“Where on Earth is Fuengirola?” we hear you all ask. As you drive along the Costa del Sol towards Malaga you come to the seaside resort of Fuengirola, one of many such places along the coast. There are so many that it becomes hard to tell when one ends and the next one begins. So for the next three nights we are enjoying sea views from our sixth floor mini apartment. To get here we had a very interesting drive. We said goodbye to Seville with some very happy memories. The apartment staff were really helpful and it was great to be able to fully cater for ourselves for the first time on this trip. Having a fridge made all the difference. We could have cold milk on our cereals and cold beers at the end ... read more

It begins something like this... Friend: So how come you not going to New Zealand again this winter? Me: mmm? Dont know really, just not got the draw this year. Friend: So what you gonna do then? Me: Dont know really. See how long I can live with the greyness, then who knows... The thing is for the past 7 or more years Ive upped and gone to NZ where Ive thrived swimming in the ocean, walking the hills and being loved and welcomed by many beauriful friends. Its the best alternative to anti depressents I know - I dont do grey skies very well :) But this year, despite the grey skies, my life is bright and colourful, and so most curiously I dont feel the draw. However, about two weeks ago my little toe ... read more

Sun 2nd Jan Early bus into Lagos for a look around. Nice marina/port area but being a holiday & a Sunday most of the shops were closed. So we took the bus back and went down to the beach at Luz. Spectacular coastline, busy beach area with quite a few surfers. Note much surf but they were making the best of it. Had a nice sunny, warm lunch at a beach restaurant - most delicious sardine has I’ve ever eaten! Lovely sunny day so we decided to walk back to the site (only a mile or so). Mon 3rd Jan Left campsite and drove down to Segres, had a look around the fort. Amazing to see the fishermen fishing from the cliff tops into water 400/500 feet below them! Even saw one guy catch a fish ... read more

Day 468 (23/7/09) Costa del Sol- Fuerngirola We arrived to the tiny bus station with low expectations and curosity as to why so many brits headed here annually. Immediately we were struck with a sense of Asia, lots of people hassling about the bus, pushing past you. We made a quick phone call to the hostel for directions and it turned out we had less than a 100m walk to our room. We were equally surprised by the large, clean room and free breaky. We dumped our gear and headed towards to the promade for a bite to eat. The beaches were filled with tourists leaving for the day, lined by massive concrete apartment blocks, and the promanade itself lined with cheap shops selling lilo's and beach gear and English pubs and restaurants. The place is ... read more

Hi everyone, Rob arrives this evening. That will change the mix again. This trip has changed each time we have added or subtracted members. Now it will be Rob’s turn to stare in wonder. We changed locations yesterday. Our timeshare time is over. The last two weeks have been easy. We had a kitchen so we cooked some American type food. A person does miss what is normal to them. Now we are back on the streets fending for ourselves in restaurants. We are tired of Pizza and pasta can you believe it. Two days ago we traveled to the ROCK. That is the Rock of Gibraltar. You know it is a great big rock. I didn’t know it but it is under British rule. It is a peninsula that juts off of a southern tip ... read more

New Year´s celebration in southern Spain. Every country has its own ways of celebrating. One of the beauties of travel is to come to different sites and take part of local customs and traditions. In many countries it is customary to make a pilgrimage just before the stroke of midnight to where everybody else is making the same pilgrimage. Usually it’s a natural gathering place, such as the main square. This is also the case in Fuengirola. People gather at Placa de la Constitution. They have brought the necessities, champagne and grapes. Champagne is a rather international occurrence. The grapes are however a Spanish specialty; the idea is to put one grape for each stroke of the clock without choking, chewing, or swallowing. In other words, stuff your mouth with twelve grapes in roughly twelve seconds. ... read more
