It’s been a while so be warned it’s a long one! Spain and we were looking forward to a few things. The beach, warm weather, Tapas, and catching up with Nicole's friend Tracey and Sister Belinda. So we were off again. First stop Malaga, Spain. Most travellers only really use Malaga as there gateway to Spain and the sun drenched beaches of the Costa del Sol. We found it to be quite a cool city. We stayed for 2 nights in a great little pension for 42Euro per night. With narrow old streets (most of the historical area is pedestrianised), huge plazas, beautiful gardens, some impressive sights, boutique shops and plenty of tapas bars and clubs there seems to be something for everyone. We checked out the towns Cathedral (old mosque) and walked around the Alcazaba ... read more

We tend not to sit in one place for a week at a time very often. If you are going to sit for a while though then you should do it with good people in a really nice place. San Sebastian is a very nice spot to do so and our family are good people to do it with. San Sebastian is also called Donostia. For a while, I had the impression that there were two cities very close to each other. It did dawn on me after a while that they were the same place and that Donostia is the Basque name for San Sebastian. They are doing a bit of renaming of streets here to reflect the Basque traditions. It can be confusing but it is a pretty sensible way of giving respect to ... read more

Question: Have you ever hoped on a plane knowing exactly where you’re going but having no idea where you’re staying? If you haven’t, try it one day. It’s an interesting experience… It’s one of those small things about travelling that until you’ve actually tried it you won’t really understand what I’m talking about. Imagine for a moment arriving at an airport or in a town without a map, your iphone’s not working, you can’t speak the language, its late and you’re lugging around 25kg of bags. Where do you go and what do you do? If money’s not an issue and you’re on a holiday you simply hope in a cab and say take me to a nice hotel right? What about if you’re on a normal budget and you’re on a long term trip…interesting question ... read more

Our goal for today was to drive into France via Hondarribia. We started the day with a nice breakfast in our hotel, which was pleasant and an efficient use of time. We were surprised how crowded it was, and recognized the voices of several of the older guest from the late night/early morning singing we heard from the adjacent pub...must have been some kind of reunion. The drive we plotted out would maximize the use of the coastal roads along the Bay of Biscay (Coles de Basques), trying to bypass San Sebastian, to Hondarribia and then into France. The drive was gorgeous and involved numerous stops to take in the rocky coastline. At one of the pull offs there were multiple etchings of a woman who had lost her seafaring husband...I think? There were signs for ... read more

The time is finally here. After first becoming aware of the Camino de Santiago when I lived in Granada in 2000 I'm ready to make my first step of many in a few more weeks. For the reader who may not be familiar with what the route is I will explain. It is a pilgrimage route to the tomb of St. James the Apostle which has been going on since the Middle Ages. I will be taking the French route which has its beginning in the small French Basque town of St-Jean-Pied-de-Port. I'm estimating 30 days to cover the 500 miles. Since I plan to spend time documenting my own personal experiences on the trail it may take more time. Time is not a consideration since I will be in Spain until October. These last few ... read more

First off, here's how you know I'm in Spain: one of the host daughter's boyfriend was just over and he was talking about a trip he's going to take and said he will leave at "8:30 de la tarde" meaning 8:30 in the afternoon. Even after about 4 months here, I still find it hilarious that they consider 8:30 the AFTERNOON. After we had daylight savings here, it's even worse! My host mom said a week or two ago that now it's the afternoon until 9pm. Noon-1pm on a Saturday is considered morning... just cracks me up. Also, after all this time here, I still get frustrated when I go to a store to get stamps or something at 2pm and it's closed. Pretty much everything here closes from about 1-5pm for siesta (minus the bars ... read more

J and I arrived in San Sebastian after a crazy early flight but ready to go and mosey around the historic streets of San Sebastian. J of course wanted me to try the Tapas as a priority as it is my dream style of food and I have to admit I was pretty smitten and could have kept eating it all day. Instead we went for a very energetic walk up the steep hill to the look out where the gigantic statue of Jesus looks over the city. After exploring the streets of the old quarter we felt we deserved to relax on the beach with a couple of local beers. On our second day in San Sebastian we decided to go to Biarritz, we set out on our train journey through what looked like the ... read more

Look it up! Anywho, I hiked a part of it with my host family today along the coast and it was beautiful to say the least. We came across this religious community who makes bread and sells it in a store here in San Sebastian in la Parte Vieja. They were so welcoming and we bought a few loaves of bread from them and stayed to chat a while drinking a mix of Mate tea (from South America) and orange juice, and eating raspberry muffins that they'd made. After resting a little there, we hiked back down to our car which we'd left in the pueblo at the base of the mountain. Last weekend was really fun as well. Some girls in my program and I took the funicular up to the top of a mountain ... read more
