26 September 2015, Saturday It is wonderful to sleep in and we do so! We had arrived to find our bags that had been stored for the week by housekeeping had been placed in our room. Our room overlooks a park and it is startling to see how the leaves have turned and started to fall in our week's absence! After a leisurely breakfast in the hotel we start out. We are also carrying the boots that Harlan bought in Bilbao, when it did not appear his bag with boots was going to reappear. We are going to find a new home for them. We meet a young pilgrim from Portland, Oregon waiting for a street light. She says she is having a wonderful trip. We see her again a short time later and she has ... read more

September 21,22 Leaving Los Templarios to Calzadilla. Then on Mansilla de las mulas. Great to be more than half way to Santiago. The road from Los Templarios to Cmalzada de Coro was along the highway virtually non descript. I should mention Terri's Spanish saved us in Sahagun as we did seem to be drifting in the city after visiting a few Pharmacies. From there we took the rural way which initially was a road in the middle of farm land. Nothing unusual in a rural setting. The only thing in Coto was there was a man taking photos. Unusual. He was taking them of Teri and another single female. I believe Teri left here Rain coat there where we took lunch. We travelled about kilometre and there was a car on the over pass with a ... read more

16 September 2015, Wednesday. Stage 22 Mansilla de las Mulas to Leon GPS 14.21 miles in 6 hours and moving total time about 5 hours. From Albergueria del Camino to Hotel Silken Luis de Leon. Fitbit: 12.31 miles, 28,147 steps, 165 floors. The village of Mansilla de las Mulas has some great statues and other items of interest. After breakfast at the Albergueria (we were joined by many friends who could not stay there as there are only 4 rooms: Lawrence and Elaine from Vancouver, BC, Nick and Margie, and the two German men, Oscar and his uncle, the French couple as well) we walked around the walls in the morning light enjoying what we did not want to see in the rain yesterday. The bridge out of the village is also historic. The trek into ... read more

Hola , Buenos Dios - we know we are in Spain. We are greeted with two Hellos and soil that resembles mustard in parts, rust in others and all shades in between. A real kaleidoscope of colour unlike anything you seem to see anywhere else in Northern Europe. The weather sadly has deserted us. Last week the temperature was up the high 20’s and low 30’s . This week nothing but rain. It pours down overnight and continues off and on through the day. Rain before 7 gone before 11 does not ring true at the moment. It is cold too. This must be the coldest September we have ever had on a holiday. The forecast remains poor tomorrow and until Thursday when a bit of sun might burst through. Sadly it spoils sightseeing knowing that ... read more

15 September 2015, Tuesday: Stage 21 El Burgo Ranero to Mansilla de las Mulas GPS 11.65 miles walking for 3 hours 43 minutes and left at 0816 arrived at 1345 or 5 hours and 30 minutes enroute. Fitbit: 11.64 miles, steps 26,656, stairs 18 Today was all walking along a path beside a road. Cool and cloudy day with not much variation in the farm fields as we walked along. Trees have been planted along the trail and in a few years will provide the shade that I am sure is so desired by pilgrims in the summer. The first stop was a rest area but the first coffee break was more than 8 miles into the day at Reliegos where we had coffee and tortilla - the spanish potato and egg omelet. Of note was ... read more

14 September 2015, Monday. stage 20. From Sahagun to El Burgos Ranero. GPS 11.60 miles covered in 4 hours walking and 5 hours 30 minutes total time on the road. Fitbit: 11.17 miles, 25,576 steps, 40 floor/stairs Leave at 0751 after breakfast at Hostal La Codorniz of bread and coffee and orange juice. Room, pilgrim dinner last night and breakfast came to 86.5 euros total. Today is typical of last several days walking beside roads and stubble or disc farm fields of grains. We note the Singing Bridge from Roman days over the River Cea. This is the first bridge with rapidly flowing water that looks like a candidate for where the backpack went over in the movie, THE WAY. It is about 2.5 miles to the point of choosing which route to take: the Camino ... read more

13 September 2015, Sunday. stage 19. Caladilla de la Cueza to Sahagun GPS 14 + miles about 5 hours walking time and 7 hours and 10 minutes overall time to complete days walk. Fitbit: 13.55 miles, 30,955 steps, 50 floors/stairs We are now following parts of two different stages in the Brierley guide book. We had gone the partial distance yesterday from Carrion de los Condes to Caldadilla de la Cueza which is about 3/4 of stage 17. So today we complete this section and half of the next stage, 18, on to Sahagun. Our Hostel and Restaurante Camino Real was right on the camino but farther through town from the albergue. We were delighted to have two days in our hotel since neither of us is feeling 100%. Gary's cough has gotten worse, another phase in his healing. He slept in and decided to skip the morning events - postponing beakfast. Madalyn is having digestion issues but managed to go with the group on the walking tour of Leon. Our guide was named "Camino", she spoke excellent English and she was humorous as well. Three hours of walking around old town Leon, seeing the Cathedral of Santa Maria de Leon, several shopping streets and the Real Collegiate de San Isidro. The stained glass of the cathedral is in the process of being cleaned, a fifty year process before they start over again. Gorgeous Gothic windows show off beautifully on a sunny day. Going back to the room ... read more

Leon was a bit dry (weather) with an amazing Cathedral, 50 years in the making and a very nice architectural sample of the early Gothic style. The old part of town was very clean and a reminder of what Spain is truly like, every order of "canas" comes with a tapa, essentially you eat for free if you drink!... read more

There is very little English in Spain and that can lead to problems. We found that out with food. The menus are mainly in Spanish and by asking you do not always receive the right answer. That was the case in one place where we ordered green beans with ham and received fish soup. That turned us really of. They were good about it and changed it over for the right one. The roads in Spain are very good and it does not take long to go from A to B. We landed early in Santinalla del Mar and found our way through the tiny streets to our B&B We had a nice room there with shower and a very nice view over the country side. Breakfast was not so exclusive. They eat here in the ... read more
