Leon Rest Day: I should actually call this blog Bedbug Day. The major portion of my day today was taken up dealing with bedbugs. I woke up this morning and immediately started finding more bites. We let the hospitalero know and it started a frenzy. He put all my clothing in the washer at the highest temperature for 2 hours. I got lucky because after that he told people to go to big laundry mat down the street. He also put Raresh's, Alex's, Livija' s, and my backpacks in plastic bags, sprayed Permethrin, and tied them up. Before we could wash "all" our clothes, we had to go to Carrefour, a local Wal-Mart type place to buy something to wear for the 3 or 4 hours it would take to wash and air dry our ... read more

We left Reliegos around 7:30, heading for Leon for a 2-night stay. I was hoping to get some medicine at a farmacia for my cold which was still lingering. Livija was with us today and stayed with until we entered Puente Villarente where she decided to stay, hoping I think for Alex to catch up. We stopped after about 6 kilometers for breakfast at El Jardin del Camino in Mansilla de las Mulas for breakfast. I had my usual tortilla and coffee, along with a chocolate pastry. We were still sort of on the famed flat meseta, but Leon would be the end of that boredom. Although, I found out that Raresh really enjoyed it. Maybe he liked the ability to forget about everything. Anyway, after breakfast, we continued on, with a new member from Australia. ... read more

Spain is a beautiful country with many contrasts what with the busy tourist beaches along the Mediterranean coast to the huge inland mostly barren mountains in the south. There are also acres and acres of olive trees and orange trees. Pete is loving all the variety of olives whilst I have never tasted such sweet oranges! After meeting up with my old primary school friend in Barcelona we then ventured further down the coast and met up with another old high school friend who I had not seen for close on 50 years so it was an amazing catch up and a great evening. Then, last night we had a great old chin wag with a very interesting and fun Scottish couple and it was especially nice for Pete to finally have a decent conversation ... read more

Finally a day with less wind against! We made good progress, had coffee and croissants in the village of Fromista where there must be 20 chimney top storks nests. We set off across mainly flat plains passing through Carrion, Terradillos, Berrcianos, Mancilla then into Leon by 3pm; a total of 125km. We have remained within 50km of our target and still have a day in hand. It was cool and overcast for most of the day but it's 20C here in Leon, loolking forward tp exploring the city as our auberge is very central. Thoroughly enjoyed tapas in the squares, the three lions brewery pub and the food we bought at the supermarket. We are finding that because restaurants close between 4pm and 8pm... read more

Well, many kilometres really, but not a step closer to Santiago . This morning I wandered into town alone as John was having a rare sleep in and it didn't seem fair to wake him. The gardens along the rio Bernesga are very peaceful early; ahhh, the serenity! Reminds me of Bonnie Doon. After a short walk I had breakfast in a lovely cafe and was given a shot of orange juice and a sweet donut, gratis; Cafes of Australia take note! The Museo de León was having a Picasso/Dali exhibition so I paid my €1 and entered the best value exhibition I have been too. After critically examining the artwork, in a nice way, I approached the door thinking it was money well spent. The lady at the desk indicated I needed to go upstairs ... read more

Crossed the Rio Elsa at 7am this morning and set off for León. We arrived at Villarente only to find nothing open, but after a walk along the edge of a busy road, l spotted a panadería and we went and bought some mini croissants for breakfast. The baker told us about a cafe a kilometre away so the caffeine hit occurred there. Dave, our English friend, arrived for his morning cup of tea and commented that now he believed we really walked. He never normally sees us during the day as we leave earlier and walk at a good pace. At all other times he walks into a destination to see John enjoying a beer and me reading the guide. We do walk ! The rest of the walk to León was fairly mundane and ... read more

Today we had a later start, 7am, and had decided to divert off the main route and walk 4kms along a road to reach El Burgo Ranero for breakfast. It was still dark for the first hour but the track was either quiet road or good gravel paths. After yet another tortilla meal (for me), we walked an uninterrupted 13kms to Reliegos, a small village 7kms from our destination. The early morning light reflected on the hay stubble was lovely and lifted my spirits as another day commenced on the Camino. The scenery was mainly fields of harvested hay or cornfields that dotted the landscape for much of the day. The occasional ruin, no not me, broke up the monotony, as did conversations with others along the way. I was talking to a couple from New ... read more

We passed through Sahagun today, but again the village we are in is to remote to rate on this site; pop.200. Last night I had Hamburger de la Casa for dinner and , served with chips, it was a nice change from the 'pilgrims menu' and probably just as nutritious . We chatted with a Canadian woman who was a cleric with the Canadian United Churches and a young man from Oregon who was a music teacher but had just graduated as a conductor and baritone. It's amazing the diverse range of people who cross our paths each day and it helps shift you out of the small world view that we often hold; there's a lot to see out there! We started walking at about 6.40am this morning, it was pitch black but the stars ... read more

We had a four-day weekend recently, and it happened to fall over my birthday, so a friend and I headed east to the province of León. The border of the province is only about a two-hour train ride from Ourense, but the change in landscape is remarkable. We traveled through green mountains to more reddish-dirt hills, to eventually a relatively flat, drier landscape. Our first stop (about three hours along the train ride) was in a town called Astorga. I’d read that it was a cute town, and it also had one of architect Gaudi’s only constructions outside of Catalonia. Wikipedia told me there was a distinct ethnic group called Mastorgas there (but we didn't happen upon them). We easily found the Gaudi construction, the Episcopal Palace, which is right next to the massive cathedral. Astorga ... read more

September 23,24, 2015 I think I mentioned that Mansilla de las Mullas was a neat old walled town with lots of character. They had a farmers market when we arrived. Very lovely. The 23 was a walk to Leon nearing the highway to Leon. It was relatively flat and uneventful. We arrived mid afternoon. The mission for Leon was to get Terri a rain jacket to replace the lost one. It took us 5 stores but eventually found an acceptable piece. The second was to get some medical supplies and get Terri's hair back to normal. Done! Accomplished! Leon in a beautiful city. The first day on arrival was simply gettin to know the town a little. The following day we explored the beautiful Catherdral, several other churches, etc. Leon in our favorite. The city also ... read more
