Dear Chintoo, I read your story in Planet Goa and I couldn’t help myself. I just need to write back to you. Who am I?, you may ask. I’m Carolina and, as you would see me, I’m a gori (white female). I didn’t take any offence reading your article but I just felt so identified with what you were saying. So, here is the other side of the story. I’m from Spain and, I don’t’ know why, India had been always a place I wanted to go. Why? I don’t really know. Actually it’s a real mystery.... Did I know much about India? Mmmmm.... no! Did I have any relatives there? Let me think...... no! Did I know some people who have been there? Yes, but, is it reason enough? Not really..... Did I ... read more

Lou contemplates: In his book 'Homage to Barcelona', the author Colm Toibin gives a compelling recount of the siege on a number of buildings in the city during the Civil War. When we were walking in Barcelona near the Cathedral we came across a square where the massive blocks of ancient stone surrounding a doorway were pock marked with bullets and chunks of stone had been blown away. It was really energetically draining to just stand and observe the space- we had a deep sense that ‘shit had gone down’. Some spaces are really charged with their past. It seems that Spain is a country that contains many stories about the defense of space and identity across the ages. When we were on the train platform waiting to go to Girona we noticed the two differing ... read more

Last night we went to bed around 5 in the morning and had to be up at 9. It was a little hard but well worth all the dancing we did in the beautiful forest. We toured Girona today. First we had a conference on Medieval Spain. After that we traveled to Centro Judio Bonastruc, which is a jewish museum. We had another conference there called the Jews in Girona. There was so much history in this city it was interesting to learn about. We then visited Medieval Girona. We went to Catedral de Gerona (Gerona Cathedral), Banos Arabes (Public bathrooms which were a lot different than any public bathroom I’ve ever seen), and Muralla. Everything was so beautiful and so different than the more city-like feel where our hotel was located. The detailing ... read more

Visitamos a la Tarraco Romana como anfiteatro, circo, y el museo arqueologico. Today we visited La Tarraco Romana. We went to the anfiteatro, circo, and the archeology museum. The anfiteatro is where the gladiators would fight either each other or animals in front of an audience. They had rooms called “vomitario” which is where spectators were allowed to throw up if the sight or smell of these battles was a little too much to handle…we definitely don’t have those in America. The circo is very small after years of erosion. We only saw one section of it because the rest has been destroyed. The circo is where they had chariot races so it used to be a huge circular arena. img=https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151391296749428&set=a.10151383260394428.570513.693919427&type=3&theater Even though the circo was almost all gone, what did... read more

Geo: 41.9818, 2.8237Ten times in Spain - during my first time here, I never would've guessed that I would return to this country multiple times, let alone ten. But here we are once again - though now as familiar as my own neighbourhood, it never fails to excite or show me something new, each and every time.Having already seen the main highlights of Barcelona, I left it up to Benita to decide what to do today. Barcelona is a vibrant big Spanish city which, while great, offers a contrasting experience from a small Spanish town. So we headed off to Girona - though there would be no dining at a World-famous restaurant like a few years ago, there was still the opportunity to enjoy the most Spanish of past times - a leisurely stroll through town. ... read more

This past weekend I attended the IES study journey to Costa Brava. I really enjoyed this vacation because IES did a very good job of planning this trip. Costa Brava is the northern coastal region of Spain, located north of Barcelona. The cities we visited in Costa Brava were: Figueres, Cadaques, Girona, La Jonquera, and Collioure. I really enjoyed the weekend because the sites we visited were fascinating and rich with history. I also got to visit France for the first time when we went to Cadaques! The weekend started on Friday morning at 7:30 A.M. in Plaza Catalunya. All of us IES students met outside of the Hard Rock Cafe to board our buses for Costa Brava. As soon as I got settled in my seat I could tell that I would have a great ... read more

The kolams are these small mandalas that in some areas of India, are painted on the ground outside the front door to draw luck and fortune. In the village where I was, basically they did these anew every day, but there are some special dates where kolams are much more elaborate and more colorful (e.g. the festival of Diwali, India’s National Day, etc ...). Kolams are drawn with a kind of colored chalk powder that is bought in the market. Sometimes they are made of rice- flour paste, which may be eaten by little animals symbolising a reverence for the smallest living creatures. The skill and speed of the women is incredible as they trace out the patterns. Usually it is the responsibility of one family member to draw the mandala each morning, most often the ... read more

On the 20th of September 2010 I went to India to work as a teacher volunteer for 6 months in Vedanthangal (a village in the state of Tamil Nadu, South India). I came back to Spain in March and, after some time just to catch up with my friends and family, I’ve been travelling a bit around Spain and Europe with my boyfriend Paul (Australian who is in Spain for the first time). We went to the north of Spain (Camino de Santiago), Formentera, South France, Switzerland and some small trips in Catalonia. India is in the air all the time since Paul arrived here because he’s in love with this beautiful country but since last week something is changing in me..... I can see again those colourful saris contrasting on black skin; I can hear ... read more

Hello Readers! Welcome to Auguetta's blog, my blog!! I’ve decided to create a blog on the Travelblog website in order to share all my Chinese adventures. I want to speak my mind, to express my thoughts and daily life while away from home. I am not a writer, but a traveller, with lots of things to share. I love travelling; travelling is one of the best experiences ever. You get to know new people, new places. I had the chance to travel to different countries and now I feel I cannot stop. Every day I think about what my next destination would be. I am now currently located in Spain, but heading to China in a week. I am really interested in living in Asia, experience the culture, live a new adventure. I’ve once read, "Life ... read more

So headed up to Costa Brava for the weekend- was a 1 and a half hour drive – I taught the girls how to play pea knuckle wars- bad move. Felt like 1000 games later we arrived yay! Pals is a beautiful old historical town- the beach house was in a beautiful complex- typical Spanish houses all white and stone and concrete- it then had a really nice big pool to share with the other 10 houses in that part and another pool on the other side for the other 10. We decided to head to beach and took a picnic lunch- but was so windy and even cold! Felt very strange wearing jeans and jersey at the beach- although quite Spanish ☺ It is starting to get really hot so normally walking around Barcelona in ... read more
