Note to Mom: You may find what you are about to read disturbing. I am sure you have all heard of the famous Running of the Bulls, or San Fermines. This is a annual week long party dedicated to Saint Fermin, in which the town of Pamplona, Spain explodes and becomes the center of Spain tourism. This year it began at midnight on July 6th, with the Chupinazo and a parade of Saint Fermin through the streets of Pamplona. At 8am everyday following the beginning festival (Chupinazo), there is the famous Encierro, in which about a dozen angry bulls are released in about a quarter mile long double gated route through the streets of Pamplona to the Bull Fighting Ring. In these streets are hundreds of people, clad in all white with a red scarf, running ... read more

Hola, Well what a time we had at Pamplona. Beat all our expectations. We left little Otley very early on sunday morning (6.30am) and jumped onto a bus to london, after 4 and a half hours on that we caught a train to the pub where we were meeting out tour group and managed to fit in 2 beers before we jumped on another bus (2.30pm) for a 23.5 hour bus ride and ferry journey to Spain. Very very long, especially for us with the travel we had already done before hand. We were allowed to drink on the bus. Our plan of getting drunk first and falling asleep so no one annoyed us didn;t really work and we were pretty much kept up all night by a few lads that were extra excited. Didn't matter ... read more

This is something I have always wanted to do but something always seemed to come up that prevented me from going (mainly friends making excuses). In April 2008 I got engaged and when we set a date for the wedding there was only one place I wanted my stag weekend and that was Pamplona and the festival of San Fermin, also known as the running of the bulls. San Fermin starts on the 6th July and finishes on the 14th of July every year, at 8am every morning roughly 6-7 bulls, weighing approx 650kgs (about 1450lbs) each are released on to the streets and they run from their pen in to the bull ring about 800 metres away. The run is up a slight hill the entire time, especially at the beginning, there are only two ... read more

On the Camino. Shoulders tight, calves sore, fourth left metatarsal blistered, skin tan, beard long (for me), clothes hanging on a line after being hand washed with packet of gel, stomach growling soon, food ingested (porridge with banana for bfast, nuts and seeds, coffee, and orange during the walk, bread with sausage for lunch, water, water and more water), body cleaned of all sweat by shower, feet happy in flip flops after 22 km in hiking shoes, yoga mat sitting at my side here because I´ll go outside after this and do some stretches. Thank god for all that acting training in how to be aware of the head, neck, back, etc. Handy when you have a heavy bag and you are dragging along all sorts of things you don´t really need but you are too ... read more

A night out. Beer and sangria. Meeting people. Talking. the sky bright blue, then darker, then deep ocean blue. Could have seen fishes swimming in the sky. But that would have been the sangria spirits talking. Traipsing around with a Scottish guy and an Irish guy. Funny friendly guys. It was great, because lots of talk of literature and theater. One guy: "Oh, I liked Joyce, but now I´m over that.." Please, dude. Gavin from Ireland is in love with Steinbeck. Robin from Scotland likes to do Jack Nicholson impressions. Refuses to do "Herés Johnny" from The Shining because, well, "everybody does that one." Met two girls, Aussie and NZ. Accents indistinguishable to me. Like American and Canadian, they say. One of them had pink nailpolish and it was wearing off. Don´t ask my why I ... read more

The tides turned, the train departed and arrived, the bus scooped me up in Bayonne, a tiny "city" in France near the border where I had a real basque meal and stared at rivers weaving through the concrete, the bus took me as the sun fell and the Pyrenees rose up slowly then quickly, and I had feelings of India stirring within: voluptuous mystery. Arrived in St. Jean Pied de Port, a really small village in France, and was greeted by very enthusiastic friendly camino volunteers. Got my pilgrims passport, got a lodging, found two Polish girls and an old Italian man there and then failed to really fall asleep due to excitement, anticipation and feelings of "what the fuck is going on here?" Thus began the camino. Which I am on now. It´s real. It´s ... read more

Panorama Alto de Perdon, look for me. The Camino attracts all people for all reasons. These people can be put into categories and so far they go something like this: The Fit and Physical - These are the people who only want to see how quickly they can travel the Way. They have no time to stop and smell the coffee, roses or even the boots that sit outside the dormitory door. They are up at 5 (with no awareness of how loud their backpack zips are in the dark and sometimes freezing mornings). They stop only to obey the call of nature and speed past with dust flying while on the trail. They boast about their distances each night and are oblivious to the eye rollers within earshot. They arrive at their destination by 3pm ... read more

Panorama Me in front of Cirauqui - Rough translation 'Nest of vipers' Daily life on the Camino is simple. Walk, find a bed, food, water and a bar. I'll break the day down further so that you can understand the minor details. Albergues or Refuges have daily hours of opening around 14:00 for check in. They shut the doors, mostly at 22:00, silence from 22:30 or 23:00 to 6 or sometimes 7 in the morning and then pilgrims have to be out by 8. It's hard to get in a good night's partying with the locals when you have restrictions like this. The locals don't come out to party until midnight in some places. So in some towns it's nice to take a room in a pension or hostal instead. That way, you can firstly have ... read more

We had a pretty ambitious drive planned for the day, so we decided to take a little more of the A & N roads which would save some time when we need it in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Pamplona is a large city so we used the by-pass. Mike & I would have run with the bulls if it had been the right time of the year; but it was not. Lynn had mentioned Sos del Rey Catolico early in the trip planning, but we debated if time would permit, as it was off the main road and require a back-track. This trip was for research of her next book and Sos was the 1452 birthplace of Fernando II of Aragon, surely a place worthy of a visit. If you travel in this area, make ... read more

Sorry I have been silent for the last few days but when you get to your next destination after walking between 19 - 26 kilometers through rain and mud, the only thing you think about is a warm shower and a nap, followed by dinner. Then it is lights out so you are rested up enough to continue the trek. Puente La Reina has an amazing church called the Church of the Crucifix which some historians believe to be of Templar Origen. There is an unusual Christ crucified hanging on a Y shaped cross. After a restless night in Puente La Reina, I set off with Bogdan, a Canadian Filmmaker, Sue from Australia and Velda from New Zealand towards the town of Estella. As soon as we crossed over the medieval bridge, I ran into an ... read more
