Hey all! So, with my class officially over, my paper and final turned in, I have left the Folkhögskola and moved down the road to the Sigtunastiftelsen. It is a very peacefull and well kept hotel. A wholy different experience then the dorm-life of the last month. After completing our papers, finals, and parting dinner, the group (sans professor) headed out for a final glorious night of drinking and revelry in Stockholm. I did some research and came up with a highly recomended brew-pub called Akkurat. It was awesome. Just the right atmosphere, not so loud that we couldn't talk to eachother and locals we were sitting next to. I had a pint of Guiness, of course, and then some great Heffewizens. After the bar we headed back to central station to catch the bus back ... read more

Untitled Hey, sorry it's taken a while, but class has picked up a little and we have a 10 page paper due Friday, so finding time to blog has been tricky. As promised, more about Visby and Gotland ... I have over 100 pictures from this outing - I'm not posting all of them, but I have posted about 50, so you might have to hit next at the bottom to fully enjoy the pictoral splendor. As I've said before, Visby is absolutely beautiful. It is one of the oldest cities in Sweden because of its strategic location along several trading routes. To get there, we took a bus, 2 trains, and a ferry. We were on the island for a total of 5 days, staying in a youth hostel about a mile outside of ... read more

Hey all! I just wanted to update quickly to let everyone know that I am in Visby on the island of Gotland. We don't have internet access here except for in internet cafes. The city and the island are breathakingly beautiful and I've been taking pictures like a mad woman. I had no idea that there were actually places that look like this ... it is so vibrant and looks like something out of a story book. I promise to post more once I have regular internet access again. Cheers!... read more

Ok, as promised, some pictures and stories that don't involve solely historical artifacts. Sorry for the delay - most of these are from other people's cameras (thanks Molly!). On Wednesday, the whole group went into Stockholm. We stopped at the historical museum for a while then broke off into two groups to explore. It was wet and rainy, so our group decided to stop into a pub (Picwicks) for some cider and beer rather get more soggy. I had some delicious pear cider and we sat outside on a covered patio to people watch. From there, the whole group went dinner at Herman's - Professor Roddy's treat. Herman's is this awesome vegitarian buffet restaurant over looking the lake and Gamla Stan (old town). It was beautiful even in the rain. After dinner most of us ... read more

So, for the last two days we have been running around Sigtuna and Stockholm looking at old stuff ... in a history class, go figure ... St. Olaf's, St. Mary's, and St. Peter's are old churches that are walking distance from our school. The only one of the three is still operational (St. Mary's). St. Mary's was beautiful. From the outside it is breathtaking and inside it has been fully restored - though it is now lutheran rather than the original Dominican. The candlabra is for prayer candles and is basically the first thing you see when you walk into the church, I thought that the design was very interesting because it is more clean and classic then what I would typically associate with a historical church. St. Peters was where the King went to ... read more

I Made It! Europe By CAKristin June 25th 2007I finally made it to Sweden, and it proved to be quite an adventure to get here. The flights were wholy uneventfull but the airports were hideous. Anyways ... I'm here now, safe and sound. We are staying in a suburb of Stockholm called Sigtuna. Sigtuna is the oldest setlement that's still around, founded in 980. We're staying on the campus of an informal adult school, something like a continuing education center. Here's some pictures from around the campus ...... read more
