We arrived today in Stockholm, Sweden and went straight to our cousin Laura's apartment. The house is beautiful with an amazing view of the city. Suzanne and I decided that caffiene would override jetlag and after chugging coffee headed out into the city with Laura as our guide and the two kids (Will and Claudia) in tow. The city is beautiful, and it didn't hurt that the weather was gorgeous! We walked for hours, through Old Town, by the water, and all over. Eventually we headed on a water taxi to Rosengaurd, and small cafe that is on acres and acres of land where they grow their own food. Here the kids could run and play and we could eat fresh foods in the shade. Suzanne and I then took advantage of our surroundings and napped ... read more

Ok, as promised, some pictures and stories that don't involve solely historical artifacts. Sorry for the delay - most of these are from other people's cameras (thanks Molly!). On Wednesday, the whole group went into Stockholm. We stopped at the historical museum for a while then broke off into two groups to explore. It was wet and rainy, so our group decided to stop into a pub (Picwicks) for some cider and beer rather get more soggy. I had some delicious pear cider and we sat outside on a covered patio to people watch. From there, the whole group went dinner at Herman's - Professor Roddy's treat. Herman's is this awesome vegitarian buffet restaurant over looking the lake and Gamla Stan (old town). It was beautiful even in the rain. After dinner most of us ... read more

So, for the last two days we have been running around Sigtuna and Stockholm looking at old stuff ... in a history class, go figure ... St. Olaf's, St. Mary's, and St. Peter's are old churches that are walking distance from our school. The only one of the three is still operational (St. Mary's). St. Mary's was beautiful. From the outside it is breathtaking and inside it has been fully restored - though it is now lutheran rather than the original Dominican. The candlabra is for prayer candles and is basically the first thing you see when you walk into the church, I thought that the design was very interesting because it is more clean and classic then what I would typically associate with a historical church. St. Peters was where the King went to ... read more

Day two at Stockholm I roused up exactly at 4am as the sun’s rays entered the room and my body told me to wake up. Having unsuccessfully tried to sleep and not wanting to bother the other sleeping gals, I decided to go for a run an at 5:30am. I ran towards Gamla Stan (Old Town for Swedish), ziz zagging through cobble stone streets with multi colored faceted 1600 homes still occupied, shops still asleep, and rounded towards the Royal Palace to find the soldiers in camoflouge suits instead of their blue ones yesterday (these soldiers are much more relaxed than the ones at Buckingham Palace, I always wondered what would make the statue-like soldiers at Buckingham Palace blush) with real guns. Cyclists zoomed past as I crossed a street to a bridge, seeing another ... read more

Sweden trip Getting There I’m such a travel snob. There, I said it first so you don’t have to repeat it to me. I was already frustrated by almost every bit of my plan before I board the plane. The fact that I have to fly to Philly instead of flying straight to Stockholm bothered the hell out of me. Flying coach is going to be a bitch, finding my way from the airport to the hostel is going to be challenge, and not having any privacy will invade this new personal space issue I’ve been having lately. Indeed, to my surprise, I sleep like a baby. I knew that I had to rest up to take advantage of a full Sunday in Stockholm given I’ll get there at 8:15am and will be terribly jetlag if ... read more

Midsommer and the Maypole Europe » Sweden » Stockholm » Stockholm By Whittall and WestJune 22nd 2007Sal Whittallurl='/Videos/3949.html' onclick='dialog("/Videos/3949.html?popped=1","tbvideo",600,600);return false;'Otter rolling in dirt Midsommer eve, as only Sweden could do it... For the authentic feel, we went back to Skansen. The Maypole is a large phallus fertilising the ground (apparently) and the dances are strange- everyone pretending to be frogs hopping round the it, ducks swimming round it and pigs, er, snuffling round it maybe. The songs all sounded fairly similar, a... read more
