I arrived in Spain on the 5th, and I will be staying here until the end of my Eurotrip on the 11th. I have to say that of all places I've been, these parts of Spain have far less people who speak English than the rest of the cities I visited in Europe. Fortunately I took 5 years of Spanish in middle school/high school which was more than enough to get by, but I could imagine that finding your way around could be difficult without knowing the language. On the 5th I arrived in Seville via a plane from Berlin, but I didn't really get a chance to walk around the city because I was staying in Cordoba that night. I finally made it to the hostel in Cordoba at about 11:30, but I went straight ... read more

July 6th VIVA SAN FERMIN, PAMPLONA AND THE RUNNING OF THE BULLS! I just arrived at my hotel in Pamplona and already the craziness of the festival is all around. I was hoping that last night I would get a good nights sleep on my last day in Madrid but I got 4 new roommates in my hostel, and it turns out they are 4 American guys in law school at Oklahoma State and they planned on doing the run also. So I helped them get bus tickets on the same bus as me (saving them about $80 each) and we started chatting away. I showed them the tips the guy gave me and i showed them some of my videos from the bull fight and we decided that we would try to do the run ... read more

Finally here! Today has been really hot. I probably drank four liters of water before noon, which really was needed. It's also very easy to notice that one is in Spain now. This area is much dryer than the french side on these latitudes. The trees are often thin and squiggly, like they're also craving for water. It is very nice to finally arrive in the afternoon. I slept for a couple of hours when I arrived to this hostel run by the municipality. A little more than 40km today, from Cizur Menor, close to Pamplona, to Estella.... read more

At the moment in Lorca, not far from Estella. Yesterday was really nice, I made it 45 km without feeling too sore anywhere. I met more Swedes, more people from France and Germany, even Korea (again). Yesterday was mostly downhill, which made for quite nice relaxing rides. Today is more uphill, and as the paths are less covered by vegetation, it is much hotter. Will probably sleep in Estella this night.... read more

At the moment, I am at possibly the most luxurious hostel ever. It was built last year for the special holy year when lots of people walked the camino. They have thoght of everything. I have had a really nice time. I arrived at Saint Jean Pied de Port yesterday afternoon and met two girls, one from Canada, currently living in Boston and one from Germany, currently living in Switzerland. No one I have met until now have lived at the same place for all their lives. I found a place to sleep, assemblied my unicycle, ate dinner with the two girls I met at the first hostel (run by an older very gentle woman) and three other guys, a first mate from Sweden, a cyclist from Germany, and a really nice guy from Los Angeles. ... read more

We apologise in advance if this blog gets a bit garbled because we have just had the most incredible meal. We decided to eat at the hotel tonight not knowing what we were in for. The waitress couldn’t speak English and we had no idea of Spanish so we ordered from a set menu that cost 10 euros 50 each. We both took the easy road and chose seasonal vegetables (turned out to be vegetable soup) followed by fish. Both very tasty. Then came dessert – ice cream or pudding or (we weren’t sure what the third item was). The ice cream was a Nestle chocolate-coated ice cream on a stick and the pudding was like crème brulee. Included in the meal was a full bottle of wine and coffee. Now you can see why we ... read more

Our time in Roncensevilles had come to a close just as the torrential rains began. Just a couple hours south of us the roads had turned to rivers and small European cars had become life rafts for stranded Spaniards. KIA´s may be greener but a Chevy Silverado wouldn´t have been swept away with the first spring rain. Luckily the more northern parts were spared from complete flooding but it made for an interesting 12 mile descent into Zurig, our end destination for the day. A warm cup of coffee and a pastry for breakfast served to warm us up as we set off in the rain. Although it was pointless to attempt to keep our feet dry, we tried to dodge as many puddles as possible until we came across the inevitable- an overflown creek with ... read more

"Buen Camino" Happy Saint Patricks Day: Searching For Some Ibuprofin And A Green Beer In No Particular Order. Linsey and I hit the road on Tuesday morning determined to make it to Puente de la Reina, the small town that evaded us the day before due to the imposibility of the metric system. Kilometers? We made the 4 mile trek into town and toured the local church which was built in the 12th century. It was quite a spectacle but unfortunately we only had 5 minutes to tour the town, grab some bread, and start a return hike back to Pamplona to catch a bus. We had 5 hours to hike 12 miles back up and over a mountain and into Pamplona. Linsey seemed optomistic but I asked the Priest for a little spiritual assistance. The ... read more

The Delirious Fandango Lesson one of the journey did not take long to smack me directly in the forehead. Preparing for a months long hike, coordinating and fine-tuning a pack-list, and finally taking an 8 hour flight across the ocean is best done without being a shade hungover. But, it felt improper to leave Burke County without one last round of celebration. Needless to say, the morning after, with shades pulled down, shirt haphazardly buttoned, and tylenol in hand, I jumped on the plane with Linsey shuffling along right beside me. In the infinite wisdom of the ariline companies, American Airlines had scheduled a layover in New York. Unfortunately for us, we flew into Luguardia and flew out of JFK. This airport shift in and of itself is not a great logistical hurdle. However, just as ... read more
