We got a Call on Sunday to say our good friends, Yvonne and Brian, were currently in the UK and were coming over to see us on Friday. This is a lovely surprise. Their flight arrived at the local airport at about 12.30 so we were there to meet them. To get a good deal on their last minute flight, they are booked into a hotel in Los Gigantes. This is about 45 miles away from us. As they had a very early start to their day, we left them to their own devises for the rest of the day, but it was lovely to see them again. We last saw them in January 2011 when we visited them in Dallas. ... read more

Since we have got ourselves a little more organised at home, we have been trying to visit new places around the island of Tenerife. Yesterday we decided to visit El Medano. El Médano, formerly port of Granadilla, is now a tourist resort in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona in the South of the island of Tenerife. It is 11 km from the town of Granadilla de Abona, reaching a maximum altitude of 10 meters above sea level. It has the largest natural beach of Tenerife and is about 2 kilometres in length. This beach of fine white sand which is frequently windswept. The area is popular for the practice of windsurfing and kite surfing. There are many bars and friendly restaurants close to the beach and many hotels of varying sizes nearby. The price of ... read more

We went to our local Sunday market at Los Cristianos today. As normal, we did not buy much, but we both enjoy just wandering around the many stalls. From the market we wandered along to Los Cristianos port. For many weeks, we have watched the boats coming in and out, but only from a distance. We knew there was a boat coming in about 11.00 that goes out again about 12.00 midday to La Gomera. There is a small café in the head of the port, so we went there for a coffee. Got a bird’s eye view of the boat docking and leaving. Some quality sun catching and relaxation time for us. From here we walked to Surfers restaurant for lunch then back to Los Cristianos station to catch the bus home. ... read more

We left Playa de las Americas behind us and took the curvy roads to the mountains. The landscape of this island is lovely. Notable is the many different flora and fauna which we never saw before. Especially the big number of different cactuses. Some of them was nearly difficult to differentiate if they were cactuses or trees. Slowly we approach the city of Vilaflor, which is located at 1500 meters high and at the same time it is the highest settled city of Tenerife. This beautiful village has an amazing view to the south part of the island. Also the fact that it is close to 'the border of the clouds, makes this city mystic. After our break at Vilafor we continued to go up to the mountains. While driving we crossed the clouds border and ... read more

After we came down from the mountains we reached the city of Puerto de la Cruz. Coming to our next to do point on our list. Visiting Loro Parque. Loro Parque was initially a park for Parrots. During the years it became a big park of many different birds, different plants and sea animals. We spent some hours by enjoying the lovely park. Especially the shows were above expectations. The cute dolphins and funny seals were nice. The parrot show was excellent. We were quite amazed how they were able to train birds that they can count and many other tricks. We left satisfied Loro Parque and went to orient a bit the city centre of Puerto de la Cruz. We noticed that the beaches on the north were typical 'volcano beaches', which means that the ... read more

Our next travelling expedition in October is shaping up nicely now. We have just the flights and possibly island ferries remaining to book. We always make our own direct travelling arrangements. Our vacation will take us for one week to Deerfield Beech just north of Miami, Florida close to the Everglades. Then a week in Freeport in the Bahamas and then onto Charlotte Amalie Island in the Virgin Islands. We are looking at making the connections from the Bahamas to the Virgin Islands by boat as we have been unable to book a direct flight. ... read more

DAY 1 Finally time for holidays. It was Sunday night and our flight was in the early morning. Destination for this time was Tenerife, Canary Islands. Unfortunately the flight to Tenerife was not at a desirable time. Especially when you are not able to sleep in a plane. After the check in procedure at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and entering the plane, the flight took off. After approximately 4 hours of flying we approached Tenerife. Above the clouds one of the important sight seeing was visible. The El Teide Volcano. After landing and and the transfer to our hotel at Playa de las Americas we were so exhausted that we needed a nap to recover. When we woke up it was quite late in the afternoon and we started to have a walk to orient the surrounding. ... read more

We went to Torviscas market today. We had planned that today was to be a beach day, but the day was a bit overcast, so we had a walking day instead. We stopped on way for a light breakfast and then later an ice cream. We calculate that the route we walked was about 8 miles, plus up and down our local hill. The weather is about 24 degrees today but is a bit overcast and windy. There is a good artist in Tenerife who keeps making creations in the sand at Los Cristianos. Today there was an aligator in the sand. Just before we arrived at Los Cristianos station for the bus home, we walked past the shop where the recent British murder happened. It was a very eary location. Some people have left flowers, ... read more

George’s sister and her husband are going home today. Had a lazy morning then left for the Airport about 10.30am. A tearful farewell. Their flight leaves at about 12.45pm. From the apartment, we saw the flight taxi down the runway. A strange experience. The runaway of Reina Sofia Tenerife South is about three miles away from us. We are plane people and enjoy watching movements in and out of the airport. It fascinates us. Recently we have seen a jumbo from Russia, 2 military planes come in and a couple of aborted landings. The Airport does not cause us any nuisance. ... read more
