I arrived in Leon very late...almost 10. I was glad the streets were labeled and got to the hotel very quickly. I did not sleep very well as the hotel was not that sound proofed. Probably at 4:00 AM some drunks were walking through the street. When I finally got going Saturday (3rd) morning, I had no real plans...just exploring. I passed some very neat cathedrals and churches. I walked and walked and just explored. Leon is growing and there are a lot more modern buildings here. Eventually....I ended up back on familiar territory. Thats the best part. You just walk and sometimes you end up right where you need to be. SO creepy guy #1 sees me walking and wants me to follow him. Weird right? Then I had gone and used the computers. I ... read more

Well made have made it to leon - an amazing city with so much going on. On the way here passed a Welsh cyclist who said he had heard of us when speaking to other British Pilgrims as apparently not many Brits are doing it...so we must be quite famous for him to recognise us! Booked into the the refuge here, and about to go out again but we have just been playing to locals at football - in bare feet, and now have bloody huge blisters on our feet (pun intended) and any advice would be greatly appreciated asap!! We did win though 5-4 so worth it... Have had a great last few days but has been very hot, intend to have our first ´rest day tomorrow´as we can lie in until 10am here...luxury!! So ... read more

Leon was a success two days ago. Camping gas replenished (after a meticulous search lasting two hours and including much head shaking from the locals) and photos copied to CD. Leon is the major city of this region. As we approached a Commando strategy was hatched (get-in, get-it, get-out) to minimise the discomfort and avoid another Burgos style shock to the system. The past two days have been highly exciting watching the Spanish play chicken on the N-120. The N-120 is a fast, 100 kilometers per hour, single lane in each direction road that runs directly from east-to-west (the Romans would be proud). It is a road we are now very familiar with as our path has often gone close or crossed it several times. The province of Leon seems to have somewhat over estimated the ... read more

I'm still walking... And my feet are doing okay - I try to wrap every toe and heel with tape to prevent more blisters. At the end of each day, I can hardly stand on them any more... but by the next morning, they´re ready to go again. It truly amazes me... thank you feet! I'm officially a "Pilgrim" of the Camino de Santiago. The life of a pilgrim isn´t bad... at least it's much better than it was 1,000 years ago. Most of us sleep in "alburgues," like hostals with dorm rooms (less than $10 per night). I get to take a shower everyday. And I sleep on a bed with a mattress and pillow (we bring our own sleeping bag). I don´t have to carry much food or water, as each village has restaurants ... read more

Hello everybody!!! So here I am in a little city called Carrion de los Condes in the province of Leon, Spain. Tomorrow will be my 14th day on the Camino, and it has been amazing so far!! Ok, so much to say! I´ll try to organize info a little bit so I don´t ramble... The walking crew... Ok, so I have to admit that I was a little bit nervous arriving alone and walking 500 miles by myself, but I met the best group of people on my very first night, and we´ve been walking together ever since. There are 5 of us...one Italian named Valentina who is hilarious and uses the word beautifu labout 100 times a day. She´s great! Then there´s Tilde from Denmark who is probably laughs more than anyone I know. Loreto ... read more

Well all I can say is thank you! thank you! From reading your comments I think all your positive SUNNY thoughts are working. Yes I have had some sunshine and it´s glorious. I shall never take those beautiful rays for granted ever again. All your comments are truly appreciated and do keep me going. You don´t know HOW MUCH! Having the extra day off in the wonderful Moanstery Hotel San Zoilo made all the difference - I felt very strong the next day and walked to the halfway point of Terradillos de los Templarios 26.8km, (400.5km) and felt great at the end of it. I´ve obviously walked into good fitness. My shins have settled (thanks Annie P - keep up up the healing work). They don´t hurt now but are very odd shapes. A bit alarming ... read more

We came in out of the rain after 20 miles of walking. Soaked head to toe in ponchos and rain pants. Socks swimming inside our boots. But Thank God, after all that open space, we had finally found a hostel. A place with a roof and a radiator. Some place not out there... Such solace in small things. Simple things like roofs. Except... ...realizing with dread that I didn't have enough cash for the room, I asked the proprietress--a sawed-off fire hydrant of a woman who looked suspiciously like Pat Buchanan--if they accepted Visa. They did not. I asked if there was an ATM in town. There was not. A stupid question, in restrospect, given that the majority of the buildings in town were built of mudbrick, with nary a right angle to be found. Chickens ... read more

Hey everyone Once again I´ve left myself 8 minutes to get a blog together, so I thought I´d give you a day in the life...and many of you may wonder why the hell anyone does this crazy camino. 5.30am - The first pilgrims (usually german but more about that later) get up. They have lots of plastic bags, but are gone by 5.45am. Its OK really because the 'quiet' time between 4-5am when the snorers (and there are lots, and a vast majority are wet snorers who I either worry will drown, or HOPE that they actually will drown) 6am - Get up, pack everything in the dark, dress various blisters, toes (yes, the dead toe was mine, and it has come alive again) and self into the same clothes had on yesterday. Realise that I ... read more
