The Tours: First DayJoseph EbyI apologize for the lack of pictures in this entry; most of the places we went did not allow them. To compensate, here are links to the English websites for El Prado El Palacio Real (wiki) Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia I got to the hotel a bit early on Thursday, so I had some time to roam around. The hotel was only a mile away from the hostel, which means it was only a half-hour walk to the city center. My map said that the national music library was close by, so I decided to pay it a visit. I was having a bit of trouble fo... read more

Me Encanta España Europe » Spain » Madrid » Madrid By BabyruthMay 25th 2007Amanda Robinson¡Hola! España is an amazing city, there are things here in Spain that you could never see in the states. Today we traveled 30 minutes outside of Madrid to the Valley of the Fallen, which is a monument and Church built inside a mountain to remember the people who died in the Spainish civil war. It was amazing. Also, we went to El Escorial, the palace and basilica of the past Kings and Queens of Spain. They are all buried there underneath the Church. I´ll add some pictures later because The internet cafe is going to ki... read more

First EVER Over-Seas FlightTour of Old MadridJoseph Eby(Okay, so I fudged on the date a little. I´m actually writing this in a 24-h internet cafe in Granada. It´s midnight here, so it´s still light over there. Several times a day I ask myself, "It is daytime there yet?" The aswer is almost invariably "no.") Well, let me begin by saying, I apologize for the last entry. What a way to start. Que lame-o! Planes, los Trenes, Autobúses, y la Metro First, some rambling. Those of you that fly frequently probably take this for granted: the plane window seat is the best view in the world. Hands down. I was lucky enough to take off before sunrise after sunset in the same day. Meeting/catching the sun at 30000 feet is something else. Another thing I noticed: Ameri ... read more

Hola Amigos! I can´t believe I´m actually in Madrid! It is sooo surreal. The city is gorgeous and so lively. The jet-lag didn´t kill me too much. I got a two hour nap and I think I´m surviving on adrenaline right now... Six of us girls went out last night to a couple bars, because our hotel is located near everything, in La Puerta del Sol. We got some free Sangria and met a lot of other international students. There were other girls from Texas, some boys from London, and some other guys from Ireland (I love the accents, but don´t worry I´m not getting into trouble!) Today we toured the Palacio Reale, where the King and Queen used to live. It was amazing, there is nothing like it in the States. It was raining ... read more

Finally, I´m free! Grandma, Aunt Beaver, and I left for the airport at 4:30 yesterday morning. It seems like most of my trip was spent waiting at an airport; traffic was light and I ended up waiting in Tulsa for over an hour. The plane we took to Newark was about this big: ·-------------· I loved every minute of it, even if I will be walking a little crooked for several days. Interesting note: my backpack does not fit in the overhead compartments of any but the biggest planes, nor does it fit under the seat. If I hadn´t payed attention, I could have easily lost a knee to the drink cart (sharp corners, you know). The landing at Newark was uneventful, but I enjoyed listening to the kid behind me point out all the highlights ... read more

". . . I would rather dine on suckling pig at Botin's that sit and think of casualties my friends have suffered." - Ernest Hemingway, from Death in the Afternoon (end of Chapter 10). And so it was that Aron and Sheila found themselves, on their last night in Madrid, at the oldest Restaurant in Madrid and indeed the oldest in the world: Botin. Opened in 1725 it is the oldest according to Guiness World Records, and known for its suckling roast pigs, Hemmingway's visits, and there's even rumour that even Goya worked here as a waiter before he became the famous and respected artist he was later known as. Oh, the piggy, so crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Mmmm...and the lamb, almost as good. Well worth the visit. Well, folks, ... read more

Woke up early - Aron set the alarm for 730. As you know from my past blog entry, he got up late and we were out in the plaza for 930. The book store we wanted did not open until 10AM so we had coffee and tea at a cafe. Tea went from "sorry that's not possible" to miraculously in front of Sheila. Mios Dio! No food though, breakfast does not seem popular. All of the Madridites seem to be asleep hungover from last night's party. Smart. From there went to another book store since the first did not have the Madrid guide en ingles. Oops, forgot that. Got that at Puerta del Sol, then off to Jardin Botanico (where Sheila got picture happy). Spent a good portion of the afternoon walking through the Prado. ... read more

Hola, mis amigos...well we made it to Spain! Yes this is like 4 days later or 3 days or who knows how many days, but I just wanted to update really quick, I only have like 8 minutes left on my time down here in the basement of the hotel on their one computer with a crazy Spanish keyboard....I LOVE Spain and I LOVE hearing Spanish and doing a terrible job of speaking it (but I am trying really hard, and they recognize that!! hehe). I have enjoyed visiting the Palacio Real (huge and magnificent royal palace), Corte Inglés (wonderfully large department store with EVERYTHING), Toledo today (picturesque hillside city that doesn´t even LOOK real when you´re walking through it) and taking the METRO (lovelovelove) and sitting on streetside cafés in the amazing weather just ... read more

Ahhh...all the hard work is finally over...Sheila had her last meeting today, and now we're free to play, play, play! Changed hotels as the one we were in last night was in business area. Ended up in the perfect location (Aron's glad Sheila dealt with all the booking), mere blocks from Prado Museum and in Plaza Santa Ana. We can walk everywhere from here and we will. Tonight we wandered around the area and checked out what we could without any specific plans. At 7PM we walked past a bus stop that read 30 degrees. A while later we went past one that said 37 but then again that was in direct sunlight. Being a Kamloopsian Sheila says 30 easily, 37 not so much. A little nervous to see what the temps are like tomorrow. ... read more

Thank goodness it cools down in the evenings in Madrid. It was 28 degrees with a breeze last night at around 10:30, and if you can believe it that felt refreshing. Sheila and Aron decided they'd best play like the locals so after their afternoon tapas, wandered the city for a while (note we should have been siesta'ing but never made it). At around 10:30 started looking for dinner, and it took us until 11:30 to find an empty seat somewhere. Ate a meat and cheese platter (Aron ate most of a pig, Spanish style I believe) and then shared a salad. So much cheese, so much meat. So few veggies. The salad had a minimal amount of lettuce and greens, loaded with mozza (whole strips of bocconcinni), blue cheese, proscuitto, and the like. Need ... read more
