Ok, somebody pinch me! Is this actually for real? I´m living in Spain for the summer! Maybe it´ll lose its appeal by the end of the summer, but I still can´t get over it, no matter how many times I say it! I can´t believe its already been almost a week since I´ve been here. I was met at the airport. Here´s a trip for future travels, if you´re young and cute you can get through customs rather quickly if you don´t speak the language here ;) The guy just rolled his eyes at me and passed me through when I said "no hablo español". And then there was Alvaro to meet me at the airport with a sign that said "Megan". I´ve always wanted to do that...makes you feel kind of important :) So I´m ... read more

Today after “classes” I went with a group of people to the beach at Sopelana, about a 30 minute Metro ride away. It is the most beautiful beach I have ever been to! I have some pictures that attempt to do it justice. I didn’t bring any kind of a beach towel to Spain, so I was forced to use the only towel I have—the one I use after showering. It almost got destroyed by the fastest tide I’ve ever seen (literally, it came 10 feet in 5 seconds. Ok…it was a huge wave/the tide…but still) but it’s doing ok! I forgot to mention: Today I was taking a nap in the lounge on my floor when the maid came in and decided to start talking to me. She wanted to know what state I ... read more

As you all know, today is the 4th of July. You wouldn’t know it if you were in Spain, for obvious reasons. I had my second day of classes today. I’ve finally decided to take “Spanish culture and civilization” and “Spain in Europe.” Both are taught entirely in Spanish and I love it! After school those who singed up for an outing with a native student split up into groups and met our students. I have a girl who just graduated from La Universidad de Deusto who has lived in the Basque Country her whole life and, according to her, has no real desire to go anywhere in the United States besides Nebraska. When we asked her “Why Nebraska? ” she said that her friend is going there and that’s the only place she really knows. ... read more

Had my academic orientation session today. They talked about what classes we can take and the hours they are offered. I’ll have one class that goes from 5:00 - 7:30 at night on Monday (because classes aren’t offered during Siesta). We also took a tour of La Universidad de Deusto so we would know where all of our classes are. After this, we took a bus ride to Plentzia, a town to the north where we, of course, took a tour. Then to a restraint for Lunch (I’m starting to like this big lunch, small dinner thing.) After lunch, we were free to do what we wanted, so we went to the beach that is right there in Plentzia (right by the sea.) After burying some people in sand and playing a little futbol, we ... read more

Lazy Sunday, anyone? Europe » Spain » Bilbao By Jeff RJuly 1st 2007Jeff Rohalla As the title suggests, I did very little today. After waking up at 1:00, I had lunch in the dorm. A few of us decided to explore the city a bit more; there is not much else to do on Sunday, because all of the stores are closed except for bars and cafés. So, after a short while we stopped at a café where I had a bocadillo (a small sandwich) and tried some chocolate con churros (so good!) After climbing a million stairs to get to a park in the center of the old part of town, I took my first metro ride in Bilbao—much classier than in Madrid. I literally did nothing else for the rest of the day, so i... read more

After a European breakfast (aka small, but good) this morning, my fellow students and I took the short walk to La Universidad de Deusto for the first time. Here we were introduced to the CIDE program and took a placement test for language classes. We then were given an orientation session for Bilbao after which we had lunch at a hotel—Italian, finally! From there, a tour of Bilbao, including mention of the parts of the city that we should not wander into at night. We then had the rest of the day to do what we wanted. I went to the bookstore in “El Courte Ingles” and bought Harry Potter in Spanish (a difficult task, because the person who I was talking to spoke mostly Basque—very different from Spanish. Also, I could only find HP ... read more

Yay! I just finished my two finals and I think they went really well! It is such a relief to have that done and know I can officially relax (even though this has all been one giant vacation). But I need to pack up all my stuff today, before I can go out tonite. This is going to be a pain, because I need to organize my suitcases by trìps. I'm taking my overnight bag to Granada, then one suitcase to paris/Florence, and leaving one suitcase at the airport in Madrid... that is a lot of planning I need to do! Who knows when the next time I can use a computer is, but I'm sure I can find an internet cafe in Granada. There might be one in my hostal, but who knows! ¡Muchos Besos! ... read more

Not very much to report today. Got on the bus with our luggage this morning. Headed to Museo del Prado, a large contemporary art museum here in Madrid. After lunch back at the hotel we started the 5 hour journey to Bilbao where I will be staying for the rest of my trip. My ears were popping the entire time because of the fluctuations in elevation as we went through the mountains. Bilbao is strikingly different from Madrid. Bilbao is located in a valley between large mountains and is much larger than I had imagined. The pictures will help most in describing how different Bilbao looks and feels compared to Madrid. Out of the front door of my residence hall is the most beautiful view you could imagine. Tonight the city was sprawled in front ... read more

So I would like to put a disclaimer up from the last blog... I am not an alcoholic... lol Last night my friends and I had a sort of last dinner all together, since we have finals and all, we wanted to make sure to celebrate! Instead of having Spanish or Basque food, we ate at a Chinese Restaurant! Yep, Chinese food in Spain, but I guess it is the same as having Chinese food in the US too! It was actually the best Chinese food I have ever had. My friends and I all had spring rolls and then each ordered a dish and we all shared. They brought the dishes out as they were ready, so for an hour we constantly ate. It was nice though, because you weren't stuffing your face all at ... read more

Sooo it's the day after my 21st Birthday and let me tell you my head hurts! But it was totally worth it, I'm 21 now! 21 is not a big deal here, because you can drink straight out of the cradle, but all the people at the bars know it is a big deal for an American, so i got free drinks anyways! I will make a list of everything I drank, because it was amazing! at the apartment: Champagne, the cheap stuff that cost 3 euros, but hey I'm not picky yet Sex on the Beach, basically a fruity delicious mix with juice Sangria While playing Kings (a drinking game) we mixed the sex on the beach with the sangria and to our surprise it was quite deilicious Corona with lime, or as they call ... read more
