After a wonderful first week of our holidays we moved on to our second base in Parentis en Born, which is on the West Coast of France not far from Bordeaux. It was a fair drive to get from our first base to here, in fact I drove over 2400 KM’s on this holiday and loved every minute of it, I’ve driven all over Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Spain and France and always enjoy it. I very rarely drive at home, we have one car that I pay for, put petrol in, clean and maintain but Fiona drives it… to be fair she needs it for the kids and other than a wee drive at the weekends sometimes I’m very rarely behind the wheel so look forward to getting out and about on our holidays, it ... read more

Ralph here. It's a hard life travelling as a stuffed dog. Spend most my time in a huge rucksack with smelly socks and get tossed around in buses and trains and i don't even get to sample all the delicious food! And of course, whenever Vanessa sleeps, she nearly squeezes the stuffing out of me! And the snoring and drooling i have to endure is unbearable, but for free room/board and travel, i can't complain too much! Ah well.. Well, for those of you paying attention, we went from Girona baaaack to Barcelona, raced the slowly approaching darkness and scary people to the OTHER side of town to the safety of a bus station. However, the security man on duty spent the entire night chatting up the girl working at a sweets shop inside the bus ... read more

¡San Sebastián! "Weekend Warrior: A person who holds a regular job during the week which restricts his/her ability to party/go on trips/partake in awesome activities, and thus plans epic weekend adventures to compensate. As much variation and quantity of awesomeness is packed into the weekends as physically possible, warranting the rest of the work week to recharge for the next weekend. These people are notorious for staying up until sunrise and wearing the same clothes into the next day. They only qualify if he/she parties on all nights of the weekend - no days off - This requires much will power and obedience." -Urbandictionary.com Yet another whirlwind adventure! Started the weekend early and took the midnight train to San Sebastián on Thursday. It w... read more

So after a gorgeous week exploring Isle de Re, we drove to Zarautz, a gorgeous surfy town in the Basque Country, northern Spain, about 20mins from San Sebastian. It was so cool and had such an awesome vibe, we were camped on the most amazing cliff overlooking the town, was quite a mission of a walk down to the city but luckily we had the 2 cars which proved to be a godsend! We ate like kings and had a ball, although the 2nd week was harder with an 18 month old baby... we all felt it and as good a time it was, it was nice to get home in the end! The weather wasn't as amazing the 2nd week but we continued to work on our tans, and came back with awesome ones!!! Over ... read more

Monday 11th October to Sunday 17th October 2010 Monday 11th Oct 2010 Into Donostia-SanSebastian by bus along narrow cliff road. Had to come to a sudden stop only once. Into tourist office and we were given a map in English - not much information on it. Looked and asked around for a post office - gave up. Went into the Kursaal Building - very contemporary. The sides of the building are made to look like a Roman Blind - photos of it at night look good. Then around town and back to Tourist information office to get direction to post office. We had actually walked past it twice as there are no signs outside - it’s an old heritage building and the call it ‘Correos’ -meaning post office . Then to Vodafone for dongal for internet ... read more

We have decided that Tapas are overrated, it's a very easy way to eat but they all seem to be the same, mainly different spreads on baguette bread some of which are very difficult to figure out what they are. We think that because San Sebastian is so close to France this is why the baguette is so popular here. I think we were very successful riding the bikes around town yesterday, it is mainly very flat here so this made it possible. We rode them along the esplanade right around the 2 large front beaches and then took the funicular up to the top of the mountain at the end to see the beautiful views. Yeah I thought no climbing up stairs or high hills only to find an old lighthouse at the top which ... read more

I love it here in San Sebastian. The weather isn't brilliant as we have gone north again to the Bay of Biscay near the Atlantic Ocean. It's not raining though so we are lucky as apparently it rains here for more than 200 days each year. We are staying in the old part of town which is charming and full of character. There are lots and lots of bars here which have heaps of variety of tapas that sit on the bar, you just choose what you want and pay for them, very civilized. There are heaps of people in the bars who are all very friendly even if we can't understand them. Everything here is in 2 languages, Spanish and Basque so Em and I have no idea what anyone is saying and we don't ... read more

Well , This was the fourth time i ve seen them and it was like seeing them again for the first time in Berlin. Bilbao is cool for beers and Tapas and and the Guggeneim (Martin renamed it the Googleheim)! Got an upgrade at the hotel and ended up with a junior suite over looking the river , lovely ! San Seb was a lush as ever, beautiful beach !! The gig was tiny . 45,000 usually between 70,000 and 90 plus at most venues. The crowd was v crazy like Berlin esp at the start of vertigo. So glad i went, roll on Melbourne !!!... read more

A few weekends ago my roommate, her friend Margarita, and I went on a day trip to San Sebastián, a town north of Pamplona in a different province called País Vasco, or Basque Country. It's a beautiful city, and a little bit bigger than Pamplona, but we decided to just go for the day and spend the day on the beach. The trip started off a little bit rough. Margarita and my roommate, Estela, ordered the tickets and we had some communication issues with the woman working the desk, because all three of us were trying to explain in jumbled Spanish. It resulted in purchasing the tickets, but we were directed to the wrong terminal, and almost missed our bus! But we found it eventually and enjoyed a quiet ride through the mountains and some really ... read more

Hola! Welcome to my travel blog! Now that I have settled into San Sebastián and am able to relax, I am regularly going to be keeping and updating a blog for my friends and family at home to see how my travels are going. I have almost been abroad for a month now, hopefully I will be able to accurately recall my travels and adventures thus far. I'm planning on breaking up my travels so far into when and where so it will be easier for you guys to catch up. Thus far, I traveled 24 hours to get here with almost no problems. After arriving to the Madrid Airport, we toured Madrid and the region for 5 days. From Madrid we headed to San Sebastián, my home for the semester. I haven't done too much ... read more
