San Sebastian
Basilica de Santa Maria del Coro J and I arrived in San Sebastian after a crazy early flight but ready to go and mosey around the historic streets of San Sebastian. J of course wanted me to try the Tapas as a priority as it is my dream style of food and I have to admit I was pretty smitten and could have kept eating it all day. Instead we went for a very energetic walk up the steep hill to the look out where the gigantic statue of Jesus looks over the city. After exploring the streets of the old quarter we felt we deserved to relax on the beach with a couple of local beers.
On our second day in San Sebastian we decided to go to Biarritz, we set out on our train journey through what looked like the ghetto of Spain. We got to our change over and J very unaware of the police presence walked straight pass where they were checking passports and ID, oblivious that this was what they were doing and that we had not even thought to bring ours. I saw them and crapped it, as we walked away I told J and he just thought they were
train guards. Unfortunately after that big scare we had just missed the last train to Biarritz for 3 hours so decided to turn around and go back on our merry way avoiding any cops at all costs. We made the most of the day and walked even more of the city.
Our third day the weather was pretty rubbish and we had to kill the day without access to the hostel as we had to check out. We managed to hide away in a bar with one coke between the two of us for several hours and spent the rest of the time again wandering the streets. We caught the overnight bus to Barcelona which got us in at 7am very tired as the bus driver was crazy and felt like we were on a fair ground ride.
After managing to check into our hostel early we showered and set about to see all that Barcelona offers in two days. We first went to the amazing market on the Ramblas. We bought very cheap fish and veggies for our lunch and dinner. The fish was so good and we ate like kings not backpackers. We first checked out
the Gaudi buildings which were pretty awesome and strange. He was certainly a very imaginative guy. We then walked half the city to get to the Segrada La Familia it is also another impressive and interesting building. We decided to pay the 12 Euro to go inside and were very dissapointed, I am not sure what we expected with a half unfinsihed building but that is what it was. A building covered in scafolding and not much to see, and a tower which they charge a further 2 euro 50 to go up. After this we decided to go to the Parc Guell, unfortunately we decided J didnt need his wallet but in it was his tube card. So being the tight arse backpackers we are we decided to walk, which considering we had spent the previous fours days walking our legs were struggling and it was all up hill. It was very lovely and again some more gorgeous buildings by Gaudi. We sat in the sun and enjoyed the view over the city. I was very tempted by the Sangria but after seeing it cost 10 euro for a litre and you can buy it from any shop for
85 cents I was certainly not going to indulge. We walked back from the Parc through lots of local streets and came across some cool shops, one of which was a cheap asian bazzar where he got a Mary and Jesus which glow various colours when switched on, very tacky but cool.
Our second day in Barcelona we decided we would have a beach afternoon so in the morning we set off to walk to Mont Juic. We started by walking down La Ramblas to the harbour. La Ramblas is a very lively part of the city and has lots of street stalls from people selling birds to flowers and street preformers. There are lots of cathederals and churches in Spain and we went into some awesome ones whilst exploring the gothic quarter of Barcelona. Each of them had amazing shrines which J and I were blown away by. We have taken thousands of pictures of them all but wont bore you all with them.
We then walked along the water front up to Mont Juic, which is a huge park area with a Palace and had the Olympic swimming pool from 1992. The Palace has massive fountains and
outdoor escalators, this was a very exciting novalty for me but unfotunately we walked up the hill to Mount Juic from the other side and had to take the escalators down the hill!!
We cheated and then took the tube to the beach as our legs were about to give up on us. The sun decided to dissapear but we did the British thing and enjoy the beach in the cold, we were very tickled when we saw a very tanned naked fellow strutting up and down the beach. The life guards really didnt seem to care and were also laughing with us. J decided to take this opportunity to skate some of the famous spots in Barcelona and I was chief photographer.
Our last night in the hostel in Barcelona we had to change from our private bunk room to a 6 bed dorm. We didnt mind but when two girls came in at 11.30 and proceded to walk in and out of the room talking and russling through their bags until 3.30 in the morning we were two tired and grumpy people. Luckily we decided to go luxery and catch the train to Valencia.
We
have been in Valencia the past couple of days but will update you on this when we have a bit more time.
