. We get picked up by the hotel’s driver and general go to guy. Rather worse for wear we got up later the same day and went into Calangute for SIM cards and the odd beer. Surprise surprise the rental companies , a few didn’t exist, some did but did not have bikes, all of them would not rent out bikes to ride outside of Goa. Fancy web pages and all, and they ... read more

Pidennetty viikonloppu Tukholmassa, torstaista sunnuntaihin, suorat lennot Pirkkalasta. Ensimmäisen päivän ohjelmassa oli käynti ABBA-museossa. Minähän olin käynyt siellä jo aiemmin, mutta nähtävää riitti toisellakin kerralla. Museon jälkeen kiertelen kaupungilla, kävin katsomassa sattumalta pääkirjastoakin.... read more

Your wish is my command my lady, there have been plans afoot about going to Portugal and travelling around. Somehow it was implied that I was to be part of that trip, ie I had come with her. Damned and blasted, one third of the fun and twice as expensive, how can you beat that. Actually It’ll be fun , the old girl is easygoing and nice to travel with. The only major draw back is that we’re travelling on four wheels which by definition should be twice as fun as on two wheels, it ain’t. Some lousy Seat with about 4 horse powers and seat designed by Torquemada himself, how can any one in the illustrious year 2019 make such lousy car seats, intercourse, after a bout two hours I’m toast and feel my years ... read more

On the train, two backpackers try to evade the conductor as they have not paid for a ticket. They are put off quietly at the next stop. Waking up in Stockholm, SWEDEN, we walk to the 13th century medieval city of Gamla Stan within the old town. The cobble-stone streets also lead to the Royal Palace where the King resides, and you can view the apartments and Royal treasures. The ethereal paintings on the ceilings are exquisite. Hand in hand we stroll through Kungstradgarden park, right beside the street named Brigitte Nielsen who was a Danish actress once married to Sylvester Stallone. A coffee tram rumbles past with a giant coffee cup on the roof. For supper, it is off to a sushi place, and it is the best we have ever had. How strange, fabulous ... read more

A couple of years ago, I was marooned in icy Dundee in Scotland to attend an induction course at the University. Stuck in the Apex hotel down by a deserted and frigid Marina, the days quickly assumed a pattern. Each January morning, I would head down breakfast and load up on the haggis as part of a cooked breakfast. I began to enjoy the toothsome, morerish, over-seasoned peppery/saltiness of the dish. I delved again and again into the silver tray and loaded up. Although made from occult and arcane organs your average vet hasn’t seen in his working lifetime, a strange addiction began to take hold. Cold turkey was harsh and unremitting; comprising a six month struggle with chronic, bilious dyspepsia. Swedish cooking has a near identical dish. Polsa. This is haggis liberated and unfettered by ... read more
