Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

The chaos and trauma of the last few days are now at an end, for the time being anyway. We are back to the comforts of spare rooms and lounges on improvised beds and mattresses. Our good friend Julianne meets us at the port of Barcelona and without further ado we are in a train and heading for a smaller town called Girona. It is pretty to say the least, but beginning to rain. This is good, because we get another chance to unfurl our clear plastic umbrellas, stretching that 350 Yen even further. Julianne’s partner Tom meets us at the [View Full Entry]

A Mediterranean Cruise! Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Girona
Alrighty! So Lindo and I have a conference to see how would be the best way to get to Barcelona from Rome. We have a few options open to us, we could go first class using our Eurail tickets during the day, do an overnighter or go by sea. Both the rail options involve transfers which, for English only incompetents, makes us a bit nervous, and there will be border checks too - we are still smarting from the Swiss experience. We end up both heartily agreeing to catch a ferry, which will take about 19 hours. The photos on the [View Full Entry]

After beating my self up at the Paris Beauvais Airport, I finally got in a better mood and came to terms with my flight to Girona. Reflecting on it all, I had a great time in Paris. I did actually want to go to the south of France first before I headed more south to Spain. I was eyeing Bayonne and Biarritz but ended up kinda feeling uncomfortable going to a small town by myself. It´s a little out of the way for a train and well, anyways I was feeling pretty down. But, now I´ve switched from my French phrasebook [View Full Entry]

So my last couple of days in France were jam packed. There is so much to see and do in and around provence and I have to prioritise where I wanted to go. My friend Nina had recommended the villages of the Luberon Valley and as they are difficult to get to via public transport I took a half day bus tour. The tour was a great idea as it helped me get out into the countryside and see the Provence I wanted to see. I had been in this area for a while but still hadnt seen countryside that moved [View Full Entry]

First we had a rendezvous in Barcelona with our wedding photographer, so south we drove stopping along the way to pick up a new battery. We were forced to seek help and get a jumpstart in the campsite that morning as our battery was truly dead when we went to start [View Full Entry]

Spain. I have been looking forward to this part of the trip the most. We woke up and headed out to a morning walk along the Roman fortress walls of the city. Great views from up there. Killer steps and a long trek, but worthwhile. We met a nice couple from England on the way when we encountered a bit of a roadblock. Seems someone had locked one of the doors in the middle of the wall about halfway across. There was a French family on the other side who were trying to make it across to our side, but [View Full Entry]

I found this castle hotel by complete accident on the internet the other day, so for kicks I emailed to see if they had any openings and sure enough they had two nights at a rate LESS than my not so fab hotel in downtown Barcelona. I booked it and off I went. My first road trip in Spain. Wyatt recommended “pepecars.com” for the best rates on rental cars. All the guide books talk about rental cars being broken into in Spain, particularly Barcelona, and how tourists are major targets. Specifically they say when you are in a rental car [View Full Entry]

Hi again. Another small trip. This time not 2 far away. About 2 hours up the coast from Barcelona. Dont remember the name of the place but it was somewhere close 2 girona (I think) Just over the weekend 1 night. With Theo, Sylvain (French guy that lives with us) and 2 of his friends. We left on saturday morning and drove 2 a water park. We spent most of the day there and then drove 2 this amazing place that was like paradise! Blue/green chrystal clear water, cliffs, sandy beach(not the annoying kind but small stones) Some more people came [View Full Entry]
